Rats are smart and hard to catch with a trap. When we had rats in the garden because of chicken feed, we tried traps. We always caught little garden shrews that are blind and we let them go. The rats never got caught!

A baby rat got into my house in 2010,....I mistook it for a mouse or gerbil,....it was cute and hid under my stove. At night it ate my cat's dry kibble,..just the crumbs,....mostly. Eventually it tried to eat my vegetables sitting out on a counter. Gnawed into a full bag of cat food. It outsmarted my store bought "humane trap",....getting the peanut butter, without triggering the trap door. I called a varmint control company, their trap was also a humane trap. It worked and a day later the baby rat was caught. It took another day before they picked it up, so I kept the trapped baby rat, and fed it carrots, used a jar lid for a water bowl. I talked to it, to keep it calm. It was fairly small, for a rat. I'd never seen a baby rat before.

@@jjhaya The funny thing,...the baby rat, at first, hid among my box of cat toys, which were all mouse-like. I thought I was dreaming when I saw the toys moving around. My cat had no interest in the rat. A well fed house cat is not motivated to hunt them.

I had a pet rat, and I have dealt with invader rats that chew electrical wires to the point of endangering everything I have built. I live in the country, and have other animals, so poison is not an option. If you have ever watched "The Green Mile" I have had one in my house that was so emboldened that I gave in and fed it by hand! LOL! He was my circus mouse, that my cats eventually caught up with. My cats are so lazy they cannot keep up with them. We have barn cats that I think fear some of the rats apparently! LOL!
