This is something that could have been a displacement map. That being said, that's not what the tutorial's really about. The tutorial is really about making topology suitable for sub-div. This will become essential for more advanced stuff. Following the same principles will give a good result

At 4:00 instead of doing all those shenanigans with the pivot point and origin, you can just select the mesh, hit G then B and you can then chose a vertex on the mesh that will snap to any vertex or edge that you hover your mouse over. It works both with separate and joined meshes. Very neat little trick I discovered only recently after 15 years of using Blender but now I use it all the time !

just a tip for recording.. people that works with blender a lot, we know all the shortcuts, but some people doesn't know, u could activate the thing that shows the keys u r pressing, so people who doesn't use blender or beginners would know how to select things faster..

That's way more polygons than you need for an oreo unless it's going to fill your entire screen. I did something like this when I was making a game for a homework assignment and... well, thankfully my computer still functions.

Love the tutorial! but I was just speculating. Couldn't you just use a displace modifier and work on the photo itself my making a black and white displacement mask ? It wouldn't be that clean but much much faster
