What's crazy is Conan started in 93 with basically the same problem But they let him cook and he killed it to where fox offered 30 million for him and NBC was 8 million for the tonight show after he told them foxs offer This time the management were all a bunch of morons who were worried over a transition rating dip Now they have the Seth Myers show and the roots on the other show
@jspres86Ай бұрын
It wasn't really Jay Leno's fault. All he did was he wanted to keep working for NBC. Conan's "Tonight Show" was not doing well in ratings and NBC panicked. Technically what they wanted to do was put Leno's new show in the old time slot and move the Tonight Show back to past midnight. Conan was not happy with that idea and reached a deal where he was paid $45 million to leave the next day. So Leno tends to get a lot of flack he doesn't deserve.
@HaloweeeАй бұрын
@@jspres86nah screw that. Had the roles been reversed Conan would have refused to do anything that hurt a colleague like that.
@jspres86Ай бұрын
@@Haloweee Conan used Leno as a pawn as much as NBC did. To NBC, he was a safety blanket. To Conan, he was a way to exploit a network out of millions. Had Jay left the network (as Dave said he should've) there's no established face to take over the show. Conan can't negotiate $45 million to leave. At some point, NBC lets him go, he loses his staff because he can't pay them and he can't finagle a deal with TBS. At which point, Conan drops off the face of the earth.

They chose a song by Cheap Trick in part because that would be a "private joke" for the Late Night with Conan O'Brien fans, because over the years Conan used Cheap Trick as the butt of jokes and snarky comments. When this originally aired, I laughed out loud when I recognized one of their hit songs was playing on the bathroom radio. When Conan turned it off, I thought "A: because it's Cheap Trick; and B: that's the maximum length of a song they can play on TV without having to pay copyright fees. Just enough to make the joke. After all those jokes, digs and jabs over the years, Cheap Trick would never grant permission for Conan to play one of their songs on TV." But then the whole song starts to play in its full glory as Conan runs across the US... And I'm laughing out loud again! Kudos to Cheap Trick - they really are good sports!

@thebenforever No. The “Tonight Show” was THE ultimate late night gig so Conan wanting to be its host made lots of sense. It meant more money. It meant a better time slot. It meant a larger audience. It meant more exposure. It meant more A list guests. It probably would have been Conan's last job until he decided to retire. It's not like having the Tonight Show long-term would have kept him from passing the reins and turning to his podcast. There's a parallel universe out there where he has a nice 15-year run leaving his mark on the Tonight Show legacy and then has the same realization that the format is done and moves to podcasting.

The victorian doll museum bit was hilarious. I thought I'd never seen this, but I remembered that part for some reason!

As the #1 Conan fan since 2004, and in the name of the fine people of our beloved Conanation, I demand that you guys upload every single monologue (or even episode) from every show Coco hosted from day one 😄

I watched this live on TV the night it aired. It was such a monumental moment in TV history for me, which none of us could tell was going to be so short-lived.

I like to imagine this is him showing us how much he will push himself / do anything for the audience as a Host of the Tonight Show. Plus, I'm hoping he listened to this song growing up and always envisioned himself stepping on stage to that CheapTrick song.

This was just magical and the lengths they went to produce this are impressive. Conan is one of a kind.
