Almost right, but not quite! Ihsahn is the stage name for the guitarist and vocalist from black metal band Emperor - he just happens to be the brother in law of the vocalist in Leprous, who is the guest vocalist on this song. Ihsahn did another song to feature him on another album - Celestial Violence.

Ihashn is a GOAT. His album Arktis has grown to be one of my favorite albums of all time. He injects black metal into half a dozen genres and does it so naturally and flawlessly nothing feels out of place. A lot of people prefer his earlier stuff but to me Arktis is when he tightened all his experimentation into a near flawless albumn.

Pretty neat. I'm most familiar with Ihsahn from his work back in Emperor, which was fairly intense foundational black metal. Toward the end of their run, he started pushing them toward more layered compositions, and it seems like his solo stuff has really let his penchant for textures flourish. That organ there in the intro had me hooked immediately. Gonna have to check out more of his solo material for sure.

Its awesome rabbit hole to go down listening to his solo work. Its a mix of Emperor, Leprous, and Opeth aka progressive blackmetal. He is such an under rated musician who deserves more fame.

The Eagle and the Snake, On The Shores, NaCl, Hiber, Every song from Arktis, In Rites of Passage, Marble Soul are only a few of the masterpieces that Ihsahn conjured in his solo endeavour. The man is extremely prolific and I am a fan ever since After, even though I only listened to it years after the release.

Ihsahn is a master composer regardless of what genre he plays. If you really want to understand his importance to metal, you have to react to “I Am the Black Wizards” by the legendary black metal band Emperor, in which he is the vocalist, lead guitarist and primary songwriter

Sometimes members from Leprous play in studio and live with Ihsahn. Ihsahn is the guitarist/singer from the legendary black metal band Emperor. He had a drummer on this album. You should analyze Emperor’s curse you all men or with strength as burn.

To expand on what Sean Vieira said, Emperor was the first major recognition from Ihshan which was part of the core of Norwegian Black Metal in the early 90s but if you listen to the final record from Emperor (Prometheus) and the first Ihsahn solo album (The adversary) it takes some of the more progressive elements he was already starting to include in Emperor and expands them way further into at least at first, a blend of black metal and prog metal coming together.

Ihsahn used to be part of Emperor what was very significant band for black metal genre, now he does his solo project, what is something completely different and I am really enjoy it. He is married to Einar`s (Leprous vocalist) sister and before Leprous became more popular they used to play gigs with Ihsahn as session musicians. So he is not exactly member of Leprous, they just do collaborations from time to time.

Ihsahn is the guy who did the harsh vocals in Contaminate me, a little surprised you didn't pick up on that, but I guess it was a while ago? Can't see that your reaction to that song is on youtube though? If it was the live clip you can hear how they introduce him if you are wondering how to pronounce it :)
@jonathanhenderson94224 жыл бұрын
Ihsahn's solo stuff is good, but it's hard not to compare it unfavorably to his work with Emperor, which was truly original and massively influential (they basically invented symphonic black metal). Plus, Emperor's Prometheus is one of my all-time favorite metal albums in any genre. I'm glad Ihsahn is still making music and I very much enjoy his solo work, but Emperor were really something special. Though I imagine you (and most) would prefer the solo work as it's, by far, more accessible (not much clean singing in Emperor).

Drummer in this is Tobias Ørnes Andersen, which used to be in Leprous. Regardig what you said about the drums, he is not the usual kind of drummer you find in this kind of music. He has a different, more subtle approach imo. Worth listen some old Leprous, like the valley, foe or echo, to better appreciate what he does.

It's probably a bit too long for this series, but I would love to see a reaction to Transatlantic. The album is called The Whirlwind. It's one giant song of classic sounding prog rock.
@jonathanhenderson94224 жыл бұрын
I've also recommended Transatlantic, but The Whirlwind is way too long and, IMO, isn't even their best work. Any of their 20-30 minute epics or My New World from their first two albums would be a great intro, IMO.
@connollyc4 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanhenderson9422 You're right, it is too long. I don't know, I still like it more than some of the others maybe it was because it was the first album I heard from them. So, it has a special place in my heart. I love them all though, not a bad album in their catalog IMO
@jonathanhenderson94224 жыл бұрын
@@connollyc I agree. I really don't think they even have a bad song, and I love all their epics. I actually heard SMPTe not long after it was released and I've been a fan since then. Bridge Across Forever is probably my favorite album. I was huge fan of DT before so I heard about them being Portnoy's side project. It's also through Transatlantic I came to discover The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, and Marillion and I'm now a fan of all of them too. That neo-classic prog sound is grossly underrated, IMO. I love metal, but there's something about classic prog that's just feel-good music, probably because of its emphasis on melody and harmony.
@connollyc4 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanhenderson9422 agreed, they don't have a bad song. I think a lot of that has to do with Neal Morse. That's why I feel his era of spock's beard was the best.

Ihsahn is the lead singer and guitarist of Emperor. Reason you dont hear much bass is he uses an 8 string but not in the typical way of djent, he uses it like a normal guitar but gets low notes that go into the bass range. His clean singing is similar to Mikael Akerfedlt from Opeth and his fry screaming is similar to Devin Townsend. All his solo work is amazing, you should react to more Ihsahn since hardly anyone ever does and is highly under rated. He is a combination of Emperor, Leprous, and Opeth to form progressive black metal. Also its pronounced E - son. Here are some song suggestions. Just pick what ever one interests you the most or both. Lend me the eyes of Millennia. Fast pace wall of sound song similar to his original band Emperor but is synth heavy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZSqkKJ7irZ3m7s On the Shores. A very moody progressive black metal song that has a saxophone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYKcZppuqqyfoas
