“Limit your scope of work.” That is excellent advice for both pro and novice. Establishing the upper limits for safety also makes for practical and common sense. Home RenoVision shows true wisdom born from not closing the blade and years of thinking about what’s actually going on. Years from now JT can bask in the satisfaction of saving us lots of money and time in places throughout the world. A fine legacy. (And snow in Ottawa!)

I have the green bag, and am about to rip everything out! Watching your videos to get the courage. Just replaced the entire whole house drain system (57 year old house) with ABS, and now onto replacing everything in the bathroom, taking it down to the sub floor, and replacing a few sub floor boards. Oh, and with the two new rain barrels on the way, I need to install a PVC line through the outside wall, and over to the toilet (flushing with rain water). PEX might be a better choice considering they are smaller, and possibly of higher quality? Not at that stage yet, but will be within the week.

When all else fails, I use heat on to loosen the drain. I also, when possible, at about 4" to 6" I cut a 45-degree piece out of the lower corner opposite the plumbing wall. Then I can lift the tub up and out (by myself).

Hey Jeff - doing this on my second floor main bathroom. Got contractor quotes to move my toilet and curbless shower (watched your schluter video and your shower membrane video) awesome btw! - the contractor said: "We will not build a curb less shower, you can't get enough slope to drain the water freely without overflow in the area outside the shower. A house needs to be framed during construction prepared properly with a dropped area below the rest of the floor to create a slope. Also, you are planning to move the toilet, most toilets are situated in the corner because they connect immediately to the main stack, a toilet drain is a large drain pipe that cant be drilled through floor joists without compromising the structural strength of the joists. The only way it can be done is if a structural engineer designs re-enforcement made from steel. not sure what we can do for you based on your wish list." For the shower slop, i'd take the subfloor off, add a wedge the joists put the new subfloor down to the vertical drain - done. For the toilet - I had all other GC/Trades folks (licenced plumbers) say they can do it. Now i'm skeptical!? Thoughts.

It's always best to start fresh and demolish the pan. Tiled shower pans usually break very easily because they are made of sandmix molder rather than cement. Once you have the pan demoed, you have the opportunity to check the drain to see if there is anything wrong

Great stuff as usual Jeff! After this bathroom can you do another bathroom remodel where you replace a molded shower/tub with a custom tile shower only? I know there is some work you have to do on the shower floor to slope it down to the drain?

Hi Glen, for now we have a schedule laid out for the next 6 months and unfortunately there will not be a custom shower in the series, the shower I am doing has a pre sloped pan. hopefully soon. Cheers!

Have you ever addressed why you use that style of utility knife? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Side note: I’m only on minute 13 of this vid so if you mention it here..

I really like the versatility of having a knife that is also strong enough to be a chisel and large enough to be a screwdriver / can opener. Cheers!

How much money would I save doing “just” the demo of this bathroom you’ve done? Is it worth it, to do “just” the demo yourself? Thank you!

Need to replace my shower drain, spout, control, and shower head with neck, any pointers? Just changing to match the rest of the brushed bronze fixtures.

watch my videos on install in shower fixtures. And make sure you but the tub drain with the same thread size. there is more than one option and you don't want to cross thread it or you are opening up the ceiling to replace it. Cheers!

If for instance I wanted to epoxy (paint) my tub, could I unscrew the drain top for a better trim line? Would I have issues screwing it back in after? Thanks for your help!

quite possibly! I would just hire a contractor who specializes in that work. a couple hundred bucks and it is perfect.

Hello, ive watched a ton of your videos. Love your content thank. I have a question and need some help. I cant find a good video or instruction book on how to fix/repair bathroom tub wall studs. Possible water damage. Only 1 story house on slab. Guest bathroom. Really basic. If you have a book or video please let me know

Saw-saw to Silicon would be nice because you could hit the mesh and drywall. ( for a mold job). Just Total Loss for insurance purpose.

One more question for you. I know we talked about raising the floor height of my cement area with ditra xl and then ditra regular the whole area for the purpose of tile-ing We have decided to go with vinyl flooring like lifeproof. Wanted to see your thoughts on my situation. Which is trying to have floors one height. The total area is like 970 sq ft. 300 sq ft is 3/4” plywood subfloor on joists. The plywood is exactly 3/4” taller than the remaining area which is cement subfloor/foundation. Do i still use ditra on cement to match floor height... or should i do cement board? Or is there something else i should do. Thank you for your advice.

vinyl on ditra works awesome, and you can add electric heat cables to the ditra and have an in floor heating system as well. Cheers!
