@@ShiggitayMediaProductions Nice try, but I got statistics. You wouldn’t want your computer to be a glorified smartphone right? Especially for gaming and creative work. You need a real Intel or AMD processor and real Nvidia or AMD graphics to do real computing.
@ShiggitayMediaProductions3 жыл бұрын
@@aimwell8813 While I will agree that an Intel based system does very well with creative work and other stuff like gaming, most people don't buy Macs (M1 or Intel) with gaming as their primary focus. "Real computing" is subjective too. I don't know what stats you have but the M1 is no slouch when it comes to creative work (like photo and video editing) and overall everyday performance. I have an M1 Mac mini and it's a super powerful machine. Am I fanboying a little? Sure. It's my right to. I don't mind if my computer is a "glorified smartphone". The M1 in fact is more than that. Sure it's based on the A14 series of iPhone/iPad chips, but I'm sure your stats include this fact: THEY'VE BEEN TWEAKED FOR macOS! Lastly, I'm aware you were trying to troll me here, and believe what you want, but it didn't work. I'll also let others come out of the woodwork and school you on the M1 and Macs in general as well. 12:43 Still rocking my Early 2008 24" iMac as my daily driver. Mine's in much better condition than yours though! Not much of the original machine remains. Over the years I've maxed out the CPU, RAM, put in an SSD and replaced the logic board and LCD. I've replaced the video card a few times too because the NVIDIA 8800 GS had a high failure rate, so I ended up downgrading to the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO and haven't had problems since *touch wood*. It's a great machine and holds up reasonable well enough. That said, it's definitely time to upgrade!

Was hoping to see more disassembly, would love a video on "Upgrading Every iMac". Despite looking like a G5 the first Intel iMac was brutal to take apart, every layer of plastic had to come apart to get to the hard drive, lots of tape, breakable clips, and cable gotchas. The G4 on the other hand was a pleasure, with a round motherboard, thermal grease on the chassis, 6 inch long aluminum screws, a gorgeous white fan. The last ones need a heatgun to get into, and are a $5 fee for the adhesive strips but are otherwise easy to deal with. I imagine nothing but the screen can be replaced on the new ones, if we are lucky.

Back in the day, extremely high refresh rates were important for basic comfort; 60Hz refresh meant a 60Hz flicker, which caused headaches (especially when in a room with fluorescent lights which were also flickering at 60Hz). These days, refresh rate is only useful for framerate, which is nice but not so vital.

Great video Ken. It is nice to see the history of things, some of us has used for ages. Thanks! Love it. Consider changing perspective from the computer to a workflow or process. Like working with videos, photos etc. What was the workflow on the first iMac compared to now, including distributing your end product. I started in 1989 with an IICX and a 21" black white monitor, DTP was new and changed everything in the graphics- and advertising industry, almost over night. From 1987 to 1991, while I was under education, we went from 20k$ systems (CR Tonic 360) to 5-7k$. A professional graphics workstation (now including video editing) is still around the same price level. Productivity from the Linotype workstation to the Mac was 4x in the first try. NOT including any graphics at all. The CR Tonic 360 had print capability, so the text output was on photographic paper, that had to be developed in the darkroom. Only text. To get the text and graphics out of the Mac in high quality, you needed something like a Postscript RIP Linotronic 300 / 2400 DPI. So sitting with a Mac working with Pagemaker, QuarkXPress , Freehand, Illustrator etc. was like taking a huge step into the future - in one giant go. There was a time before DTP and a time after, for sure. And the same happened to the photo- and video production industry. I actually bought a 2020 iMac 27 from a video production company. They are now working on Macbook Pros.

It allowed me to play Unreal Tournament on 800x600 and Quake III Arena at 640x480 - both was unthinkable of with the original ATI Rage 128 Pro with 6 MB VRAM. PS: the first two iMac iterations (Revision A and B) maxed out at 384 MB RAM (128 +256), which was still awesome at the time. Thanks for that Video Jaunt back in Apple History! I'd like the G4 reviewed as It was my Last Mac before my 2012 which I just replaced with the M1 Mac-Mini!

I have been using Windows for 13 years now but I still admire Apple's designs.

I loved using OS 9 and OS X on those old iMacs in school. The design language of OS X when it had the more jewled look still reigns as my favorite aesthetic design on a computer to this day, and the move away marked the downfall of Macos for me.
