In my opinion, this music MAKES the movie. John Milius’ story is solid, Arnold is the right actor for the part. James Earl Jones is an absolute treasure, as is Max Von Sydow (there are NO small parts). But Basil Poledouris’ score elevates this movie to another level, and brings the right emotional notes at each scene to make this a treasured classic.

Conan soundtrack and movie remain some of the most underrated masterpieces of the age of cinema. They both embody the essence of what a story is, a man carving his own path through the tragedy of the world around him. Could have been a Homeric Epic, but with so few words and its music backdrop, I think cinema is the only way this story could, and should, be told.
