We had a set of Whitely scissors when I was a kid. I don't know what happened to them. But I remember them being decidedly robust.

When I started College in 1970, we were required to buy Drafting instruments, and one of the sets I bought was like the one showed. I discovered you could buy small swivel blades that went in instead of the pencell. They were intended for use in graphic arts for stencil cutting, but worked great on gaskets.

that drawing set you got for 3 pounds you got a steal on that/the outfit that make your scissors from what I hear is one of the best scissors makers

Very nice Keith ! For mine I used Oakenstrong gasket material. I first fitted a rectangle on both LP and IP cylinders, held in place by several of the 7BA covers studs. Then simply cut with a sharp model cutter inside. Finally removed the excess gasket around covers like you. So the LP and IP gaskets are a single piece. The center rounds removed from LP cylinder was then used to make the HP gaskets 😉

On the dSLR you have the aperture too wide (f-number is low). To increase depth of field you need to decrease the aperture size (larger number). The trade-off is the shutter speed will be lower as less light is getting in to the camera.

I wondered if the gasket material was marked on one side, in the last video and hey presto in this one we can see it is Klingersil. We use this manufacturer in my job for practically all flanged fittings. I seem to recall they have a factory or headquarters in Bradford. I like the way you finish the inside with your Proxon tool. Thanks for the videos

Set your DSLR to aperture priority. Close down the aperture to F11 or higher. Presto. Almost infinite depth of field. Hope this helps.

Great video sir very nice drawing compass set l was a very lucky young lad my Parents got me a set like that but a little larger for Christmas this l used at school when I did TD and at the age of 58 l still have it just like the scissors ✂️ you can’t get better than Sheffield steel just like the chisels they were made to last can’t wait to see your next video stay safe sir 👍👏👏

Try a F-stop of 8 or 9. That will help with your depth of field issues. Great videos

What gasket material do you use to seal against steam?

Just commercial Gasket material, it seems to work well.

With DSLR's and depth of field the more you are able to close the iris the more DOF you will get so you might need some more light or raise the ISO and use a low as possible shutter speed. In other words try not to use the lens with a wide open Iris. I hope you found this useful.

Others have commented on the relationship of depth of field to aperture size, but I also think your images could be improved by changing the white balance. Apologies if you already know this, but Your camera was probably set to “auto” by default and like all average settings it becomes less successful as margins are approached. Your manual will show how to change the white balance to suit the type of lighting you are using in your workshop -just remember to change it again if you’re photographing trains outside in sunshine

Thank you for your advice. I find this job hard enough without having to check all the camera stuff while I am making the models. I just switch between auto & manual when it is required. A lot of the time I watch whet I am doing through the viewfinder and I am alway careful to not remove any fingers in the process }:-)))

Good technique! Who cares about white balance anyway, so long as you can still pick your nose 😁

Well now. It is a good thing your gasket material is green,for I am absolutely green with envy over your draughtsman instrument set. That line drawing pen,the bottom right item,is the clue. That set could be oh,130 years old,maybe more. I have some magazines from the 1905 to 1925 era,and any professional draughtsman would carry that set,there is also an extended set that was recommended. The permanent black ink of the period had some finely ground solids so a pen like that was the only way the fluid would reliably transfer. From watchmaking gears to the RMS Titanic,every single engineering drawing made ,every single straight line on that page was made with a pen just like that. And at the end of the day,the pen would be disassembled and meticulously cleaned. As a personal favor,would you film the use of that pen on a ruler,plus disassembly and cleanup ? I wonder what the threadform was specified for what made up those things,back in the day ? Any idea ? Cheers.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is this called a triple expansion engine? I see a high pressure cylinder and a low pressure cylinder, but the steam only expands twice right? Once after the high pressure cylinder, and once more after the low pressure one.
@keithappleton2 жыл бұрын
I see 3 cylinders on my Triple Expansion Engines . . . . . the 3 Cylinder covers are a dead giveaway . . . . . .
@Kevin-go2dw2 жыл бұрын
The steam expands in each cylinder, losing pressure but gaining volume. That is why the the intermediate cylinder has a bigger diameter than the high pressure cylinder and the low pressure cylinder is larger than the intermediate pressure cylinder. All cylinders have the same stroke as they are connected to a common crankshaft.
@TrentFalkenrath2 жыл бұрын
@@keithappleton Oh, my mistake there. I thought one of the smaller cylinders was a valve for the low pressure cylinder. But, I did see the slide valve at the end too, thinking why it would two kinds of valves. I guess I'm just dumb, but that's why I ask questions.

Your last comment in the video on focus of your DSLR make me wonder if you are aware of the relationship between depth of field, focal length of the lens and chosen aperture. But with your kind of knowledge, experience and girl friends I can hardly imagine you are not so I dare not make a remark about that subject, let alone give some unwanted advise 🥶

My High School Drafting Instructor, said to refer to the one you Draft with as a Pair of Compasses, and the other as a Magnetic Directional Compass. Compasses can also be used for measuring distances on maps. Those compasses are called dividing compasses, and they have two needles instead of one. The measurement can be done by measuring how many times the fixed compass can fit in some distance.
