When Conan sees Subotai coming, he laughs because he thinks he's so far gone he's hallucinating, and when he disappears (below the hill) and the music changes, Conan seems to think he was right about imagining it and passes out. Then Subotai really comes over the hill and the music surges. Triumphant!

Since then I have been totally imbued by the character on paper and by the actor AS. I have not seen the movie for many years, but life gives you experiences that make you remember all kinds of moments; with friends, some movie scenes, etc. And when I see a distressing ending coming, this scene comes to mind. I eat my scavengers and laugh at Death at the last moment. But if the beautiful orchestral music plays, then it is not yet our end. Something or someone will pay the bill for us.

I know a lot of people will see this as a "paganized" version of Christ hanging on the cross, but I think what Robert Howard and the directors were going for is the reference to Odin hanging on Yggdrasil here. Also, Polidorius' eerie music is perfect.
@paitrynpait96642 жыл бұрын
Except crucifixion wasn't a Christian thing, it just happened that Christ was crucified. The Romans would have been considered pagan in belief anyways. It was simply a painful and excruciatingly long way to die in antiquity
@kalinystazvoruna87022 жыл бұрын
@@paitrynpait9664 True. There's a whole video on KZbin about crucifixion in antiquity. However, in this instance, I still think Howard and the directors were going for a reference to the Odin story specifically because of the tree. Of course, in the original Odin story, Yggdrasil was a living tree, not a dead one like here. Hmmm.... I wonder if that is also a comment on pagan beliefs vs. Christian ones. The tree being dead referencing pagan beliefs being "dead", as opposed to the original Odin story where the tree is very much alive. Interesting hypothesis. I'll have to do some research on this. Thanks!😀

I don’t see what’s so wrong with believing in multiple gods and goddesses. Humanity created the idea of a higher plane to cope with the burden of death’s embrace. To say someone else’s belief is wrong is the same as saying one’s own belief is also wrong. It is my belief that fantasy is in and of itself a form of religion because it takes one into a world beyond ones own capabilities, a higher plane if you will, but one that we can still recognize and empathize with.
@kalinystazvoruna87022 жыл бұрын
@@liamwilson7549 "To say someone else’s belief is wrong is the same as saying one’s own belief is also wrong." I never even *implied* that believing in multiple gods and goddesses was WRONG. I was simply commenting on Robert Howard's knowledge of "mythology" which he probably used in his writings and the director's choices. If you THINK I was making a disparaging remark on folks' beliefs, then the problem is YOURS, not mine. As the saying goes, don't assume. Furthermore, many folk would immediately assume that the image was in imitation of Christ's crucifixion. (Edited because the asterisk before and after a word to indicate bold, doesn't seem to work properly.)

As told by the Conan Wiki: The scene uses real vultures, including the one that leans over Conan's shoulder to pick at his wounds. They replaced the vulture in between camera switches with a different vulture that was stuffed after it died mysteriously on set, and Arnold bit into the neck of the dead one before spitting it out. Medics stood by after the scene to give Arnold a solution to gargle to prevent his chances of getting sick after biting a dead vulture.

@fozfactor ... Was about to say the same thing. Poledouris should have won an Oscar. As a low budget film and with many errors ( special effects/not much acting) Poledouris music carried the film 50%-50% with Arnold and Earl Jones. If u think about it the whole film is like an Opera. 4 some reason it didn't quite cut it in "The Destroyer" as he changed his tone or instruments despite the triple budget (could have been the directors error though).

See, nowadays when you are getting a tattoo, the ink gun makes that grinding sound for ya. You don’t have to do it yourself like Mako does.

Folks laugh at me when I say Conan the Barbarian is the best movie ever made... for me. It ages well. The music is timeless. And the characters have character.

Senovio Rodriguez - You should read the Conan stories, especially the ones written by his creator, Robert E Howard. They are pure adventure and escapism. Other writers have added to the saga over the years, and some are excellent. If you haven't read any yet, I urge you to do so, you won't regret it.

@@alvindimes4729 Well, read comic books first. Then REH. And others. Unfortunately, most paperbacks in library got sold.

His body and face... understated. Subtle. More with less words. The action, the revenge, the joy and sadness ... the music just takes way over the top to Valhalla.
