This whole album in like a conceptual theme (lyrically) and every song covers a different scenario in nature. That is why each song has the scientific name of the main topic (a carnivorous plant, a wasp that feed their larvae offspring with spiders, a praying mantis, a piranha, a bird known for impaling its prey and a Japanese bee ). You can only realize when you read the lyrics sheet whether on the cd or the vinyl (which I own HAHA). It was no joke, just a different approach at lyrics and I think it was refreshing, as most death metal bands would go to the usual topics like murder, rape, sickness, zombies and what not. These guys just decided to cover some of the most brutal cases in nature and give it a little brutal death metal twist! I absolutely love the band, I discovered their music back in 2007 and I had the pleasure of seeing them live in my country (Colombia) last year. They crush live, so professional and skilled.

Oh man your worried face at the beginning of this carnage. This is potentially the most creative and skilled drummer/composer in all current death metal. It's good you've gone through watchtower - atheist - cryptopsy into this, as that's exactly the trajectory. This is death metal that very closely mirrors and follows the imagery of the lyric (as disgusting as it sometimes gets) and even has a thematic point to make. The abstract musical pictures match the intensity and motives examined in the lyrics. I am glad you enjoyed the jazz! You will understand Defeated Sanity much better if you go back and cover the whole album Dharmata/Disposal of the Dead. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience for you at this point!

a word on the sound profile: this band is actually brilliant and their production is really ahead of the curve. The grimy guitar tone and the muted, middle production actually creates extremely oppressive churn, a physical push that the band utilizes selectively -- don't get when you have a uniform modern metal blasting production.

This band has been my main obsession this year, got recommended them by a guitar teacher I watch on youtube and Lille Gruber the drummer has just blown my mind to where I can't stop listening to their songs for that alone. Thansk for the reaction!

Naraka is probably my favorite tune from them! That whole album is their best imo I love how jazzy it is.

Death metal has so many different sub-sub genres... Defeated Sanity play Technical Brutal Death Metal and has been at it for a looooooooooooong time. The band was formed in 1993 by the drummer Lille Gruber and his father-who was a jazz drummer/guitarst-when he was only 11 years old. I have no idea how that happened or how they came to write this kind of music together. For the first 15 years father and son wrote all the music together, and since 2008 Lille has been writing everything himself. It's a very interesting band, and I think the jazz background shines through quite well in the music overall, especially in the drumming. It's such an incredibly unique beginning to a band, and I really can't fathom how it all came together. Just jamming some technical brutal death with your pre-teen kid in the early 90s! Opening the entire album with that snare is also such a unique and cool decision!

Should add that both he and his father are/were multi instrumentalists and his dad played in a jazz band called Muck Groh.

The refreshing part is that Defeated Sanity aren't overproduced and mechanical sounding like other bands in the genre. The drums are clearly played by a human and not programmed sounding, and not every instrument is trying to be the loudest. One of the best death metal bands, and they keep it raw.

I accidentally left that in from when I made the Aphex Twin thumbnail and thought it'd be hilarious as a release day thing. I have an actual thumbnail for it that will go up tomorrow. 😅

Amazing band would love to see you react to the full album. Gives me the same feeling as Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity where this should not be catchy but somehow it is. There’s a huge jazz influence behind this band too. If you do another song you should definitely check out Lusting For Transcendence there’s a section where they use accelerando in an awesome way. Also the drummer was trained jazz by his pops and he got his dad into metal so OG Defeated Sanity his dad was playing guitar.

Incredible band, one of the most interesting in the death metal scene. Lille’s drumming and overall musicianship are incredible, i suggest you delve in to more of their work, would be great to see you react to more of their stuff.

I love Defeated Sanity. Despite the speed of their music, I wouldn't say it's too much grind influenced. I think the "jazz" just comes from Lille's background and his tendency to frequently use jazzy chops in his drumming, so it can be a bit misleading, if you expect something jammy or outright free jazzy. A very similar band but with more actual grind influence would probably be Alienation Mental. Check out their song called "Crossed Out From the List of the Dead". As for an actually jazzy example of brutal death metal, I'd recommend this band called Effluence. Imagine Ornette Coleman or Peter Brotzmann but with atonal brutal death metal riffs! Particularly on the album Sarmat.

Funny but seriously... Metal is Jazz/the White (inclusive environment) Oppression music/Musicians Music... (it’s also a form of Modern/20th century classical music)... Art doesn't have to be pretty (beauty is not its only purpose)... Aesthetic beauty is in the ear of the beholder Yeah that was beautiful music for the individuality/freedom of ones own mind... Not all Jazz swings... Fusion Volition Reigns Supreme... this album is a Masterpiece... Extreme Avant Garde Metal/Brutal Progressive Death Metal

These guys have been among those solid tech-death bands for a while now. Very much influenced by Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation, taking the brutal heaviness of the former and mixing it with the greater technical chops of the later. My only issue with them is that they've always struck me as very iterative. Definitely talented on all fronts, but they never hit me with anything that's unexpected or makes me think I haven't heard something like it before.

And what albums of theirs have you heard? This is probably the worst DS song unfortunately, and their most recent album is by far their worst. "Psalms of the Moribund" is one of the most important brutal death metal albums ever and is the very definition of new and unexpected.

Hello hello 👋 WTH did I just listen to..lol..I'm going to need to hear this a few times to get a handle on it..Very weird but I'd need to hear more of the vocals to make a call on them..I love heavy weird music but it's the vocals that decide if it's for me 🤘🧐✌️
