Young people might have heard that Friends is a great show, a legendary show, and they might have even watched some of it on Netflix. But you'd have to have been there to know how it captured the spirit of the late 90s. Watching it on Netflix now maybe doesn't reveal how it was part of the Zeitgeist. It's a different experience watching something in it's original context when it feels cutting edge.

In like late 95 I was at Century City mall I think, and at the food court or whatever it was called, David Schwimmer and Matt LEBlanc came in. I looked across this cafe island and I caught Schwimmer's eye. I looked away, not wanting to disturb, and he looked like he was trying to sense if they were recognized. It is an indelible memory. Ironically, the guy with me and my then boyfriend was friends with Jennifer Aniston. These stories from the mid 90s are so special, and from there I wrote a spec read at WB at the invitation of Kevin Bright.

I'm British, and I think generally a lot of people here tend to mock and tease each other in a way that is totally friendly and affectionate but might seem hostile to people from overseas. I do wonder if it's possible the women in the department store were joking, thinking Lisa was in on the joke and it was good natured banter, not realising how it came across. I think typically people would only act like that with friends, but Lisa was a Friend, so... it's possible!

Conan wasn't on Max at the time. I know, I immediately thought of Conan being the host, but networks are very particular about that sort of thing. Corden was being pushed hard at the time (for some reason). If Conan had a show on Max at the time, he would have hosted the special.
