Gives it a bit more of a dry sound. Just depends on the track really. Found this because I was searching youtube because I don't often find videos where producers talk about subtle compression. I really appreciate it in vocals, especially evident in 70s soul singers like Minnie Riperton and bands like Jamiroquai. Neil Young is a bit of fanatic about this topic too because too much compression and you lose the nuances and natural sound of someone's voice. Curious to get your opinion on it.

To be honest, a lot is personal preference and what you are going for. If you want to emphasize the dynamics of a singers voice then less compression will typically be the way to go. However a lot of modern music likes to use pretty heavy compression to get a more even sound that can be limited to raise the volume.

@@PAFMCo Yeah, when they even out the vocals I just feel more divided from the singer. Its much more real and impactful when I hear the dynamics of their voice.

Yes. I agree. I think that it just depends on the gig, the artist you are working with, and if it’s your own project then what sort of sound you are going for
