0:58 You need a comma. When we connect two independent clauses, we always use a comma before the coordinating conjunction. Steve is tall, and Kevin is short. In addition to this, your sentence is not very good. You should use a conjunction or an adverb that shows contrast.
@aryanaramzal8314 жыл бұрын
exactly i don't understand why a comma is not used at some places to join to independent clauses with a coordination conjunction... is there a specific reason for this ?
@SandraByers-qb5ln4 ай бұрын
This is because It's not complex so it don't need a comma so and stops and slows down the sentence eg although stevie is tall,Kevin is short

Isn't "the playground was closed" a complete thought/action? "today she couldn't because" doesn't seem like a complete thought. Seems to me that should be the dependent clause because it depends on the action of the playground being closed. Am I wrong here? If someone can explain it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
@waznahnaan4 жыл бұрын
I think that "the playground was closed" has the conjunction "because" attached to it. So that isn't a complete thought. "Because the playground was closed". the clause "today she couldn't" is a complete thought but it does look weird...try to look at it this way --> "she couldnt (do something) today". There is an assumption that the action verb is "go swinging" based on the previous clause. If you turn the clauses around, it will help you a lot.. "Because the playground was closed, she couldn't (go swinging) today". That's the complex section of this compound complex sentence.
@CesarHernandez-nh1wz4 жыл бұрын
@@waznahnaan Thanks. I just looked back in my notes and realized that compound sentences are two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, so in this case there has to be an independent clause coming after "but" (but I didn't think it had to be directly after, in order). The video says that a compound-complex sentence is a combo of compound + complex sentences (Has at least 2 independent clauses and at least 1 dependent clause- but it never specifies order.) Not to mention, there's no verb in the independent clause "today she couldn't" (and it's not a complete thought-which is how independent clauses are explained in the first place) so it's very confusing. At least in the sentence "because the playground was closed" has a subject and a verb. All in all, I should've noticed that the act of playing on the swings was implied in that sentence. I guess I wasn't thinking clearly enough. Thanks again for the help.
