What I've been doing with Thomas' excellent introduction in these omnis is read a few issues then flip to the introduction and read the bit that pertains to those issues. It's really interesting to see the backstory afterwards. Roy Thomas really is a treasure!

Hey Omar. Welcome back, happy new year 2020. Another great review and I envy you for reading this material for the first time. From Marvel, the Savage Sword of Conan omnis are still my absolute, mandatory, top of the list purchase of the year (@Mr. Gabriel and folks @Marvel: could I have a special order of 4 hardcovers per year? Please 😉). In addition, I know that there are some copyright issues in regard to publication of REH material in Europe, but I recently purchased the first 8 volumes of Conan Le Cimmerien from Glenat. And man, that is a work of art indeed and maybe could be a perfect companion to the Savage Sword of Conan series. It respects the original material from Howard and enhance all tales. Considering Marvel’s partnership with european artists and authors in the past (i.e. Siver Surfer by Moebius), it could be a great idea for Marvel to take the ownership of publishing that material here in America. For example, Publisher Pipoca e Nanquim from Brazil did a fantastic job on publishing REH Conan The Barbarian in portuguese, with a unique trilogy of books, blessed with Frank Frazetta’s covers and internal illustrations from Mark Shultz and Gary Gianni; with the approval of Frazetta & REH estates, besides Del Rey books approval. If an agreement between Marvel, REH estate and Glenat is possible, what a terrific opportunity would be for readers here to have access to that material.

These Conan omnis are gorgeous. If you like Buscema’s Conan run you HAVE to check out Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant. Fantagraphics is putting out beautiful oversized hardcovers of the entire run. I’ve been collecting the boxed sets and they’re simply essential. Buscema has talked about how big of an influence Foster was on his art and it absolutely shows in page layouts and character framing. Would you ever do overviews of that series?

(I love Conan, but I have to space out reading his comics, because they start to become a bit too same-y if you binge them) Fun stuff. I stopped reading the Conan color comics after Buscema took over for Barry Smith.and switched exclusively to Savage Sword. I didn't like the way his art looked in color but I loved the way the Filipino inkers polished his pencils in the black and white. Howard Chaykin was already a star artist in the 70`s. His work on Cody Starbuck, Iron Wolf and Fafhrd & The Gray Mouser had made him a star. His later work Empire, The Stars My Destination and The Swords Of Heaven/The Flowers Of Hell were some of the first painted American comic art work I ever saw. Richard Corben, Bruce Jones and Grey Morrow were some of the others. I see Vincente Alcazar is listed as a fill in artist. He was an underrated artist who did some solid work in his day.

See here in the video version of "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" (crank volume audio is poor): kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGTcZ56Vq9CSjMk Also Red Sonja is also a Robert E Howatd character. Roy adapted her into a Hyborian Age character to use her in Conan. The original REH character carried a sword, bow AND a pistol. The 70s books from Marvel (1962-1986 R.I.P) were predominantly drawn by mighty John Buscema and the corral of brilliant inkers that made his Conan work shine, are books drawn by men when these books were produced for a hard drinking, hard working, womanizing, working class males.
