In this video we replace the serpentine belt in our 2016 Toyota Corolla with the 4-cylider ECO engine. We discuss a few tips to make the process easier and look at the belt routing diagram. Belt is an AC Delco 6PK1222. It may also be called 6K480 or 88932683. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments. If this video is helpful please 'like' and 'subscribe' to my channel. It really helps me out a lot. Thanks!

I have a 2014 Corolla S with a manual tensioner like you. Would I use the same size belt that you put in?

@@joewhattoff8754 hi! Thanks for the comment. I would recommend checking with your local auto parts store or a website such as rockauto.com to determine the correct belt for your car. There are too many variables to just assume that they would be identical.

This is a great video. Thanks for a simple comprehensive video. My 2012 Corolla has 220k and I have not replaced my serpentine belt yet. But it's now showing some wear and squeals from time to time. Keep the good content coming Mike.

At what mileage do you suggest replacing this? My 2014 Corolla has 80k miles I heard that maybe it is best practice to use a Gates belt wear guage to check the ribs for wear. It sounds like the EPDM don't crack like the old Neoprene ones.
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment. Personally I'd recommend changing them around every five years, more or less depending on your driving habits and mileage. In my opinion if your car is eight years old and has 80k miles - if you've never changed it before - you're due. Old cars used to have a maintenance schedule for all these items in their owner's manuals. Unfortunately it seems like most manufacturers have done away with that. The "joke" is that with an old car, the manual would tell you how to rebuild the engine. New cars' owner's manuals just say "don't drink washer fluid", LOL. 🤣 I was able to find these resources online for your Toyota Corolla. Might be worth checking out: www.driverside.com/service-schedule/complete/toyota-corolla-2014-593151-1530850-0 www.toyota.com/owners/resources/warranty-owners-manuals.corolla.2014 www.gates.com/us/en/industries/automotive/vehicle-aftermarket/power-up/belt-wear-diagnostic-tips-diagnose-epdm-serpentine-belt-wear.html kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYvZgYCkeppji68 And yes, as you mentioned, if you have access to a belt wear gauge that would be a great tool to help you determine when you need to replace it. Good luck!

I found it helpful to shine a light on the belt while running the engine. Initially the belt was swinging between alternator and crankshaft, so a little extra adjustment fixt my issue. The belt should run smoothly without vibration.

How to get belt over alternator? It’s only halfway up when in place elsewhere.
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 11 ай бұрын
Hi! You need to loosen the bolt that the alternator is mounted to, and also the lower bolt to allow it to pivot inwards, to allow the belt to slip over the pulley. Give that a shot, may want to re-watch the video if it doesn't make sense. Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

Thanks for the video. But because there is no idler tension pulley, how do you know if you are adjusting the belt too tight or too loose? Because I believe you said that it doesn’t automatically tension it. By just marking it with a sharpie get you close enough so you don’t have to fine tune the tension? Thanks
@CompTechMike

Hi Mike! Thanks for checking out my videos. This one is a few years old, glad it is still helping people. Yes - that is the idea behind using the sharpie to mark the position on the tension bolt - as the old joke/saying goes, "close enough for government work". 😉 That said, I would encourage people to use a measuring tool, if they have one available. Takes literally 20 minutes...just start with the engine cold...a breaker bar and a marker....size 12mm and 14mm...and I used a gate's brand 6pk1234... original belt was 6pk1230.... replace your belt at 100miles...mine looked like it didn't need one but once I took it off you can see the fray strings coming apart and mine actually has a gash on it...so replace it no matter what!

My alternator doesn’t swing like that to loosen the tension on the belt I’m not sure what’s going wrong on my end. Do I have to take that tensioner bolt all the way out?

Hi! Thanks for the comment. Assuming your car has the same engine as the one in this video, you shouldn't need to remove it entirely. Did you check that the bolt down near the bottom has also been loosened? (shown at 3:48 )

@@yevheniilytvyniuk778 Hi! Sorry to hear you're having a hard time getting the bolt loose. Did you double-check that you're working on the correct bolt? Maybe soak it in some WD-40 or PB Blaster, or use a breaker bar or longer wrench to get more leverage. It's always possible that someone who worked on it before you might've tightened it with an impact gun. Good luck!

How do you stretch it?
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment. Not entirely sure I understand your question. Automotive belts stretch naturally over time. Once they stretch too far they will start to slip and squeal. You can alleviate that condition somewhat by adjusting the accessories, but generally you should start thinking about replacing the belt once it has begun to stretch. If you have purchased a replacement belt that is not sufficient length, your best bet is to go back to your retailer and purchase a different one. Don't try to stretch a belt that is too short to "make it fit". Hope this helps!

Hello. Ive been watching your vids and noticed that you own a 1st gen Colorado. Im looking for one, but Im concerned about the mpg that it gets. How many mpg do you get? I need it mostly for city use.
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I get around 300 miles per tank, on a combination of city and highway driving. Roughly 17-18 mpg. I do a lot of maintenance on it to keep it running well, but the Colorado is not a great truck for mpg (even the new ones aren't a lot better).
