try using gas arrows and shoot them along the path the enemy takes. in this video, you could have used 5-6 gas arrows along the path they took and probably killed them all before they got to your base. rinse and repeat for each wave.

I've done that once before and the purge level 8 deemed my base unable to find the path and I got no rewards just frustration and changed up my tactics to let them get to the first door so they would stop a quarter of the way through the waves

His point is that it's literally a 1-kill level up to 20. Shoot 1 arrow and kill a gollem and the follower is leveled up from 0 to 20 in the span of 1 second.
