I've never disassembled an engine before, and having the extra 2.0 in the garage I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to learn! I spent a couple days removing camshafts, pistons, crankshaft and the other bits from the 2.0 Duratec MZR engine. It was super fun and I hope you guys find it as interesting as I did! Stay tuned to the end for a giveaway announcement!

Hey man you doing great! 👍🏻 I hope you make a video to address the issue with the Engine cover gasket that get a lot of heat from the exhaust and they lake oil every couple months it’s a pain specially the bolts under the Cowell i don’t have a proper way to take them out 😫

isnt on the side at the bottom a bolt you can remove and stick a special longer bolt in, to lock the crankshaft?
@Horatio4711
@Horatio4711 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can, but only for timing the engine, not for unbolting the pulley. Just hold the pulley with the appropriate tool.

Oof, the way you took it apart was brutal but seeing you were not going to be putting it back together, it doesn't matter all that much. If you were going to rebuild one, there is a lot more that goes into it like keeping track of where the parts came from, all the valves need to go back where they came from, all the valve covers ( buckets/shims) are specific thicknesses and need to go back in the same place as well as all the bearing caps. It is cool to take one apart and see how it all works together but even cooler building one from where you left off and having it run when done and it sounded like you might have that in mind with a 2.3L or maybe just a swap which I think I already saw a video of you doing a swap awhile ago. I know this is 3 years old but am in the middle of a 2.0L mostly forged build for my 06 and looking for any tricks people have to pass on and came across this one. Very few 2.0l engine videos available. Keep making your videos and keep learning. Preston told me to say hi from GA.

Hello sir, I'm very curious as to why there is little to no aftermarket turbo parts for this engine? Other cars with N/A 2.0L engines have the ability to do 300-400whp on stock internals but this engine seems underpowered. My 2007 Mazda3 has a 2.0L VVT but I see absolutely no mods for it. Why exactly is this?

There is a special tool for Crankshaft dissassambly, but funny way you did this. Just don't do that way, if you want to reuse the engine, or you'll mess it all up.

There is a special tool, but this method works.

Thanks for the video. Can you show the pistons in detail please? Are there oil relief holes? It is said that the 2006 2.0 Miata didn't have these holes and this is one reason that contributes to the notorious oil consumption problem that occurs in some cases. I don't know if it has been fixed with the face lift in 2008. The 2006 should have a pressed piston pin while the 2008 version can be disassembled because it has a free floating pin. The 2008 LF engine also has a forged crank shaft while the earlier version was cast iron. Also is there a reinforcement ring inside the piston?

you saved me with the video. I didn't know which way the rod caps went. I had them backwards initially and my plastigauge readings were terrible! The pointy end goes forward!

I couldn't understand in the video, is the block aluminum or cast? It looks like cast iron, the block I have is shiny aluminum, looks different, could be dirt too.

Hi bud that motor blow it’s head gasket on 1 and 4 you can see it looking at the block and then the gasket and it you look at the bottom of the head and also the cam caps you took off you never take them off and mix up it’s bit now. You place them in order and way you take off remove cam and then put caps back on so you don’t forget witch is witch

Me personally think the motor is in decent condition. When it comes to overheated motors the main thing to look for is the crank and rod bearings to see if the oil and coolant mixed to the point where it wasn’t enough to line the bearings/journals. But from what I see I don’t see any bad marring or gouges so I think it’s a great contender for a rebuild to learn from! It’s really simple to read/follow a repair manual when putting it together. Have fun!
@ColoredinLight
@ColoredinLight 4 жыл бұрын
One thing I didnt show was the piece of piston that was broken off near the piston rings, the pistons weren't in great shape and the previous owner said the engine was overheating. Definitely not getting a rebuild.

Taking it apart is the easy part. You need to read a GOOD repair manual before you even think about putting one back together. You have a ton of clearances that must be spot on for it to last.
@ColoredinLight

if you planned on reusing the lash caps for any reason , you cant really mix them up, with not really adjustable hydraulic lifter setups, its best to match the worn cam lobes to their lifters and lash caps to ensure it still runs smoothly.
