This was a great interview with someone who understands the issues and problems in the Middle East. I would have listened if it had lasted several more hours. If one wishes for a better understanding of the mindset(s) of current, and past, Middle Eastern leaders, then read Con's books. Thank you Andrew Roberts for this fantastic interview.

I don't know why he is talking complete tosh at the beginning about Desert Rats. The Desert Rats were never an elite unit. They were named by the Germans as the Rats of Tobruk. They were just the unfortunates who found themselves in Tobruk and Libya as the Germans came through. They included Polish and Australians. Desert Rats became the nickname of the British 7th Armoured Division serving in North Africa. Now, the 7th Armoured Brigade uses the same "Desert Rat" Jerboa sitting on hind legs in Red on a Black background rather than the 7th Armoured Divisions Orange on a Black background. I have served in both 7th and 4th Armoured Brigade. The 4th Armoured Brigade was part of 7th Armed Division but was already using a Black Jerboa (squatting down) set in a white circle in a black square. Now, the Black Jerboa on a Green background. Both Bde's are formed from whatever units are currently assigned to them. Neither Unit currently refers to themselves as desert rats (in Germany, now in the UK) but both acknowledge there heritage.
