Let me see if I can find some time next week. I know I should make a video on this topic but haven't found time to do it :(

Hi Grace! I found a good video teaching balancing chemical equations. I think the guy in the video explains things very well and I don't want you to wait for me to make a video in case you need to know this very soon. Here's the video link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3KWhY2AZ8qgbMk But if you still have questions after watching his video, let me know and I can then make a video address your question.

Hello professor, I see a tiny mistake about the reaction of double replacement. Is that NaOH + CuSO4 -> Na2SO4 + Cu(OH)2 so we can balance the reaction instead of NaSO4 as you mentioned in the video? Thank you!
@professoryu5571
@professoryu5571 Жыл бұрын
Good catch! Yes, it should be Na2SO4 with 2 Na, since Na is +1 and SO4 is -2. I totally skipped one sodium ion, lol. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Really appreciate it! :-)

Hello professor, I had a question regarding that electronegativity.... to tell electronegativity of an atom from a periodic table do we look at the number of valence shells? thank you
@professoryu5571
@professoryu5571 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! "The number of valence shells" may not be accurate because valence shell refers to the outermost shell of an atom and each atom can only have one valence shell. I think you meant number of electrons in valent shells. It would be better to look at a periodic table to determine which element/atom would have lower or higher electronegativity (the ablity to attact electrons). In general, an atom's electronegativity gets higher as you move to the right or move up in the periodic table. I found an image that uses the periodic table to show the trend of electronegativity of the elements with purple being low and red being high electronegativity: sciencenotes.org/list-of-electronegativity-values-of-the-elements/ So F, Cl, and O have higher electronegativity (I doubt that TEAS would use other less common high electronegativity elements). In cases where F, Cl, or O forms covalent bonds with other atoms, the resulting molecules would have polar covalent bonds and are generally water soluble (hydrophilic). For C and H, they have similar electronegativity (even though not the same) and the C-H bond is nonpolar covalent and molecules with lots of C-H are nonpolar/hydrophobic. Other covalent bonds involving H and pretty much other elements (such as N, F, O, Cl, S) would be polar because H is much weaker than other atoms in attacting electrons. Whenever two atoms of the same element form a covalent bond, it's usually nonpolar because they are equal in strength to pull electrons (electronegativity). Sorry the answer is a bit long. Hope it helps and let me know if you have further questions!

There was question to balance equation on test

Hmm...interesting. The newest ATI study manual does not explicitly say that balancing chemical equations would be on the test (different than the previous study guide [3rd ed I believe]). Thank you for letting me know!! Maybe I will make a video on that.

Great question! I have not done a real TEAS test since it costs money and I did not have time to actually sit there for a few hours to do it (LOL). But I have done one of ATI's online practice tests when I was teaching a night TEAS class. And of course, I have spent a lot of time reviewing their 3 versions of manuals.So my information is based on those. 😊
