As am I. I’m a computer engineering major at a T5 engineering school with a 4.0 and I have plenty of time to go to parties, eat with friends and go to clubs. I’ve never been more social. I get plenty of sleep as well. Just be efficient about your studying. Sometimes I feel as if people avoid learning how to study efficiently because it removes the perceived hype of rigor. Spend some time at the beginning of the semester learning how the class works and then make adjustments so it takes the least amount of time out of your day.

@TheVarunCastle2 жыл бұрын
@@gamerboy13stupid89 I think you should apply to an engineering degree if you're up for it and if you get accepted you should definitely go for it. Nothing's easy especially when it comes to engineering but it's about what comes after and what you do with your time during your degree. What comes after is about job outlook, you gotta ask yourself "is engineering something I want to do or I am interested in? Or am I chasing money?" Either mentality is fine because with engineering you can choose both, this isn't so true with other degrees. Engineering is shortcut to a 6 figure job, but if and only if, and this is an important thing, you make the right connections. This is where the time you spend during your degree becomes important (especially WHERE and on WHAT you spend it on) First you gotta make a plan, what specific career path you want to go. Engineering is a broad degree so unless you know where you want to go, you will not be able to make your time college worthwhile. Decide that from what you are good at, or can be good at. are you good with computers? Do you have a better technical skill or better creative skill? Do you like hands-on work? Do you have leadership skills? This will help you decide what's best for you and your interests. Or if you're just chasing money, search what's the highest earning career in engineering and pursue that. Time is everything man, you CANNOT waste it. So when it comes to courses in college, do them not for the sake of learning them but for the sake of completing them, because they literally do not matter once you complete them (except calculus because it is foundational towards your next calculus courses). Don't do courses to learn from them, do them to get a decent GPA and get out as soon as you can. What time you don't spend on practicing (not learning because practicing is what matters in college), spend time on building WORTHWHILE CONNECTIONS and building yourself! Both go hand in hand. You need a good connection for the gym to keep you fit, good connections for study groups who are like minded in getting stuff done. If you lose people in the process don't worry because people come and go. But the most important thing in all of college is spending time on career preparedness. If your college has a career focus department or something like that, spend time making connections there. Go to career fairs, or reach out to alumni who are in careers you want to be in. All in all, engineering comes with not just what you do within the degree but what you do outside of it. That balance of things is where you can succeed the most. I've made my mistakes and trust me this is the way to go. Balance connections, building yourself, and your courses. Also pick up a job while you're at it, extra cash helps in college to help tie ends and keep you hardworking. Hiring managers also like to see that you worked during your college time. This is my advice, take it as you will but it's the best you will probably get. Do courses to complete them and get a good gpa, focus on career preparedness, building a ton of good connections and building yourself. I see your name is gamerboy and I'm telling you rn don't get addicted to video games, it'll steer you away from what's real. Make it part of your balance.

As a final year CE student, there's also a "downside" (depends on how you look at it) where the number of CE students is very small compared to more popular degrees like Computer Science. Only about 50% of my fellow course mates made it through the final year too. The rest either switched courses or ending up repeating a few classes, not that there's anything wrong with that. The small social circle needs to be kept in mind when pursuing this degree as well. My 2018 batch only had below 20 people and currently, there's only a handful left.

It also really depends on who teaches you the material. Profs can either inspire you to keep going and they make the material accessible or the prof ends up completely turning you off from the material due to a poor teaching style, lack of help, and/or being discouraging. I had a math professor who discouraged all math majors from pursing graduate school citing that the market for Math MAs/MSs and PhDs is "too saturated".
@levibeam1003 жыл бұрын
he has a point though. If you think you’re going to get a PhD and become a Mathematician, the chances of that is super unlikely. Well that's not 100% true a lot of computer eng tend to work in software more than hardware due to demand but, you can still work in hardware.If you really like hardware look into mechatronics engineering or just electrical engineering, both are great
@jostafro4967 Жыл бұрын
I did bs in ee, ms in ee (electromagnetics), and phd in ce. I think the math is a little harder in ce and the physics was harder in ee. As far as research goes, its a lot easier in ce because the experiments can mostly be done on a computer (im doing computer vision) vs building a physical experiment.

Since you switched from biotech to bioinfo you may be able to answer my question. So i really like biotech and everything related to genetic engineering, microbiology ect...and my uni offers a BS in biology and another one in bioinformatics, in your opinion do you think it's better to switch to bioinfo? Like is it easier to find a job and a great salary with a bioinfo degree?
@AU240973 жыл бұрын
@@jean-claudefayad7612 that's difficult to answer. I guess job opportunities are more on the bioinfo side of things.. As more and more data is being generated, there is an increasing demand for analysts. And which one you'll choose is totally dependent on your interests.. I made the switch because of a number of reasons...one of them being that I absolutely love computer science and programming. I opted for biology and then biotech because it fascinated me more, ignorant back then that a combination between the two (bio and comp) even existed. There are so many possibilities in bioinfo, you can do anything from data mining and finding novel genes to making personalized medicine. Biology as a degree sounds more generalized. Don't opt for it unless you know exactly what is being taught in the course and have a solid plan on what you want to do after you graduate

I too love computers. When I built my first computer, I just loved it, I like that hands on stuff, but I also like the flexibility of doing software. Combine that with I'm always thinking about and fascinated about the future especially with technology, as eye rolling as that can sound. That's why what I find is, when I'm doing something that I'm passionate about even if it's really hard, I can look past it as apposed to getting all out of sorts when having to write a lab report in biology class. Like that doesn't interest me at all. But computers, computer engineering, I get excited whenever I think about it and that's what I'm going to do in college

I think I would recommend CPE majors look into focusing on embedded systems, there are both hardware and software positions regarding this but even in the software side it’s a less competitive field than regular software engineering so interviews will be easier on average, also you will be more qualified than CS and EE people the vast majority of the time so it makes your chances of getting the job are pretty good especially if you take extra classes on it your Sr year.

I'm a computer engineering major. I also consider myself to be a cs/EE double major. CE just ties the two together. I have had job interviews for software engineering (GM), electronics engineering(AMD) , and electrical engineering (local power company). At my school there's definitely a focus on software engineering. But there's also definitely a focus on electrical engineering. And then there's classes to tie the two together. You can really do anything in tech with a computer engineering degree. For example, for my master's degree I will be taking cyber security, machine learning, cpu & gpu design, and some EE classes. It really is the best of both worlds if you're undecided between CS and EE like I was. Now I just want an aerospace engineering degree 😬

Yeah I'm not a big fan of that 2% job growth number for computer hardware engineers. If you look at the market today, there's already a rise in embedded systems and IoT devices being used in society. A lot of the companies that build IoT devices right now are trying to make the switch to custom hardware (like Tesla's computers for autopilot); so chances are the demand for computer hardware engineers are going to increase thanks to the rise of IoT. But let's not forget there are other technologies that also demand custom hardware as well, i.e. like TPUs and specialized hardware accelerators for deep learning, I would imagine there would be a need for specialized hardware accelerators for AR/VR headsets (I would imagine you'd need smaller more power efficient GPUs if you want to create AR glasses that look like regular glasses), robotics will probably also require more computational power and more durability from their computer chips, the list just keeps going on. Furthermore, there's a lot of research into new computing paradigms such as quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, optical computing (basically big companies like Intel and IBM are trying to build computers that don't operate on the classical Von Neumann architecture). So if you're willing to get a masters degree or a PhD, you might be able to get into those fields. The point is, there's going to be a lot of silicon in the future, and that means the demand for computer hardware engineers will be certainly increase. Source: I work as a machine learning engineer for a big federal defense contractor in the DC area, I'm doing my CS masters, and I hang out with quite a few computer engineers.
