A vast range of new materials could, in principle, be produced. While the properties of some can be anticipated in advance, others are “unknown unknowns”. Robin Grimes, Professor of Materials Physics at Imperial College London, discusses how to predict what new materials it would be worthwhile to experiment with creating.
