Met and served Conan, his wife and his boy at a bar I worked at a hotel in London. We got plenty of celebrities through, but none really struck me the way Conan did, I grew up watching his show. He noticed that I was kind of lost for words and I told him how much I adored him and his work. He couldn't have been sweeter, despite being with his family just enjoying dinner and a few drinks, yet both him and his wife were so warm and friendly. Felt like he was more interested in me than I was in him, which was really unexpected. Conan deserves all the flowers. Truly a man of the people.

I love stories like this. Years ago I worked in PR and heard stories from limo drivers (who I knew really well as we were constantly booking cars for celebs to go to junkets, premieres, awards shows, etc). Word has it, George Clooney was notorious for bringing a plate of food out to his drivers when he was at premieres/parties knowing they had to wait for him until he was ready to leave. Never broadcasted it or was filmed doing it, that is good karma man.

Both Conan and his good friend and former head writer Robert Smigel have talked about how they wanted to try their best to do "evergreen" comedy. Most comedy has a shelf life, and if you're doing topical humor, that shelf life is even shorter. But Conan's remotes are still as funny now as they were 20 years ago. Conan playing old-timey baseball, or Conan going to the Lincoln museum, those will still be funny 20 years from now. I mean no disrespect to either Seth Meyers or Stephen Colbert, I think they have wonderful writers and they're great performers, but there's little to no reason to go back and watch their late night clips even a week later.

Honestly it's been one of my life's unexpected little pleasures to have grown up alongside Conan's career and see him go from "that weird red haired guy on at 12:35" to being rightfully acknowledged as one of the best who ever did it, and one of the few genuinely good people in TV. The couple of weeks around "I'm with Coco" were one of the most heartwarming things I've ever experienced, all the fans turning something sad into something positive and fun.

I’ve been a Conan fan for a couple decades now. He deserved the tonight show. But I’m so happy for him and his staff and his family. He really proved who he was during that time. And in my opinion, he will go down with Dave as the greatest of all time. ❤
@TonyNguyen-uc9mh7 ай бұрын
@Ktcsr17 Conan was not very cooperative during his time as "The Tonight Show" host. For example, he assured all the NBC executives that he'd tailor his material to the 11:35pm audience, then admitted he had no intention of changing a thing. He was also reluctant to take their suggestions. They wanted him to go into the audience more, which he did for a while...and then skipped it. The network thought he should have the biggest stars early in his run to attract the new 11:35pm audience, but by week 2 he booked his favorite, Norm MacDonald. A funny guy to be sure, but Norm's was more of a niche appeal. When the ratings were dropping, NBC wanted him to book Sarah Palin to get a ratings boost. Conan refused. He was afraid Dave Letterman wouldn't like that. Conan's getting crushed in the ratings. The network that made his dream of hosting "TTS" come true is losing money, and he won't book a hot guest because he's afraid to offend his biggest competitor. Every talk show host had a time slot guarantee written into their contract- except Conan. If he hadn't neglected to get this, the network would not have been able to insist he move to 12:05am. At the time he signed the deal with NBC to drop Jay at the end of his contract so he could take over "The Tonight Show," Conan was getting huge offers from ABC and FOX to do a show of his own at that earlier hour. The FOX offer came with a salary that was almost double what NBC was going to pay him to wait 5 years. If he'd gone to one of those competing networks when they were so anxious to have him, nobody would've had to lose their job over it, and "The Tonight Show" debacle could've been averted.

We kinda wanna see the standing ovation Jimmy...
@kstepko7 ай бұрын
Yeah … that’s some very intentional editing there.
@ThamiumOne7 ай бұрын
@@kstepko- Well, true - it is intentional, but you might be assuming the wrong reason. If you go play the start of almost all of these KZbin guest clips from the show, you'll start to notice Jimmy's introductions are usually edited out and the guests are already sitting down or about to. One of the main reasons is that NBC is trying to avoid needing to pay music royalty fees for whatever song the band is playing when the guests walk out. They already have to cover that once when the show is broadcast, so by cutting it out here, they avoid having to do it twice. Plus it gets around any music copyright flags KZbin itself might flag the video with. *Note added: This seems to be unique just to Tonight Show guests clips, because it's not done by NBC on clips from Seth Meyers, and the other networks don't seem to do it for Jimmy Kimmel, or Stephen Colbert clips either. Maybe something in the contracts with Jimmy Fallon or the Roots band(?)*

Yeah, that's a shame. It's probably a copyright or policy thing. Certainly exceptions can be made. Conan returning to the Tonight Show as a guest after the notorious falling out and getting a standing ovation is kind of a great television moment, wouldn't you think? Worthy of an exception.
