I was lucky enough to travel from Cincinnati to Barcelona in 1991 to see the works of my then and forever favorite architect - Antoni Gaudi. And I look forward to returning to see this the most phenomenal building ever constructed finished around 2026/28.

Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Família is clearly one of the six greatest & most beautiful Cathedrals or Basilicas of the world and likely one of the last to be built. In the Dark, Middle Ages, Renaissance and golden eras of 192o’s, these took 1oo-2oo years to ‘finish’. Gaudi’s magnum opus, Sagrada Família, was started during 1882 and will likely have taken nearly 15o years to ‘finish’ when it too is complete - expected Jun’26. Some dark-ages & renaissance builders said that a Cathedral is as God Himself - never finished, never satisfied. They often noted that replacements, renovations & repairs started before original structure was completed - and Gaudi’s Sagrada Família will be just the same. Classical in every respect of the art.

‘Catenary’? His curved lines? Gaudi’s style, his mark was that eschewed straight, rigid lines which were generally not found in nature. “In physics and geometry, a catenary is the curve that an idealized hanging chain or cable assumes under its own weight when supported only at its ends. The catenary curve has a U-like shape, superficially similar in appearance to a parabolic arch, but it is not a parabola.”

Gaudí designed his buildings in stone so they could last centuries or millenia. However, they pouring concrete in La Sagrada Familia. Unfortunately, the durability of concrete is 100 years...

Just one of his many materials used - stone, concrete, pottery, shards - he used concretions with shards in cosmetic, non-structural save to hold the pottery to his structures (other projects he did)

Is explained in the video. Reinforced concrete had to be used to comply with seismic requirements. Stone alone was not enough and at the time there was not other way to do it. Is only used where strictly necessary. This pre-tensioned stone method is way better, so you can be pleased to hear it will not be used anymore. BTW, Good reinforced concrete can last forever.... So no need to worry about it, they are not on a budget and use the best available.

Not even one minute through and he already made the big mistake of calling it cathedral. Its actually a basilica. This misconception is so simple that it makes me skeptical for the rest of the talk🤨
