The whole kit came in just under $400. I wouldn’t call it inexpensive by any means. It could be that this store was in California, might have something to do with the price being more than I expected.

Although, I would NOT go with the Mini now that the Micro is available. It's roughly the same size, has a much better flow rate and is only a few dollars more than the Mini. BUT ... @@michaelhursey9 I was at a local outdoor store the other day and they were selling the micro for $25. I'd definitely go with it over the Mini. The flow for the Micro is pretty close to that of the classic Sawyer Squeeze.

As a new hiker it is hard to justify spending the big bucks. Everyone has to start somewhere. The gear that gets you out there is the right gear and you upgrade from there. At least that's what I'm doing. It works for me.
@cobbler885 жыл бұрын
True. I just got into it heavier the last couple of years. There ARE a few better options if you don't have to shop at WalMart, though. You'll probably not want a sleeping bag chewing up that much pack room, for instance, and it probably weighs about 3.5 to 4 pounds. There's a good option that packs down small (and weighs 14-18 ounces, depending on the size) that will be great for temps down into the 40s (depending on how warm you sleep) for $80. But if you're just camping in the summer, just get the $20 camping quilt Walmart now has. It packs down to around the same size and I'd guess that would be fine if lows don't dip below the 50s.

Just be carefull not to waste on the cheap stuff that will last a few trips or less, or the plain useless shit they sell nowadays. Offcourse everybody does it and you’ll laugh about it later, but it’s better not to buy stuff you might need if you see it cheap but wait untill you are ready to buy the quality. A lot of things can be used for multiple purposes and not relying on a dedicated tool only increases your skill with the other tool. And that is priceless.

A suggestion for dealing with wound covering instead of gauze and tape, get a supply of women's sanitary minipads, and a couple rolls of stretch tape. The pads are sterile and easily unwrapped from their individual wrapper, they also have some light adhesive on the outside that helps to secure them to the stretch bandage and they don't stick to the wound. The stretch bandage helps to provide pressure to control bleeding. We used these to quickly treat my brother in law for transport to the ER when he cut his leg with a chainsaw, the ER staff were impressed with how effective our treatment was.
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret5 жыл бұрын
Thats good to hear that you were able to take care of your brother in law by improvised means. Sometimes that is what you are down to and you have to use what you have. Having said that, you would have been able to do that same thing with the gauze if you had it. I always recommend people purchase and store actual medical supplies to use and improvise when they have to rather than improvising on purpose. I wouldn't personally recommend purchasing and storing feminine hygiene products for wound care instead of purchasing actual medical supplies meant for wound care. Good comment, thanks for opening up this conversation.

My wife and I did some winter camping in the Long Lake region and being the ever resourceful woman that she is suggested I make a lanyard for the Sawyer and wear it around my neck inside of my coat to keep it from freezing and it worked but I recommend blowing out as much water as you can after you use it before putting it back in your coat, don't ask how I know this, lol. Good luck on your outings looking forward to seeing how this gear preformed for you.

Now that the Micro is available, you'll likely want to switch to that. It's the same size with a much better flow. For my Mini, though, I went to the hardware store and bought a few rubber caps they put over the ends of screws. I place one of those over the non-capped end of the Mini. That keeps my Mini from dripping all over everything once I'm done using it and blowing water out.

Have had that same knife that I was issued in the mid eighties. Use it quite regularly ever since, first in the army, hunting, first response. It has never failed with the exception of the stone breaking in half. Since I was using it on operations, I subdued the handle and sheath with Kiwi black leather dye. Been performing good leather care on it and it’s still like new. That particular knife was not intended to have a narrow grind as that could possibly cause a chip or break out on the edge when self extricating from an aircraft (as explained to me in S.E.R.E). They do need sharpened frequently. If I’m not mistaken, Ontario Knife was either one of the primary source contractors or was an alternate fulfillment source. On a second note. I read an earlier comment about sanitary napkins as an alternative for abdominal pads. I work in the medical supply industry and they are the same makeup. In some cases they are the exact same product just packaged and labeled differently, at least they are with the major medical supply companies I’ve worked with. Third... two Walmart’s less than 10 miles apart in relatively similar sized communitiesare worlds different. The one five minutes closer has one isle of camping, hunting, ammo (no guns) and survival items. The other has an isle for each and guns! Great stuff! Good job with the gear selection. Somethings at walmart are tough to compromise on. For serious first aid from walmart I get a box of 4 inch gauze pads and pull 20 of them out of the pack, 2 gauze rolls. A roll of cling tape, and a piece of a straw with about 15 inches of waterproof medical tape on it. All of that fits into a quart size ziplock with a pack of cellox type of clotting agent. Makes for a great little trauma kit. Keep one in all of my bags, and the glovebox of our cars.

Just so were clear, never use a pad unless you have nothing else. They are not steril, and who knows what they may leave in the wound. Tampons are also a bad idea, they leave particals behind that can, and will cause infection.

One thing I would recommend for your first aid kit is a couple of feminine napkins, they are sterile and very good for stopping bleeding and protecting small wounds
@GrayBeardedGreenBeret4 жыл бұрын
False. They don’t stop bleeding, they absorb it. I would never carry or recommend carrying an improvised means for potentially life-saving first aid when you can carry actual items meant for the purpose. Tampons and maxi pads are for feminine hygiene, nothing more.

I have bought alot of camping items at Walmart and have had them for years and they have held up very well. The only item to ever fail was a whistle but it was my fault as the plastic insert melted in a hot vehicle. Otherwise, take care of your gear and it will last. 💯👍👍😎🇺🇸

You’re experimenting has matched mine for many things. This kit is no exception. I have to put this on the back burner a bit because so much of it was inadequate. I have to film why and how I fixed or attempted to fix all the problems I had just from getting it ready for the field. Some was good but some key items were crap

Stanley 24 oz single wall is all they carried and I don't know if they have that anymore. Fresnel lenses are in the optical shop where they make glasses if they have one in your store, but they are over priced. I'm surprised you found anything over a 3x magnification on any lens. Bank line is usually around the trot line kits and stink bait. Don't remember the brand name on it, but very little tar on it.

Joshua Great video. As has been mentioned before not all Wal-Mart's are the same I have been in one in Napa, CA that is very small and one in Tucson, AZ that you could put 3 football fields and a cricket pitch inside. Obviously it is not possible to market them the same. Add to this that walmart uses two sources for non food items. A Wal-Mart warehouse and what Wal-Mart calls assembly items, outside contract providers for seasonal, specialty, and many durable items, which can take up to a month and a half to be resupplied because the items are not shipped until the minimum order required is assembled. However, the usually have abdominal pads , which are large highly absorbent gauze pads. One of the things I have used many times for compression of bleeding wounds are Maxi-pads. Looking forward to videos on how it all goes. It can get cold in the hills and mountains of California, hope your shelter and bag is adequate. I don't think the magnesium striker is good for anything but as a handle for the ferrocerium. I am not even sure it is magnesium, I suspect it is aircraft aluminum . Love the pilot survival knife and was glad when they started carrying them. The one I was issued hangs on the belt of the survival kit in the back of my younger daughter's car. Was glad to be able to pick up a couple New ones albeit made by Ontario. Did you try the kitchen section? Frequently single wall steel bottles can be found there. Last but not least, Your California fishing license ?

Being on the low end of poor as a prepper, ive had to source alot from walmart and re-purpose things from thrift shops.i am surprised that you went with that stanly cook pot set though. when i was doing research on budget cook kits the 2 walmart options that came up often were the tall stanly cook pot option and with minimal modification you can replace the plastic grab handle on the lid and because the pot handle locks the lid on and the lid has vents it can be used for baking and for charing tinder in the field the stainless steel walmart camp cup also nests on the bottom of it and as a cook kit it can house alot of stuff. the other walmart option is the "imusa" grease pot. "Imusa" being the brand name before walmart bought them out now its just the walmart brand. they are like $7 some people keep the handle on some flatten most of the handle and some remove it. it comes with a strainer lid like the older peculator coffee pots and in conjunction with a pre filter can be used to dip right in a water source and then right on the fire to disinfect. the lid can be snugged or loosened by slighty bending the lip on it and with the pour spout having a little venting it can also char tinder. Personally this is the option I have in my get home/bug out kit set up as a full cooking kit with utensils and the walmart cup nests inside it. i have a fire and fishing kit stuffed inside as well with a little room to spare so no room wasted. I am curious to see how that tarp holds up and if there are any other walmart options you suggest on the low cost good quality end of things. Honestly I dont know what kind of temps you are looking at during your trip but I will say to be careful with the plastic water bottles. dont want them melting or cracking on you. I will say Ive had some survival to deal with here in the midwest the past week. I live in a 'tiny house' in Wisconsin and it got -60's outside and as low as 25 inside. thankfully the power didnt go out and kill the heater. havent been able to do much besides huddle under blankets all week

That’s cold! I am looking at likely 20-30 for lows. This particular Walmart didn’t have either of those items that I saw.

@@GrayBeardedGreenBeret Cold definitely wasnt pleasant lol. I stayed warm by piling on blankets and laying on an electric blanket making a "hot pocket" but I know it wont help much. Outdoor cold weather tips are few and far between on youtube, especially dealing with freezing temps and down to below zero. The 30 bag with good layering, a good fire, and a well thought out shelter should be adequate to 20. but it sure wont be Hilton. lol that is an Oddity. the tall Stanly cook pots (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3ywkJKkl8mgrs0) are normally by the camping cookware same for the walmart cup (kzbin.info/www/bejne/joObaZmJZsiqgNU). the Grease pot (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmSuoJKHiqZlbtU) is actually over by kitchen stuff at the walmarts ive been to.

My sister's furnace went out when it was 14 degrees and I was staying with her before I went into a nursing home. We both had both a Coleman sleeping bag for 15 degrees and we both had Artic sleeping bags inside the Coleman's. We had no heat for a week and the sleeping bags were Lifesavers. We had only a small propane heater for heat. And it was so cold that the mouse that we could never trap slept on my cot inside my other stocking cap. He ended up becoming my secret pet.
