In my opinion, this music MAKES the movie. John Milius’ story is solid, Arnold is the right actor for the part. James Earl Jones is an absolute treasure, as is Max Von Sydow (there are NO small parts). But Basil Poledouris’ score elevates this movie to another level, and brings the right emotional notes at each scene to make this a treasured classic.

Compare taht to the trashy rap/rock soundtrack of Suicide Squad or some of the modern movies today. Old movie soundtracks mad great movies. As a young man stationed in SouthEast Asia during the Vietnam War, there were periods of time that the base would be closed. During these periods, I had gone over to the base USO station 'to hang out'. I found a complete collection of Robert E. Howard's books..I poured over those books from cover to cover, and the old maps on the inside covers. Come forward to 1982, the exhilaration, joy, and anticipation that welled in me, with the announcement of the "Conan the Barbarian" movie. The magic of Thoth Amon and Thulsa Doom has never faded, and Conan overshadowing the landscape has never stopped!!

Conan soundtrack and movie remain some of the most underrated masterpieces of the age of cinema. They both embody the essence of what a story is, a man carving his own path through the tragedy of the world around him. Could have been a Homeric Epic, but with so few words and its music backdrop, I think cinema is the only way this story could, and should, be told.
