Yes ... Lush was quite a unique band... Miki and Emma’s driving guitar playing is amazing .. Miki’s voice hauntingly soothing.
@OlafProt Жыл бұрын
Unique they were. And really neither shoegaze nor britpop but their own band. Just had the pleasure of seeing Miki here in Belfast, on her book tour. Really interesting and not long enough. It never got past Lush-times! I remember when Scar came out, they were so exciting, we were all entranced by all things 4AD at that point and they were another perfect choice by Ivo. I got to see them in March 1991 at The Old Trout Windsor (supported by the Sandkings I think - remember them?). The only thing I remember about the gig is them walking past us all in th bar with their instruments. I'm so glad they getting their own place in the history of (90s) music now, outside of the standard narrative of Nirvana > Oasis > Blur. This song is impossibly evocative for me, I was 18 when it came out so it must've just hit a nerve because if I hear it at the right moment, it brings a lump into my throat. That sort of lost youth feeling. Uurgh. Isn't music amazing.

2 guitar players, Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Miki was the main singer and Emma provided the harmony vocals. Miki had the fire-engine red hair. This song was written by Emma Anderson (the dark-haired woman). All musical parts and lyrics. Played live during that era it comprised of a 12-string Epiphone or Gibson on rhythm/lead vocals (Miki), a Stratocaster on lead/backing vocals (Emma), bass (Steve), drums (Chris), and various effects pedals on the guitars. Reverb, chorus, some flange or phaser as heard in the outro. Miki wrote some cool songs herself, but Emma's work is generally my favorite. It is exciting to see you reacting to one of my favorite bands... unfortunately the video version of this trims out a minute of this song, including a long instrumental "breakdown" pre-guitar solo that is very chromatic on guitar that is super interesting, literally a chord moved up the neck with no barre (I typed that well before you even addressed the subject, haha!) that was very influential on my songwriting style, teaching me to think WAAYYY outside the box. DIIV in particular is one of those bands where every song on their first few albums was amazing. Oshin is a masterpiece. Side note: though it is not shoegaze, shoegaze fans seem to love the band Washed Out. If gives me that same visceral sense of awe, fascination and calm. The album Life of Leasure was mind blowing when I first heard it. Ironically that was during the summer when I moved to Portland for a few months. 'Like staring into a lava lamp', yeah that's pretty much what shoegaze is about. The genre got its nickname from a music journalist describing how the band looked like they were staring at their feet all the time, mainly because the guitarists were using so many effects pedals they were looking at them more than the audience. To me, shoegaze is about ethereal and fuzzy guitars and bass. Silversun Pickups is a great shoegaze band, tons of heavy distorted bass and bright guitars, Rusted Wheel, Well Thought Out Twinkles, and Melatonin are some great tracks by them. Another band that's got some shoegaze influences I'd say to check out is Scarling, their songs Crispin Glover, Alexander the Burn Victim, and Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole are great to dip your toes into.

Definitely down for you to do more shoegaze! Love how you do other genre and non main stream things that others just aren't doing. Please do Hot Water Music!!! Not shoegaze but super melodic, orchestrated emo-punk stuff.

Some other bands and good songs to react to: Cocteau Twins (Proto-Shoegaze / Dream-pop, they helped lay down the foundations for the genre) - "Carolyn's Fingers", "Aikea Guinea", "Iceblink Luck" My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, Soon Slowdive - 40 Days, Allison Ride - Vapour Trail, Taste, Seagull, Leave Them All Behind

Gotta check out Ride. Not just the shoegaze, but their journey through sounds and styles with each album, and absolute mastery of all of them. Charlatans "Then" & Primal Scream trip inside this house are 2 more I'd suggest. Man that was such a great creative few years for British music... How about some Stereolab too?

Lush is my fave "Dream Pop" band. Pure ear candy. I've been into them since 1992? Don't remember.

I have had so many amazing flashbacks of fake memories, situations/places that never actually happened, yet so vivid in my mind, like being at a house party with loud music, people talking, laying under a bed, holding hands with a girl i just met, just embracing sounds and sight, can even remember sensing the scent of the wood of the underside of the bed... Shoegaze just puts me in this imaginary, daydreaming mood like no other:) As many others have said, you have to check out some of these: Slowdive: When the sun hits; Alison (OR ANYTHING from the album "Souvlaki Space Station") My Bloody Valentine: When you sleep, Only shallow (OR ANYTHING from the album "Loveless") Deafheaven: Unrequited (you could even check the live version from Pitchfork festival) Swervedriver: You find it everywhere, Duel, Duress, Last day on earth, Never lose that feeling, Everso (OR ANYTHING from the album "Mezcalhead" or "Rave Down") Cocteau Twins: Pearly dewdrops drops - it's probably more just "dreampop" but who cares...:)

i wonder if this band pulled massive influences from the cure. the guitar lead tone sounds similar to something you'd hear on a cure album.

This is a sliced up 'single version' of the song. Usually to please the radio station. The longer version is much more complete a song. Thanks for your great take on this band and song.
