That synth/keyboard sound in the beginning and the solo around 9:30 is an EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) that the sax player plays. It was super cool to see live as I'd never seen anything like it before. The solo that sounds like a violin is indeed an electric violin and there is a full time electric violinist member of the band. This song is just insane on all fronts. Love it.

Once all this covid shit is over, there are few bands I could recommend seeing live over Thank You Scientist if you ever get the chance. They are just absolutely spectacular and there's no way to not have a great time at one of their shows. Great reaction as always!

I feel so lucky that I got to see them live in Dec 2019. This song was the biggest surprise for me. On the album, it's one of my least favorite tracks (just above Birdwatching), but watching them play it live was incredible. For example, I had no idea that the electronic melody at the beginning was actually an instrument being played, as opposed to a synthesizer.

Wonderful song! More prog with jazz influences than jazz-fusion maybe, but still some kind of "fusion" of the two worlds. Fusion is, after all, a wide "genre" with everything from total improvisation with "rock instrumentation" and beats to a "jazziness" within composed rock songs.
@CriticalReactions

I'm certainly learning about the wide net that this genre casts. I had an idea of what Jazz Fusion is and so far we haven't touched that idea yet.

While this whirlwind of a song is fun, personally I don't find myself revisiting it often. However, my reactions to it the first time was pretty much like yours! Awesome at any rate. Great talk after as well. And, although I don't know the list, I mostly expect this week to be rock with jazz influence than the other way around. :D Let's see if that is the case!
@progperljungman8218

I'm sure you're right about the ratio... Many labeled fusion songs does tend to be more rock in terms of pre-composed material though. Just take one of the real classics: Birdland with Weather Report. More of playing the pre-composed melodies in a playful way but not really improvising much unique melodies in the moment. But then again, Weather Report did a lot of improvisational stuff on other tracks. Who's to say what's "right"...

Seems like you've liked TYS more with each video! I think one interesting discussion this week could spark is what is the "ratio" of rock-to-jazz in each piece. To me, this is actually pretty close to 50/50. While most of it is definitely pre-composed, it also uses a ton of cadences and "sounds" from jazz that it still often feels more like composed jazz than typical composed rock. I mean, other than the absence of lengthy solos, and perhaps the presence of constant time signature/feel changes, this piece is probably as close as TYS has gotten to Snarky Puppy. If you do hear the Miles Davis I recommended this week it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the "mix" of genres there, because to me that's as close as Davis got to rock and it often sounds more like a rock band jamming than a jazz band rocking.

Nice review. Thank you scientist really is great, but I was always turned off by the vocals tbh, but this music is amazing. Not totally sure you'd call it jazz fusion- maybe jazz and deathmetal fusion, but I promise this band is pretty unique. Ever forthright - Screen Scenarios They are a but chaotic, and quite heavy.. I once had the crown by iron thrones is still what I'd love to hear you react to most, but ever forthright has some scary jazz.

I’ve heard multiple TYS songs over the years via Spotify discover weekly, and I’ve said multiple times that they’d be one of my favorite bands if I didn’t hate the singer’s voice. There’s a couple songs I can tolerate it on, but for the most part I can’t stand it. It’s instrumental songs like this that make me want to listen to more of them and hope I can get over that voice.

As much as I love TYS, which is a whole lot, the one thing that gets to me is that they do not seem to find value in playing a solo live like they do on the album. Granted there is something to say about freestyle sections in jazz music or putting a spin on something, but there are also iconic solos that shouldn't be messed with, and sometimes the live solos can be a big departure from the album. I start to wonder if they can reproduce the solos from the albums some times. Ben Karras (violin) may be the exception. Thanks for the TYS! Rube Goldberg Variations is another song of theirs that would fit right in with this theme. Looking forward to a new album from them soon!
