Conan left Late Night with Conan O' Brian then was named the host of The Tonight show for a few months before Jay Leno was given his position back from NBC as he requested that he be given his position back as the host of the tonight show, as NBC fired Conan from the Tonight Show because of low ratings and time slot issues(as Jay Leno had a show as a lead in to The Tonight show with Conan O' Brian)

The last part of his speech is pretty devastating in retrospect, knowing that his defiant attitude and his genuine personality wouldn't allow to take on a fake persona in order to fit into the Tonight Show, ultimately triggering the NBC debacle, and especially because of that Conan should be respected as not only an incredibly gifted Late Night Host , but also as the humble and honest human being that he is

Conan had a great team since '93 at Late Night (as evidenced by the team photo at the beginning) and you can tell he really appreciated that. He took them all to the Tonight show and when he got let go by NBC in '10 he took care of them (probably negotiated into his severance package, although I wouldn't put it past him to do it out-of-pocket) and then brought them all to TBS when legally allowed to start working again. Team Coco deserves a shout-out. Not just all the ones that made it on camera over the years, but the many behind the scenes folks. Conan has always sung their praises every step of the way. Very good and decent people.

At 5.15 hearing Coan thank Jeff Zucker, who in the space of one year from when this was broadcast would be giving Conan no choice but to leave the Tonight Show and showed no regard at all for Conan's position. Jeff Zucker created the Tonight Show fiasco in 2010, amazing how things can change in the space of one year. "He's stuck with me and showed an eerie faith in me", well that was not the case in January 2010.

Late Night with Conan O'Brien was the greatest treat I've ever laid my eyes on via the television screen in my life. I used to get genuinely excited on a Friday night as those were usually the best shows...the characters, the bits, the unforgettable moments. The show that created the Walker Texas Ranger meme....they gave us so much! What a shame that nothing lasts forever. NBC used to be a great network all around. It's easy to bash NBC for the executive decisions they made, but as Conan mentions in this speech, NBC did give him a few chances through the first few lean years. I just wish Conan never had the desire to do The Tonight Show. It's a legendary brand because of Johnny Carson, but it's just not the 70's anymore. Nobody needed to fight over The Tonight Show by the 2000s anyway. Especially as we were just on the brink of app-based television as we are now. Timeslots don't matter anymore. The name of your show doesn't really matter anymore. I wish Late Night with Conan could have just stayed as it was. In all reality, I'm a huge Conan fan, but he should have just WAITED. Just a bit more. I know he had that verbal agreement with Jay that he would get the show in 5 years, Jay thought he would be ready to leave, it turned out he wasn't, it got awkward and ugly....Conan should have just lingered on it some more. There was no need to make a timeframe for Conan to become host, as long as it was agreed that the job would become his. Now Conan is stuck on a network that doesn't even have a deal with Hulu. I almost never see Conan anymore because like many, I've abandoned cable tv for app based television, and TBS doesn't play ball. It's a real shame what could have been.

I love Conan even now, but nothing will come close to his 12:35 slot in NYC....not even the 11:35 gig he had in LA for a few months. "In the year 2000" , Max skits, Joel skits, Andy skits, Preparation H Raymond, Artie Kendall the Ghost Crooner, Mr. T Apple Picking, etc., etc. ,etc. I grew up watching Conan. I used to go to sleep early in 5th grade back in 93-94, set my alarm for 12:30 to watch it, and then go back to sleep. When Brian Stack recently left, it was an end of an era.

+Mike Anderson I know what your thinking, 'if it's not broken don't fix it'. Conan was never going to be doing late night forever though. And he was getting some serious interest from Fox to host a 11:35 gig. Conan wanted the Tonight Show and NBC had to act, but unfortunately thanks to Leno the succession did'nt go smoothly.

I still list one of the best moments of my life as watching the 1860s American Baseball bit live.....I can't remember my entire family ever laughing harder together in our lives. The 12:35 NYC show was the same type of must-see ritual for me. When our family would vacation in hotels in the 90s I would often sneak out of bed as a kid back to the living room to watch Conan 12-inches from the screen with the volume way down so my family wouldn't catch me. I don't think I saw my first episode of Conan until 1996 or 1997, but I was hooked right away. Remember when NYC had a blackout and Conan still did his show with no audience? The BEST era was when Comedy Central started reairing episodes the next evening in the mid 2000s, I never missed an episode during that time. Sighhh, that feels like yesterday. I can still remember the CC promos hyping Late Night reruns coming to the network...Conan with the guitar playing for the elderly woman in bed and singing in that sweet high voice of his..."Old lady, go to sle-e-eeeeep"
@TRJ22419878 жыл бұрын
I'll also never forget watching the episode live when Sue Johanson, the elderly tv sex therapist (totally thought she had passed away btw but she hasn't) was on the show to show off sex toys, and the wrestler Big Show Paul Wight was sitting next to her. When she strapped that dildo to her chin and started gobbling like a turkey...OH MY GOD! I can't even remember how old I was at that time, like 15 years old I think, but I remember being in physical pain for that entire interview because I was laughing so hard, absolutely NOBODY could keep it together that night

MarioNotBros It's unfortunate how things worked out between them. To be fair, though, it's not like Conan put Jay's needs ahead of his own when he first accepted NBC's offer to drop Jay in exchange for "The Tonight Show" (rather than going to another network). It's mostly on NBC for later thinking they could keep still keep Jay and Conan. Doing that just hurt both their careers.
@MarioNotBros9 жыл бұрын

I do agree with Dave when it comes to NBC (Jeff Zucker's penchant for horse-switching was just insane), but I disapproved of the way he went after Jay because (1) Conan Was partially responsible as the ratings slide began months before Jay's 10pm show came along, and (2) part of the reason people didn't watch Conan was because they were tuning in to see Letterman explain (and apologize to his wife for) his sex scandal. I was amazed by the restraint Jay showed not going after Dave the way he would have with any other cheating celebrity. So Dave assailing him when it was Jay's turn to be in the public spotlight (I felt) bordered on hypocrisy.

I'm halfway through this. And just realized, by total happenstance, I'm watching this 11 years later, to the day. But I remember watching it live and being entranced the whole time...and definitely tearing up at times. I first watched this iteration of Conan in probably 1996. I was 13 years old. Then watched it right up to the end when I was 26. Not every show of course...but _so many._ It's pretty damn nostalgic to watch this now. It's also pretty awkward when he praises leno. When he said, "It's fine to be funny, but if you have no character none of it is worth a damn." Shit....so true.
@Ward4137 жыл бұрын
Just want to clear up a few things - Conan was doing fine with Ratings all throughout the summer when he first got The Tonight Show. It wasn't until the fall when NBC gave Leno a thirty minute show before Conan. That's when Conan's ratings tanked, the local news was down, and even Leno's new show was getting shitty ratings. Again, Conan was doing fine before this. Also, the deal for Leno to depart the Tonight Show and hand it to Conan was made in 2004. Conan was thinking about heading to a different network - NBC wanted to hang on to him so they promised him the Tonight Show in five or six years; Leno was completely on board with this, or at least pretended to be. You can watch the clip from 2004 here on KZbin where Jay talks about it - he says he's happy to leave his show in five years and give it to Conan. He talks about calling Jerry Seinfeld, who famously left his show when it was it was number one, and they both agreed it's the right thing to do. What Leno ended up doing was hang around like an asshole. If Leno still wanted The Tonight Show, he shouldn't have agreed to the deal in the first place back in 2004. If he simply still wanted to have a show on television, he should have been an adult about it and gone to a different network to competed with Conan and the rest of the late show talk hosts, not hang out in the lobby of NBC waiting for them to give him a show. A radio host even asked Leno if he would take his show back, before NBC had even considered the idea, and Leno was like, "Oh sure I would." So even though he made a gracious speech on his show in 2004 saying he'd be happy to hand his show to Conan because he deserves it, essentially blowing smoke, he admitted he would take it back if NBC offered it. That's fucking gross. Leno has always been a little bitch. Yes, NBC deserves some blame for their indecision and how they handled the whole thing but if Leno was actually the friend to Conan he pretended to be, he would have told NBC he wasn't interested in pushing Conan to 12:05am, let alone taking The Tonight Show back from him. NBC was the drug dealer, Leno was the buyer - they're both complicit.

JayWard413 most of what you said was true, but I wanted to clear up one thing. I don’t think Leno ever agreed to the deal with Conan taking over the Tonight Show. According to him, he was told about it after Conan made the deal with NBC. They told him he was out in five years. My guess is that he was angry and wanted the show back. There was talk he took the 10pm show to hang around at NBC to see if Conan tanked at 1130. Then he could get the show back. That’s what happened. Did he purposely try to sabotage Conan? Who knows, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Leno seems like such a nice guy on camera, but I’ve heard there’s another side to him. A dark side. Howard Stern hates him. So does Rosie O’Donnell. They know him better than most people, so even though everyone thinks Jay is a great guy, there could be another side we never see. If I were him I would have gone to a competing network and kicked nbc’s ass in the ratings, but like the late Bill Hicks said “Jay Leno is a company man until the bitter fucking end.”

Conan should've never left Late Night or NY. Show was never the same moving it to Los Angeles.

He did Late night for long enough. It's a smaller show for a smaller audience and smaller money. He was established enough to move on by this point.

Except his show single handledly changed the landscape of late night, to the point where him leaving it killed it.

Max was the best talk show orchestra leader. So funny and wasn't annoying like Eubanks and Shaffer.

"When I turn on my TV Will you smile and wave at me Telling Oprah who you are?" --Michael Buble, "Hollywood," released the following year in 2010 ...well, I spent a year (okay, that VERY SAME YEAR, 2009-10) training as an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer right there in Los Angeles...and someday (but of course not immediately)...I hope to... ..."Smile and Wave at All of You Telling Conan and Andy (and perhaps Joel (an Emory University alumnus, just like me!!! Go Eagles!!!) and hopefully Max) Who I Am"... ... ;) ;) ;) TEAM COCO FOREVER!!! So long, Jay, David, Jimmy, Seth, Craigs (Kilborn and Ferguson)...but by the same token, Stephen Colbert was, is, and always will be "The Man"... ;$ ;! ;)
