Some weird things here - is he from Alaska and visiting and hunting? Because getting a bear permit is a lottery you enter if you're not from the state (I think you may be allowed one bear every four years without a lottery if you are a resident, but you still have to apply for a permit). If he won the lottery for a bear permit it seems like that's what you'd be focusing on. My dad used to hunt in Alaska and the UP (in Michigan) for bear and that's what I recall from him. Even if you are a resident you still have to apply for permits. I might be confusing things though, it's been some time since my dad's been around. It just seems weird. Moose and bear seasons do run at the some of the same time. Someone correct me if they can! This is the second time I've heard this clip and it bothers me a little.

First Conan video I've ever disliked watching. Ever. And I've been a fan since 1993. So disappointed in Team Coco for posting this. Killing an animal that was not threatening, and should be federally protected anyway, is not funny and it's not something to admire or celebrate. Especially for "sport" and not for emergency food. (And before anyone accuses me of being a hypocrite, I've been a vegetarian for years and rarely ate meat before that.) Also - some of this dude's story sounds like BS to me. As an animal rescue advocate and volunteer, this is very close to my heart, and I just needed to say this.

I wouldn't want to hunt animals either, but I have to admit I do always find it strange that more people cry about hunting animals than the horribly inhumane factory farm conditions of most cattle and poultry. At least the thing had a good run at life and wasn't forced to sit in a pen its entire life. I kind of feel the people who hunt for meat are the humane ones. Though it'd be a shame to kill a grizzly just so you can mount a skull on your shelf.
@benzaiten933
@benzaiten933 3 жыл бұрын
both are horrible and I do completely agree that live stock should be treated much better, especially because its only purpose is to be slaughtered for the meat industry. however, killing this bear served absolutely no purpose besides feeding the ego of this dude and his father-in-law. it's not like they were hunting for meat and sustenance, it was just a pastime, for fun. so that is why so many have a problem with it. there also is a difference between native folks who truly hunt for food and resources and those folks who clearly don't. I have no problem for natives to live and hunt according to their culture but this here is a very different situation and is no different than rich folks going to Africa to hunt a lion just to stuff it and mount it on their walls.
@thorjelly
@thorjelly 3 жыл бұрын
@@benzaiten933 Except the guy literally mentioned eating moose/elk, so the implication is that they actually do eat what they hunt... most of the time. Some people do eat bear but most don't, so yeah, like I said, it's a shame to kill one just so you can mount a skull on your shelf. But a LOT of people hunt for food, and make a point to eat everything they kill, even if it's a grizzly. I make a point of not making assumptions. And I'm not sure what the difference between that and a native is.
@benzaiten933
@benzaiten933 3 жыл бұрын
@@thorjelly yes, he mentioned eating moose which at least means the meat won't go to waste. but then thing is, they aren't reliant on moose or other animals. they can just go to the supermarket and buy whatever foodstuff they want. unlike native folks who might not have this option or don't wanna purse it based on their culture. it is fine to hunt animals as food sources if no other options are available but that wasn't the case. the main reason to hunt moose - and bear - was for sports, for the fun of it, to probably feel 'manly' and what not. thus it was completely unnecessary.
@thorjelly
@thorjelly 3 жыл бұрын
@@benzaiten933 If you think just going to the supermarket and buying meat there is the better alternative, then you are completely missing my original point. If you didn't know, a lot of supermarket foods are "reliant on other animals", and many of them involve much more needless cruelty than hunting does. If your argument is that everyone should practice veganism if that's an option for them, that's a completely different discussion I'd rather not indulge. Also, this is Alaska. Shipping there is often very expensive. Some parts of it get completely shut off from access for parts of the year. A lot of people there don't have access to regularly stocked supermarkets. It probably isn't fair to assume that the products you are used to are as accessible or inexpensive.
