@@ShaneHummus This is simply one of my favourite videos on your channel! I study in Canada and at my university, CS and SE basically have the same classes up until third or fourth year. In fact, SE students get to do a project in their final year by reaching out to a client and build an actual product based on their requirements whereas CS majors do research and write a thesis, but both majors do at least 4 CO-OP terms at tech companies in the summer. I found out that SE is really heavy in Physics and Chemistry (and you pretty much have to take classes they make you), whereas CS is more math-related (and you have more electives and flexibility). For that reason, SE students can't take CS classes in artificial intelligence but CS students can take these classes as well as some of the SE classes as electives. Interestingly, the stats on my university website are that the job placement rate of CS majors is 100% after two years whereas SE's employment rate is only 89.6%. I would say that both SE and CS are very similar and in some cases won't make any difference going into the tech field. In the future, I might switch over to CS since the chem and physic classes are taking too much of my time to code :)

Next year, I’ll be an incoming freshman majoring in electrical and computer engineering. It’s a dual program where you choose electrical or computer your junior year, and from there you study a specific area. If you choose computer engineering, you can focus on software engineering, which is pretty cool and is the plan as of now. Awesome video man!
@kool2btrue4 жыл бұрын
Well technically you learn both, or rather how software and electronics interact. That link between the 1's and 0's and electrical currents is demystified. That was my major, I pursued the software development path but work in a company that interacts heavily with hardware. I did however take both CS and ECE courses all throughout.

Dude Leaving all bs aside In my opinion a degree is always usefull. It shows up 4 - 5 years commitment to something. You make friends, who might be the brilliant minds on earth. I've know excellent programmers from university. You have professors (who hopefully in a best case scenario are excellent in what they're doing, not seeing anyone in particular) Well it opens you doors to other fields including management, i know people who are working as manager to restaurants or any other chain. You get smarter i mean it you can compare how programmers think vs other people and you might astonish yourself. I know you at least get a job.
@KevinO-h7m6 ай бұрын
By the way picking your university is important, the greater the prestigue the better the study plan at the cost of you working harder to pick the pace, enrolling into it means more hardwork and commitment than anyone else. No one grants a job, and looks awful once you get out of it.

Do Computer Engineering, it's freaking amazing! If you decided you like software more you can still take those jobs as a CE major. If you like pure software then you'll want to do a CS or SE degree. I would go for CE though since it gives you a better insight into how these electronic components operate on a deep level and can help you debug code in such a way of thinking.

@@trevorscott3275 thank you. I will see what my passion is towards in the next few years so that I will decide btw CE vs CS/SE. Thank you for your advice!
@kool2btrue4 жыл бұрын
I second that, but I'm biased since I did CE. CS will allow you to explore CS a bit more since your courses will focus in only one discipline, but CE will give you deeper understanding of hardware and how software actually interacts with it. You will learn to program low-level stuff that goes directly on the metal. Once you graduate, CE offers a wider array of entry level positions since you can pursue 2 disciplines, although once you get in one you usually stay in it.
@dudex96393 жыл бұрын
If you are interested in hardware more than software and would think of a job in software as a second choice or backup plan go for CE, if you are most interested in software and it is definitely your dream work, you will be better in CS since it gives you more knowledge and therefore will let you succeed in this field which leads to you landing potentially better job (you can still get good software job with CE degree but you will have to teach things first)

Hey Shane, in your opinion would it make sense as a 30 year old college returnee to persue this degree? thanks for the video!
@blankiscute43502 жыл бұрын
I can answer as a 27 year old who did this. Since we are only 3 years off, maybe I can offer some help in this question. YES and NO. At this point if you are 30 years old and dont have any experience in the field, the degree will do absolutely nothing at all. You'll be 34 years old with no tech experience. Even if there is a company who hires people without experience, a company would rather hire a 22 year old out of college rather than a 34 year old out of college. They will think you waste time and no company wants a time waster. Those are the reasons for NO. Here are the reasons for yes and what you will need to do: PROJECTS PROJECTS PROJECTS! By the time you finish your degree you should have tons of projects done and displayed as a resume. You gotta show them that you didnt waste time. I know certs dont mean much, but getting some certs at 34 years old will probably help. Remember internships help a ton! But what I noticed is companies prefer younger people for those internships, so finding a basic job in tech while doing your degree can get you that added experience, even helpdesk. Get a helpdesk job by your second year, the last thing you want is you are 34 years old and only then you can get a helpdesk job. Conclusion: It is worth it if you go above and beyond. It's worth it if you create projects and learn some coding and frameworks on your own while you do your degree. Its worth it if you can get some sort of internship by your second year or at least a tech intro job like helpdesk at your second year. But if you are just going to get your degree, nobody will want you at 34 years old compared with just a degree compared to a 22 year old with just a degree. So... use experience as leverage.

4 years to get a bachelors degree. Can be in anything. Just make sure you have the medical school prereqs. You can easily search them up Take the MCAT, basically the standardized test to get into medical school 4 years of medical school. End of 3rd/beginning of 4th you apply to residency. 5 years of residency. And most Radiologists do a fellowship that’s normally 1 more years So in total it takes 14 years to become a Radiologist from start to finish

Hey, i'm currently 15 years old and live in the Netherlands. In 3 years i'll be graduating secundary school on the vwo-level and am orientating for good studies to do after. Will it be a good choice to do technical computer science together with Applied Mathematics or electrical engineering? How much work would it be? And is it worth it? great vid btw and thanks in advance!

That will depend a lot in your country. Most US universities will not allow students to double major when already in CS or engineer. This is because the course load is pretty intense in each and there is little intersection between disciplines. I studied Computer Engineering in the US, which in simplified terms is the combination of CS and Electrical Engineering. It was rough, so much so that we had the least graduates out of any engineering program on my year. Usually each engineering discipline has a group of incredibly difficult courses that filters out students. With double the disciplines you may face this twice.

@@kool2btrue The Technical university of Twente offers a combination of applied mathematics and technical CS in exchange for both bachelor degrees. The university also offers an EE course, as what I have heard Twentes version of CS overlaps EE a bit. I get that EE and CS is a bit too much, how would you recommend computer engineering? Is it good compared to the combo Twente is offering?
