Outstanding room and outcome, despite the questionable furnishing choices. What a fun project and wish it was in my basement, though I might never leave it. Thanks, Brent, for sharing, it's been an insightful journey.

Nice ping pong room! You might consider stripping the paint off those steel columns. You could darken the bare metal with gun bluing and then seal with wax. Or if that seems too industrial, you could wrap them with zinc or copper sheet (or perhaps brass or bronze) and then chemically darken (patina) that surface to whatever degree is desired.

LOVE that LED cove lighting of the strapwork frieze...that really should go around the whole room!! Maybe also incorporate wall sconces that shine in both up and down directions to maximize the lighting volume??

With all the careful planning you did around the mechanicals, structure and the wonderfully moody lighting, this space doesn’t feel like it’s crammed in to a residential basement. And that’s one heck of an accomplishment! Bravo! The only thing I would try to adjust would be to better diffuse some of the lighting so there aren’t “hot spots” on some of the walls. Maybe a gel or frosted lens would help soften the general lighting. The uplighting of the strapping details looks phenomenal!

I'm glad you brought up lighting. First thought was, "it's too dark." May I recommend using more sconces? Seems like you need to throw light up, down, and laterally, not just down. The space looks fantastic! Great reuse of an historic interior. Well done as always, Brent!

Get the steel painted faux bois to match. Add some trim if you want, but I think faux bois is the answer. The old building of the Main Branch Cleveland Public Library has faux bois all over the place because the doors are steel fire doors.

Beautiful! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts once you finalize the lighting. In my experience, it's really tricky especially trying to evenly light walls using LED light strips, even with diffusers. I almost have been tempted to try painting the diffuser so that the edge closer to the wall is more opaque, but haven't risked trying it yet…

Brent, your projects are inspiring. If you were to give advice to an upcoming woodworker that would like to make a business out of it someday, what would it be? What would you focus on to make yourself stand out from the rest?
@BrentHull

My focus has been historic precedent. Mainly because the best work was done in the past. This precedent inspires me and my clients. Second, you need to slowly build up a better client base. It takes time. Good luck.

Hey Brent, I realize your teaching seems to be to refine the craft of those who are already builders, but I was wondering if you have any advice for those who would like to become builders? Any resources and recommendations? Thank you! Love your work
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 8 ай бұрын
Well, i suppose there are 3 paths. 1, just start building. Most builders today are self-taught. 2. work for a builder. Learn as much as you can under someone else. 3. Go to a school. NBSS or construction mang school. Good luck.

Difficult to make a space with no windows to one that resembles the interior of a Public House. I'm considering the same thing but with a chair-rail about 4 foot high with shelf for pints and English Wallpaper above that. English Settle type benches, crown-moldings with deep shelf for our pewter and porcelain collections lining the wall/ceiling interface.
