Anathema are an excelent, excelent band not simply for the general quality of their music but the very unusual way they manage to reinvent themselves several times over and still remain Anathema. From their death/doom metal roots, through to their Metal Pink Floyd clone albums, through their pop flirtations, through to this, there's always been a strong emotional undercurrent, a heartfelt quality to the music which has always been backed by a very strong sense of arrangements and harmonization throughout. Death Metal Anathema gives you the chills with its twin guitar harmonies over swaths of orchestral keys and hurting moans and growls, Untouchable gives you chills via the absolutely lovely vocal harmonies and a total lack of fear to lay the feelings bare and do a song that is progressive without the need to lay thick on the wank. What's more, in Untouchable, which I think might betheir best song, you can definitely still hear they were a metal band if you're looking for it, it's all over the subtle drumming arrangements and dynamics. Ater all this, I wanna shout out my usual recommendation: Listen to In The Woods- 299 756 Km/s from the Omnio album. It truly is a gem of prog metal from 1997, 14 minutes of pure flow, rivaled only by Green Carnation's Light of Day, Day of Darkness (which would be a great suggestion if the song wasn't, erm, 60 minutes long. )

Followed this band since the get go. Most of what they do, progressing through the ages, is impeccable. Saw them live several times. There’s a depth in their songs and passion in their delivery. Loving seeing your reaction. Singer is twin brother of the bassist. Guy with the curly hair is the third brother. Check more of their stuff out. You’d like it. 😊🤘

He went on about them so much I never gave them a listen. Two years after leaving, I thought "Oh hey, let me give that Anathema a listen!" Mind blown, been a fan since. I am SO glad you chose this particular song by Anathema for a listen. I know you previously listened to "Can't Let Go" and "Thin Air" (the latter of which is another of my personal favorites by the band). I love Vincent's vocals-- but the songs where Lee (their female singer) gets a chance to duet with him or take the lead are so incredible that they give me chills. Her voice is really stunning. If you want an example of a song where she gets to stand out on her own, I'd suggest "Lightning Song". Otherwise, I also highly recommend "Summer Night Horizon"-- I love that one to death.

The main reason you don't hear bands like Marillion,Anathema and Riverside on mainstream is that these groups have all one thing in common. They want control over the music they do and not record companies involved in it.The moment record companies get involved they change the bands music beyond recognition.Basically ruining it.Long may these bands continue down the path they are on.

Love Anathema, loved this reaction! Yes, you need to explore more Anathema. :) They are absolutely phenomenal, consistently good from the start, even though some of the recent albums have disappointed me a little, in the sense they haven't touched me as much. But still, always perfect. The album these two songs come from - Weather Systems - is actually one of those I didn't like so much. However, live, the songs get a whole new life and strength. From this album, my favorite is The Beginning and the End, I can't explain it but it's just perfect to me. Please do a reaction to that one. :)

Killian Curran Also the bass player Jamie Cavanagh is the twin brother of the singer. John Douglas has been the regular drummer mostly. He was out of the band for a little while in the nineties. The last couple of years him and Cardoso switched place halfway through the concert. Daniel Cardoso was never a regular member before. But now John Douglas doesn’t like being on tour anymore and is still involved in writing music. Not only drums. I love the songs he created! Cardoso was introduced because he is a great technical drummer and John has a way of playing drums with a feeling to it. Different timing. I’ve known them since the first album and can’t even count how many of their shows I’ve been to. They’re like family :)
