I love these kinds of build videos, mainly because I am SO bad at building. I have a blast in early game with just some basic shelter, then mid to late game I need to move and build a more solidified base. I find the best location, trek my materials over, then spend the next several hours failing. I end up getting irritated and just stick with a square box. Then I usually quit the game for a month or so. I really benefit from these "fundamentals" videos. Thanks!

It's an interesting way to do things. When I build water bases (looking at Savage Wilds here), I do something similar, though it's usually a combination of pillar and foundation. When I'm on dry land though...planning? Never heard of it. I tend to build into mountain sides and it invariably turns into a gigantic Jackson Pollack inspired pile of stonework whose only pattern is driven by whatever I think looks cool at the moment. Revisions are frequent!

The only reason I use foundations is because of purge spawns. If the purge is off pillar away if not you are forced to use foundations to stop the purge from popping up in your walls.

I started using pillars/fence foundations after I've heard from some server admins that large amount of foundations is a major cause of server lag and fps drops (second to large amounts of thralls), I haven't found any info on this, but I don't have problems loading my bases, while I massively drop frames near bases built by other players (especially those with foundations as external "compound" walls, even medium size)

I've heard from a few reliable modders that the "foundations take extra resources" is a myth from a long time ago when a bug did cause them to take extra resources. They haven't done so for a long time, as far as I know, though it still persists. My main reasons for not using foundations are aesthetic and practicality, I always find P&C is much better

I found out use stairs along the foundation! It is only the top step there make a nice edge around the buildings, rest is under ground, it just look so good, like a rain water guther…. Try it! 😀

I'm kind of weird.... I often have random foundations throughout the build. I started building with the pillar method when I bought the Nemidian DLC and I hated the wood foundations for what's essentially a stone building. I love your work and am inspired by the beauty f your builds.

Overall it's a great video and I love it thanks ^^ I still use foundations a fair lot, but it's more because on a lot of RP servers, you have build tile limits. Most of the time... ceiling+pillar eats 2 tiles, while foundation only eats 1 :(

Ha. I've been doing this for three years. However, I still add foundations buried in the building to establish ownership and to block large stones and trees from respawning since the pillar/tile combo doesn't always do it.

I have been using a combination of solid foundation blocks and pillar and ceiling platforms. I use solid foundation blocks mainly for massive flying buttresses on very tall structures.

Ummm . . . . . . Yes! Absolutely love Ceiling/Pillar builds. I was watching another KZbin channel where he ( @AngaarUK ) decided to try the Ceiling /Pillar method purely on the basis that he was doing Siptah and there was more wood available than stone so he built has base out of Flotsam. Worked a treat and I believe it was purge proof because the purge didn't used to attack bases with no foundations - not sure what the situation is now though but it seems a lot better Aesthetically.

I really wish that they had the White Stone walls that match the Yamatai Foundations. I also really despise the Foundation/Wall gap but love the nice white Stone of those foundations or the Yamatai ramps used in Conjuction with the Nemedian, Stable or Khitan walls when not using the Yamatai walls for my builds. I would really love to get the same look without having the Bamboo Tatami mat floor surface since without mods you can not place ceiling tiles directly on top of the foundations. Heck I would even be happy to see them add a version of the Yamatai foundation that just has a stone top as well similar to the Sandy and no sand foundations of the Arena foundations and ceilings.

It all depends on the build, what style are you after. Also you can always cover up the side of the foundation with a wall piece of your choosing keeping the floor of the foundation. Some ceiling pieces might not fit good as a floor.

just started using pillars on my water/land base Im on the isle of siptah and so my goal is to basically interconnect thru each point of the island that Im on which is the desert that way I can send my thralls or myself in many directions more easily vs having to swim constantly which can be a drag.

I've been doing this for most of my base layouts for 2-3 years, just the fact that you can use wall pieces attached at the bottom of a ceiling instead of having to always rely on fence foundations made it a no brainer to me :) Personally I think they should just turn all fence foundations into walls and give walls the same properties as a fence foundation, this just makes creative buildings so much easier and better looking... Btw thanks for the video on this subject, hopefully Funcom notice these things and consider them when making changes to the building system :)

I converted very quickly to this method in Ark SE when i was playing on an elder scrolls rp server and trying to build a city. It was a game changer. Ive always liked conans foundations, especially the stackability of them. But ill play around and see if it opens some new opportunities to me.

I have a design I have been perfecting. I will try this in my next build. having the pillars locations know from the start. You can build open plan on the 4 spans. What I like is I can put chest in the basement give me more options for the spaces.

I use foundations and turn stability off, as I only play single player. I do admit though that with my experience in Ark has taught me, using pillars and celling tiles for floors does mean you don't have to worry about having a flat surface as much. I will give it a try in the Highlands for sure.

i've been using this method exclusively for a few years. yes, aesthetics rank pretty high, but the most important reason is to disqualify my main dwelling from the purge. i can then build a foundation based bait structure somewhere else to lure a specific purge of my choosing.

I’ve actually been using the pillar/ceiling method from the get go because I love building Venice type water bases. But for the uneven wall on top of the foundation issue, I also hate it and found putting a wall down first then adding the foundation to it helps. I’ve seen people be able to just add walls to their foundations, I’m assuming this is either a mod or earlier version of the game because I can’t do that. Console player. :P

I fully agree with the flexibility in build. Not necessarily design because that can be accomplished just as easily with foundations in my opinion. The only "real" problem with building with ceiling and pillars is the cost of construction when not in creative mode. Also server stability due to the amount of extra building tiles you utilize with ceiling and pillars. Just for a flat wall you triple your tile count by using that vs foundations. If you are not an admin and must grind for materials that is a major factor in building.

@@Angelovizk Not sure if anything changed about this recently, but it used to be that a purge identifies your base by the first foundation you put down. If you start with a pillar and *never* place a foundation, you don't get a purge at all, because they essentially "don't know your base exists".

I'll try your recommendation I just find it a tad easier to delete foundations and also 1-click copy-paste them. They're also faster to build 1/8th steps with the help of a fence foundation, but I guess the same could be done with a floor and a wall next to a newly placed foundation piece. Just in reverse, bringing the floor level up 1/8th instead of lowering it. (edits) That gap on the outside with the Arena foundation & wall can be easily covered up with an attached wall on the foundation. You know it =D

It is definitely a little faster to build with foundations, and the stepping trick does require them, though you can use a foundation to get the snap points, place ceilings and then a pillar beneath them. Also I'm pretty sure you can't attach a wall to a foundation without the LBPR mod, I learnt that the hard way a long time ago 😂

I agree with you. But as Age of Sorcery entered, the first bug was to make pillars enter demolish state. My overwater base, supported by pillars, was discovered by a passer by, and completely demolished, while offline.

I just started playing Conan Exiles when it became available on PS Plus Extra and I've had more fun building stuff than actually playing the game. Still not entirely what the actual aim of the game is but building houses and forts right next to hostile settlements and just going on raids is great fun! Btw, can you explain why at some of my building locations I can build vertical elevators of any height yet at others I can only build them if I have walls that are at least 8 blocks high?

Sir you are forgetting the most important thing when you do a pillar ceiling tile style build because the purge is only triggered by bases that have a crap ton of foundations so if you use pillars and ceiling tiles and keep track of the numbers that you're using you can actually make a base that will be purged proof

These tips are more geared towards RP builds. However it was recorded before the Age of War was announced, so with the changes coming to the purge in Chapter 2, it seems like spawning might be made more consistent and thus pillar bases won't matter as much

I built my first pillar and ceiling base a few days ago. I also hate the exterior look of foundations they do not match the walls drives me crazy. But the grass clips through the floor and creatures were spawning inside my base. Is there a fix for this or is it just how it is?

That's just how it is. However, with pillars and ceilings you should always build a little higher up from the ground anyway; otherwise stairs and covering walls will just look weird. And you don't need a pillar under EVERY ceiling, so if you have a bit of space underneath left, you can sink a foundation into the ground, despawning grass and animals ;-)

You have a couple of options there. The first is to build a little higher to block out the grass and such. The second is to place a foundation or peaceable beneath problem areas to despawn the grass

Yeah, in PvP your base is essentially paper-thin if you use only pillars and ceilings. But for creative building it's the way to go ;-)
