The Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia has been in construction for more than 140 years. Today we explore this structure just as architect Antoni Gaudí conceived it before his death in 1926.

Once on holiday I visited the Sagrada Familia and the Casa Milo, although La Sagrada Familia is by far my most favourite piece of architecture on earth, Casa Milo was also a great visit with its interesting roof design made out of bricks. I would love a video of yours concerning this other creation of Antoni Gaudi. If you haven´t been there already, go see it, I can recommend it very much :)

It’s crazy to think They started building the Sagrada Familia in the late 1800’s. Gaudi was way ahead of his time, this building looks like it could’ve started construction in 2100. It’s amazing what faith can compel humanity to create.

@@barrygreene007 I recently visited as well in September it is hands down the most well designed city I've ever been too. How connected everything is to all citizens is incredible, and how beautiful the architecture is on top of that is astounding. I've been to Barcelona twice and taken a tour of La Sagrada Familia each time. I am not the least bit religious, but Gaudi's vision is impressive and inspiring. This church is definitely a must see.... I tis somewhat a shame that the exterior of this exceptional structure has been encroached upon by the surrounding buildings of the city. It should sit by itself so that people can get the best view of the structure.
@hylje
@hylje Жыл бұрын
The church is in the middle of a city on purpose. It is part of the community. The community lives in the buildings around it. It was meant to be even more central to Barcelona, but the city came to it instead.
@tommonk7651
@tommonk7651 Жыл бұрын
@@hylje When the church was begun, it was surrounded by open ground. The city had not pushed up to the church borders. Barcelona is much larger now than it was in the 1880s. A gorgeous structure like this should not be swallowed up by other buildings.

@terryhoath1983
@terryhoath1983 Жыл бұрын
@@ThinkAboutVic You appear to have problems with spelling and sentence structure, but, as far as I can tell, you are asking a question based upon a false premise. Of course, it will be used. I am not Roman Catholic, and I know that Spain is a divided society with a large proportion of the population militantly aetheist and/or militantly anti-Catholic. That said, there are millions of Catholics in Spain and hundreds of millions across the World. Many of the faithful will visit La Sagrada Familia, not as tourists but by way of pilgrimage. Many services are held there, even today whilst construction continues. The number of services will increase as construction nears its' end. It WILL, therefore, be USED by large numbers of the faithful and will be SEEN by many more. Read the comments by those, many of them tourists ticking down the "things to do" list, who say that they were, many of them unexpectedly, I am sure, INSPIRED. Huge numbers of tourists are and will continue to flock there making La Sagrada Familia a nice little earner for the Roman Catholic Church. A little piece of advice. People will have more respect for your arguements if you express yourself without the Beavis and Butt-Head vulgarity.

It's really sad that many of the people specially young which were born and raised in Barcelona, did not visit this wonder even living beside it. I decided to do it some years ago, and is probably one of the most incredible places I did ever see in my life, every single detail was thought by the genious Gaudí and it seems a building from another planet. Mayor should do something to improve local visits.

Great video! Some extra reading: it's true that Gaudi knew he would not see the building completed in his lifetime, which is why he left lots of drawings and models for reference. But on July 18 1936 during the Spanish civil war, a gang of radicals broke in and destroyed virtually all of Gaudi's work, along with a failed attempt to bomb the Nativity facade. The continuation of it's construction was debated following the end of the war, ultimately deciding to proceed. Much of the building was designed by students of Gaudi and what knowledge was left in the rubble, with the Passion facade being completed in the 1970s. Architect Mark Burry studied Gaudi in Barcelona and designed the interior in the 90s using aeronautcal engineering software Podcast 99% Invisible have a great episode all about Gaudi's life and the Sagrada Familia, definetely worth a listen :)

I toured the church and was in a different kind of awe then but felt it was more a distraction; more of a museum than a house of God.
