As a German, I always find it fascinating how Americans go about designing bus routes. In my city of Munich alone, with its 1.5 million people, we have 79 day bus routes and 18 night bus routes serving a total of 1074 bus stops with a fleet of 569 busses. Add to that 174 tram stations, 13 tram lines and 132 trams and I think it's way beyond anything in the US... not saying that the US system is worse or the German system is better - just noticing the whopping differences.

Don’t worry as a Canadian I’ll be the first to say here in Canada and I know America as-well that our public transit is a horrible joke with near no funding. Either it be trains, buses or ferry’s we are significantly lacking in everything, I do understand the size difference in land and limitations such as mountains but it shouldn’t be an excuse for the country let alone a single province/state it’s disgraceful.

It would be cool if you could do a hybrid system of both fuel, for longer/Innercity routes, and electric, for more condensed urban routes. Sort of a 'reinvest in what's more profitable' type situation. At the very least I think it should be debated by the local government. Maybe have some staunch opposition about the cost of the investing in upgrading the fleet, and try to pacify them by requesting and receiving aid from the state for the upgrade as a green initiative.

I really like the approach! That's one of the big benefits of electric buses - less noise, which is great for urban routes and one of the ways I've seen them sold - "these will whisper past your sidewalk cafe, as opposed to the loud, rattling, smoking, diesel bus." Coming in the next one! Great suggestion!

A month in the game is basically a simulation of one day and night cycle, so basically you have to check your routes for max capacity around the typical rush hour times like 6 to 9 am and 4 to 7 pm. What would be really helpful for this would be a Google Maps style graph of the usage throughout a in-game month/day so you do not have to check the line manually all the time.

Bus route demand, just like traffic density, depends on the time of day. So at peak times (morning/afternoon/evening rush) more people will be riding the buses. But late night, early AM and mid day ridership will be much less. Easy to kinda forget that when we all have day/night cycle turned off lol

The city of Ottawa, Ontario (which has a similar climate to Superior) has recently begun the process of replacing its bus fleet with electric buses after a pilot project found that electric buses met all requirements, even in winter months. The city has committed to purchasing no more diesel buses, and the entire fleet will be electric by 2036. If a city with a climate like Ottawa can do it, I think they're a good option for Magnolia County.

75% utilization would be unthinkable here in The Netherlands. I'm used to bus routes having perhaps on average 1/3rd of the seating capacity filled. I don't know how seating+standing capacity is determined so that's why I'm going by seating capacity, meaning in rush hour there would be >100% lol

That's because he applied a purely economic model, adjusting the offer to the demand to "maximize efficiency". In Europe, the practice is the opposite, planners will first set an ideal schedule based on waiting times, consider how many vehicles would be needed to reach it and then get as close as possible to the ideal with the resources available. The objective is more social than economic (with the service often subsidized). Of course, that is much more expensive and less efficient, but the externalities are usually worth it.

You really need to be careful about the exact time you're looking at bus ridership. It varies throughout the day. So when you initially adjust a bus route at 8 AM it might need 10 busses, but when you go in to readjust at 2 PM or 3 AM its only going to need 6. Obviously those 10 buses are sorely needed on the line even though they don't see full ridership throughout the day. I also think you should disable nighttime service, because it's not that realistic. Especially in the American midwest I wouldn't expect nighttime busses (also the ridership is low at night anyways).

For all who want to know how to easily make small Bus Stops. Sandwich the bus stop between two alleys and then either change the road addons (grass, trees or else) under the bus stop or the two left and right of the bus stop to something different than the bus stop. Because when the road has the same addon, the game randomly removes nodes and combines the road into single roads. When the road has different addons the game won't remove the nodes. But if you accidentally change the addon into the same or remove it it will combine the nodes.

I would suggest adding electric buses for those routes that go through residential areas (especially single family housing). I'm guessing Chuckles could pay for taxi stands to be added, but I'm guessing he'd some spatial analysis to show the hotspots of where his taxis are picking up the most. I'm guessing he'd also add standalone taxi stands in other areas of the city.

You're certainly not kidding about bus drivers not liking roundabouts. When I was in Sydney last month (specifically Parramatta, but that's just detail), the bus my team and I took to the main square always went barging straight through the roundabouts. From what I have observed in other urban planning and design KZbin channels, they do provide _flat_ roundabouts so that trucks and buses can go over them like in a small intersection. doesn't Chuckles have a zoo to run? it's time for him to pack it in and go home. also, any thoughts on keeping busses flowing through the bus stations? I always wind up with the entrance and exit getting clogged with pedestrians using the stations, preventing the busses from getting in and out, creating a huge backup of busses, killing traffic nearby. edit to add: what is the rationale for using only the cheaper stops instead of the nicer bus stands that buff comfort? I thought the comfort score makes a mode of transit more appealing...
@CityPlannerPlays
@CityPlannerPlays 4 ай бұрын
So far as I can tell, there isn't a great way to prevent that at the current time. I really hope there are more pedestrian access points added to assets in the future (like the old parks in CS1), where we can draw peds to different locations. That said, the university station works mostly because the pedestrian road draws people towards in, and since it is closest to the exit, I think the cims are crossing there (or that's my hypothesis anyway). Regarding the shelters - I mostly forgot to add them as the end, like I had intended to. I hate adding them up front and dislike the way the mechanic works generally. Too much inside baseball here, but I literally wrote the manual for when to put certain bus stop amenities at bus stops in my area. Shelters, trash cans, benches - you always add them after, because they are very expensive to install and maintain. They literally mean someone has to go out there everyday to make sure they are in good repair and clean. So you usually only place them where there is high utilization, not the other way around. So in this case, I can answer whether the chicken or the egg came first, and CS2 has it wrong. I'll update the shelters in the next one and have this discussion. Thanks for the reminder!

Phil, at 16:10 you can see buses piling up blocking traffic. In some cases, the bus bay is entered on the bus stop but in many cases, especially where one stop serves several routes, the bus stop is actually at the front edge of the bay so that multiple vehicles can queue at the stop without impairing traffic. Also, the Bailey bus route absolutely should have an intermediate stop by the chemical plant. It goes right past it. Even if it's just a small thing on the edge of the highway with a pedestrian crossing to get to the plant. A necessary commuting service for both Bailey residents and anyone commuting from Bend.

Actually in my area we have bus stops 2-3 blocks even infront of houses if they are on arterial roads. It’s super helpful for mobility, I can pin point where I get on off

Something like the big initiative to revamp transport in the county seems like a "now or never" for making the bus fleet electric. Id say YES to electric busses!

From a logistics perspective, I think synergizing the taxis with the buses makes some sense. It might even increase bus utilization if it means folks who want to use the bus are a little outside their comfortable walking distance, they can take a cab to the nearest bus hub or stop, as taking a taxi to the nearest stop and taking the busses the rest of the way may be cheaper than taking a taxi the whole way. From a narrative standpoint, it may placate Chuckles if the close connection carries implications that it might increase his business if he forms a symbiotic relationship with the bus service.

hey Phil, had thought about a good story reasoning for you to switch to the electric buses and to incorporate taxi stands into the system. the newly elected governor would want to keep some of the promises that helped put her in power to placate the citizens to act as a bit of political theatre. the "Look, I did this thing for you. Remember that for the future." mindset. the electric buses are a clean mode of public transit, and would be a popular starting point, with the potential for future policies to restrict or heavily tax excessive use of private vehicles. that would ensure more and more transit would be needed. this should also give governor timmons an easy way to buy off chuckles. offering him a decrease in taxes to his cabs, with the stipulation being he will need to upgrade his growing fleet to electric vehicles. this further shows the governor is wanting to push for cleaner energy and greener cities, while at the same time providing jobs, improving the infrastructure, and improving neighborhoods across the area. governor timmons could easily say she would like to upgrade and improve this plan over ten years or so, in phases, so the populace can adjust easier. this also helps chuckles potentially buy his way in to a seat with the board of transit for the area, as he would become a large player partner with the bus lines. opening his venture out for prospects of expansion like the bus system.

This was a really nice video! I just wanted to say that I always love the "Editor Phil here"s, even if they address something I personally didn't notice, it's always cool to know that even though there's an issue of some kind you know about it and it's known about. I also really liked the bus tour! Transit-camera tours of CS cities are the best.

Maybe you could make most routes operational in daytime only, and add a few slower more winding night bus routes. In my hometown the night busses are less frequent and attempt to drive through most residental areas instead of optimizing for speed and capacity. This series is so good!!! 😊

Niceeee, great to see the improvement on the city, but i think, that traffic it's an issue that needs to be solved, also i would like to see something made in Paradise Bay, a landmark (apart from the beach and the train station of course) maybe a pier or something? I don't know, i just think the city is ready to grow even more, love your content Phil!

It would be interesting to see if a bus depot + integrated cab station at the edge of the map where the outside connection is, would prevent the cabs from entering the city. Would the cab drop passengers off at the bus depot, and then turn around and leave?

Love the episode, Phil! I do have to say, as someone with mild colorblindness, I would hate having to navigate the bus lines in Bend with 3 of them appearing as very similar shades of blue/purple. Swapping the Purple line with yellow/gold line would really help differentiate them and also help differentiate the yellow from the light green line.

39:43 In the game you can hover your cursor over the white circle that visualises the stop in the lines schematic and it will show you how many passangers are waiting there for the line you have selected. Comparing this number to the number of people waiting at the stop in total will give you the answer your looking for.

I think an integrated electric and gas/diesel bus system makes the most sense, a forward facing but realistically not wealthy area wouldn’t be able to afford an all electric bus system but maybe would try to put in place the systems to make it possible in the future. Another thing you could do to make it a bit more realistic would be to name name the bus routes like they do in real life. Where I live (in east europe) an number and then the extreme ends of the line and an major intermediate stop. For example, in MC, line 3: Uptown BS to Bend Train Stain via Downtown Bend. Seems like an effective way to provide all the relevant info to commuters

Great work, reasonable and well explained. I guess i'll rework my transportation using the same approach. One minor improvement Idea that came to my mind: I guess having pedestrian bridges instead of pedestrian crossings around the two busy stations might improve the traffic flow around these a bit more, for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The calculation for the number of buses only works when there are more buses then currently needed. If you have less buses on the line, people will cue up more and more, and when you then add them up, you get an overestimate of the number of people using the line at a given time under normal circumstances (i.e. when there are sufficient buses to cope with the number of passengers). At least if passengers work in the way they worked in CS1, that is, they go to the bus station and wait forever, rather than giving up and going home (like people do in real life).
