Small diesel engines like the 3024C/C2.2 have glow plugs. Using a glow plug adapter is a bit easier than having to remove injectors.

You should also make note that if the piston is on TDC you can also have a issue were it will not rotate the engine, just as in BDC.

Couldn't they make a fake injector with a threaded hole that fits into the injector holes (and that uses an injector hold-down bolt)? Then you'd just screw a pressure gauge into the hole in the fake injector and get a reading.

New to Diesels, I recently did a (cranking) compression check. One cyl was lower, so I did the oil in the cyl to see if it was rings or valves. Note to self: Oil ignites under compression. Buy another compression gauge. Is the leakdown method the only way to check if it's valves or rings?

Hey Josh, been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I don't think I've seen a video on how to break in a diesel engine. I'm an apprentice mobile plant mechanic over in Australia for Komastsu and just finished rebuilding my own motor for my Toyota landcruiser hj75 with a 12ht engine swap and honestly don't know much about engine break in. What do you recommend doing and the best way to break a diesel motor in, especially one with a new cam in it. Thanks, Marcus

Great video sir! Do you ever use a scope to perform a relative compression check? Ever since learning of that a few years back, I've incorporated it into my regular diagnostic routine. Even when you don't think or aren't yet sure you have a mechanical issue, it's a nice quick check to help narrow it down. Let's you know quickly whether more invasive testing will be necessary. Keep up the great work!

Corey Regier Thanks Corey. Does CAT use a grid heater or some other charge air type heater for the winter starting?
@cwj92027 жыл бұрын
CAT does utilize an air intake heater on the 3116, 3126, and other engines I can't remember off hand.
@coreyregier55467 жыл бұрын
Yeah those engines have intake heaters as well as the C7, but no glowplugs... I don't recall seeing an intake heater setup on any other Cat engines either. Trucks in our area rely on block heaters being either electric or a Proheat system. Battery warmers are important also in very cold areas to get the maximum CCA.
@stanpatterson50337 жыл бұрын
These large-bore diesels have such compression that (except for maybe way down at minus40) the air heats up enough enough during the compression stroke for the diesel fuel to ignite. Of course, down at minus 40, it becomes rather difficult. The smaller diesels found in pickups, passenger cars, don't have such high compression, so they use starting aids like glow pins, grid heaters, any trick in the book, so-to-speak, to get the fuel to ignite in cold cylinders. The old trick of using ether to start a diesel can be used on a glow-pin-equipped engine, but the trick is to skip the waiting period for the pins to heat, and begin cranking immediately. Using ether to start a diesel engine of any type can result in serious engine damage if you don't truly understand what you are doing.

One of the valves was sitting a lot higher than the others. He would of seen it when he removed the rocker gear. It's called valve recession, not uncommon on CAT engines.

What is your take on diesel engine oil used in gasoline engines, in particular it appears that Rotella T6 is used in motorcycle engines. What do you use in your car/truck?

The opposite. There ignition system is also their fuel system. Noi coil packs spark plugs throttle bodys with iac sensors in tank fuel pumps to wear out. Older diesels are all mechanical . Very simple to work on . Allot easier then modern cars once you understand them.
