The album "Hindsight" (2008) is the group re-doing some of their earlier songs, making them less "doom-metal" and closer to "prog rock". It was actually released *after* "A Fine Day to Exit" (2001). The original version was off "Alternative 4" (1998), and even then they were starting to expand their music from the early doom metal. For doom metal, you'd really want something from "Serenades" (1993) or "The Silent Enigma" (1995). The verison on Hindsight is 5:30, and they have a live version which is 7:32 long on "A Sort of Homecoming" (2015 concert album). The song is easy to stretch into a longer version without feeling too long. And it isn't coincidence that "Alternative 4" is about when I started to take notice of Anathema. IMO their albums get better and better up to "Weather Systems".

Distant Satellites feels like they were trying things out and The Optimist is the fleshed out ideas from DS mixed with their love for Radiohead

... I really should have added that I simply haven't had the time to listen to their most recent studio album, "The Optimist". So I do not mean to suggest that it's a step down from "Weather Systems".

Similar to Katatonia, only Anathema's first two albums were related to doom metal, and after that they moved to a more goth rock style, and their later stuff (which this very much is) is more goth/prog/alternative (even a bit of pop) mix. Very beautiful stuff. Probably my favorite from them is Weather Systems, and from it I love Untouchable Pt. 1 and 2. I'm sure others have mentioned it, but their last album, The Optimist, is the sequel to A Fine Day to Exit. The Lost Song trilogy would be fantastic to do as well.

Anathema was death/doom in their early days, like "Serenades" and "Crestfallen" ep, but never just doom. And then changed their style into poppy prog rock. Even this song was re-recorded, sounding less "doomy" as the original one. Though "Alternative 4" was still a great album. If you want some doom metal, try bands like Isole, Count Raven, The Obsessed, Pallbearer, Place Of Skulls Or my favourite, funeral doom genre, then there's Abyssic, Frowning, Eye Of Solitude, Ahab, Shape Of Despair...

I'm all about accessible prog. When you can mesh palatability with technicality 🥰 New Contortionist, New Leprous, Tesseract, Caligula's Horse. Sleep Token, Katatonia, porcupine tree, believe it or not even Dream Theater have poppy songs and many I love right up there with the epics.

For a modern doom listen to Khemmis. For me actual the best doom band. All doom fans should know them.

Awesome band. They began as doom metal, but in my opinion they quickly evolved into a more rock/indie sound, which is totally their own. The original of this is on Alternative 4 record. It's a more straight forward rock version.

Anathema is such a great band. I much appreciated this reaction. It's THE one underrated band. There is hardly an album that has more often rotated over the years than a fine day to exit but hindsight is extremely great too.

"Falling Deeper" is an album of orchestral re-interpretations released on 5 September 2011. The album is a follow-up to 2008's Hindsight, for which the band recorded different versions of their past songs.

For some doom, try some songs from their album "The Silent Enigma" (1995) I would recommend Restless Obilivion and A Dying Wish. Also for some heavy works as they started branching out from the doom style try the album "Eternity" (1996). "The Beloved" is one of my favorite songs. I would also recommend the original version of Fragile Dream from the Alternative 4 album as well as One Last Goodbye and Emotional Winter from the "Judgement" album

If you want to check out the doom metal side of Anathema then you need Silent Enigma. They became less doom and more Prog once Vincent took over vocals. Anathema are one of my all time favourite bands. Two albums of theirs you should really check out is Weather Systems and Judgement as they are truly two of the most beautiful albums recorded.

I highly recommend "One Last Goodbye" off their album Judgements. It's about as doomy as you can get without actually being Doom Metal. It's about the singers' Mothers' death and how it affected him.

Unfortunately, the early version of the song is better in my opinion. However, still a great song, really glad you liked it. Anathema are a really complex band, they experimented different styles over time, maybe it would be worth it to dig in a little bit and listen to more songs from them. Keep up the good work and thank you for following my recommendation!

If you're going to do doom metal, you've gotta throw in some Funeral Doom. My personal favorite is Shape of Despair. I'd recommend the songs "Woundheir" or "...in the Mist" but anything off that album is great! Prepare your body.

This was an acoustic version of a more metal version of the song, but it isn't still doom metal. Still great though. And the full version, the original, has more guitars :) Check out their previous bass player's project - Duncan Patterson - Eternity parts IV - XXIII. He takes motifs from their songs he wrote and turns them into a.. score I guess. It really transforms those songs and it's nice if you recognize those motifs but the composition stands on its own. I don't think it's gonna be a great for a reaction video, but I'm pretty sure you'd appreciate it quite a bit.And if you wan't to check their best album, the beginning of their departure from Doom - check out the album Alternative 4 (from which this song comes from).

Dam it dude we have a lot of the same taste. This album kicks ass. Found it when I graduated art school from Pittsburgh in the 90s. I do like the very first album though called silent enigma. Completely different sound and one of my favortie doom metal albums of all time. The orchestration alone is great. These guys are now tied to Stephen Wilson who produced their last couple of albums. There new stuff is greT. Check out Untouchable Pt1and2. Check out Storm Corrosion, Wilson and Akerfelft band.

Ah, so what you've stumbled upon here is Anathema's most popular song of all time, from the earlier transitional period away from doom into a sort of atmospheric rock band. However, 'Hindsight' is an album of reworked, intimate versions of their best songs, so you actually don't even have the original version! Still beautiful though, right? I'm not gonna complain. You're getting thrown suggestions from loads of people so I can see how there was a lot of genre misfiring. I said before that it's a deep and varied genre, so hopefully there's enough personal interest from yourself to repeat this week's theme another time!
@moccles4 жыл бұрын
If you want to explore more Anathema, I would suggest working outwards from the album you already know, so Judgement or A Natural Disaster are perfect places to move, and then just go from there to either the album before Judgement or the album after A Natural Disaster, etc.

This song its the same later style you were already familiar with. Not sure why you didn't do a bit more research if you wanted to do a "Doom metal" track from Anathema or just grab the earliest records like we suggested. I am also disappointed from the fans that just want to hear their favorite songs instead of listening to your very specific request of "Doom metal" and not recommending songs from Serenades or The Silent Enigma to react to.
