Paul, it amazes me that these jurisdictions that don't allow hollow-point ammunition are so UNINFORMED. Time and time again I see Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ammunition go clear through long ballistic gel blocks where hollow-point ammunition does not. Clearly FJM poses the greatest danger to those in the immediate and intermediate area of a shooting incident. It amazes me that these local jurisdictions are more concerned with the life of the perpetrator than they are with the lives of the innocent by-standers. And thanks for another very interesting and informative article. Peace, love and happiness to you, your family and crew.

Good information, Paul. I recently bought my first 9mm EDC. I've always carried a 5 shot .44 Spcl loaded with handloads and 215 gr lead SWC. My confidence level was high with accuracy and stopping power. Wasn't pleased with having to go with a small bore handgun for defense but I guess I'm at that age now. Anyway, I was glad to see this video since I am carrying FMJ. Haven't invested in a megabucks box of defensive ammo yet, but at least I can hit my target with the FMJ well enough to eat the center out of the bullseye at 15 yd.

Excellent informative video as always, Thanks Paul. One not so quick note here for anyone who is interested. Always make sure your intended ammo will work in each specific pistol you plan to use it in. Never assume "It worked fine in my other pistol" means it will work in all your pistols. Or any other firearm for that matter. Case in point: I just bought a Springfield Armory XDs .45 mod 2. For this story the Glock G41 Gen 4 is the Glock in question. I use Walmart's bargain basement Federal "Champion" 320 grain FMJ aluminum case ammo in my Glock, without issue. I expected to use it in my XDs without issue as well, but to my amazement the Federal ammo dropped nearly a foot and a half in 30 feet when fired from the XDs. Yes I said a foot and a half, 18 inches drop in 30 feet. I honestly thought something was broken in the new gun, but the gun is actually fine. I switched to Fiocchi then fired my 5 test rounds, and hit approximately 2 inches low at 30 feet. Using Magtech I put 2 of the 5 test rounds fired into the bullseye. I am still experimenting. Other ammunition brands and types will follow, but I will not bore you all with that. This is a true apples to apples comparison between ammunition, but in two very different guns. All the rounds fired were 230 grain FMJ round nosed ball ammunition, no weight differences, no projectile shape differences, etc. as I said apples to apples. With very startling different results. I am not bad mouthing any manufacturer here, just the opposite, it is entirely the guns that make the difference. My Glock put 7 out of 13 in the bullseye and a 4" grouping at 30 feet with the same Federal ammo as proof of this not being bad ammo. The point of this story is to underscore that you must always test your actual pistol, with the actual ammunition you intend to use. If you want to know you are good to go, when you have to be, test with your actual exact combination or you may find you have a real problem at the worst possible time. Any way if you read all that, I wish you well and I hope the story is helpful. Thanks again Paul for all the hard work, it is appreciated.
@jwash3rd4 жыл бұрын
That's odd, you should contact Springfield about that. I had/have the XDS .45 in both the 3.3 and 4.0 and both of them were/are equally accurate with all of the ammo that I've used.

Thanks Paul, great info as expected from you. This one was especially good to see: It validated test results which used of my own version of your meat target. I used your method to test the Underwood Extreme Defender in both 9x19 and 380 ACP. Based on the success of my tests I have been carrying this ammo for the past year. Your test gives me even more confidence in my choice of carry ammo (that included very good results even when fired from my smallest carry gun, a Ruger LCP). I also tested point of impact in my two usual carry guns and they were pretty much true to my point of aim, as they were with my old Federal HST HP rounds (7 and 15 yard distances). I was very pleased with that. Recoil seems softer with the lighter Underwood rounds even though they have much higher velocities. The meat target tells a more, real world story than ballistic gel. You designed an excellent testing media!! Tony

The Underwood Xtreme Defender, is the best ammo made out of any type of ammo. I have lots of Federal Premium HST rounds, Speer Gold Dot rounds, and Hornady Critical Duty rounds. Carried and trained with that ammo for a very long time. And then, I came across the 2016/2017 joint agency ballistics test. Multiple calibers, barrel lengths and test mediums were used. The Lehigh Defense/Underwood Xtreme Defender was the only bullet to score perfectly in every caliber, in every barrel length, in every test medium, and with every agency. And in ballistics gel and animal cadavers, the primary wound channel was larger than any other primary wound channel with fully expanded hollow points or even any other ammo.

@sporkstar19114 жыл бұрын
They are Supercavitating bullets, but theyve been nerfed to avoid piercing soft body armor like the old designs from the 70s would. Those were shaped a little like a ball point pen, and cause ALOT of internal damage. Look up "THV" ammo. I expect the real purpose of the xtreme penetrators was to use the fluid channel disruption like a set of fins on an arrow to resist yawing so the bullet pierces deeper into meat. The fins arent sharp either, so they dont help with kevlar penetration.

For those not familiar, the Xtreme defense are a bullet type commonly known as XTP, or Extreme Terminal Performance ammunition. Some have the cross-point tip, while others resemeble JHP rounds. Happy to see this comparison for 9 mm, but would really like to see something similar with mouse guns. The advice you often see with calibers like .32 ACP is to forget about hollow points and stick with FMJ. You can find results with ballistic test gelatin, but it would be nice to see how this works with the meat target. Would the damage with either kind of round be pretty much equivalent, given that you probably won't get much expansion with the hollow point rounds? I use .32 ACP as an example simply because a KelTec P32 is pretty close to invisible as a concealed carry gun.

Another good video, thanks. Being forced to reside in the Socialist Sanctuary State of New Jersey (Grandkids) once I retired from LE I was no longer allowed to carry hollow point ammunition (???) . The best alternatives so far have been Hornadys Critical Defense & Critical Duty ammunition as well as Federals Guard Dog. All give excellent expansion and performance. All have functioned flawlessly in 9mm, .40 and .45 in a variety of handguns.

We're all watching and taking notes on his choice of attire. He said in the shooting jacket video that he typically wears the same thing every day which is kind of surprising but refreshing at the same time. It's plain attire too and nothing out of the ordinary that would unnecessarily draw attention to himself in public--he's consciously or unconsciously following the Gray Man philosophy...

My experiences as an LEO and speciality bullet inventor is that if Hollow Point Point Handgun ammunition is prohibited. For Handguns if Hollow Pointed Bullets are illegal. Then in general the best choices for Self Defense Anti Perp ammunition is the Round Flat Nose Bullet (RFN) or Flat Nose Bullets designs like Wadcutters etc. In either Lead or FMJ or a Solid Metal. It beehoves each person to check all applicable laws on which Ammunition types are legal in the areas they live and travel to.

Thank you for the informative video. In my socialistic area, the local commissar(prosecutor) will charge you with some form of homicide even if it is a justified shooting, just for using any projectile other than FMJ. The reasoning: if you use non standard ammunition it is because you intend to kill your assailant instead of just wounding. I know, that really sounds crappy, but, like you say in your video, local municipalities have their own laws...

@@oldcop18 im calling the people that write laws that ban "scary" bullets and demand you use _the worst possible ammo_ assholes. And any law enforcement that arrest people for defending themselves with the "wrong" type of bullet are authoritarian, especially since the odds are good the cops (read jackbooted assholes) are using the same "bad" bullets to defend themselves. If its legal for them, it should be legal for everyone. . . any other "rules for thee but not for me" nonesense leads to thugish attitudes that make them feel above the laws they enforce.

Let me see -Montana? Oh yeah, what laws? I've tried the Underwood 65gr loads in 357 SIG. They chrono a little over 2000 fps out of my Glock 31C. The porting takes off about 50fps. I've only shot them at cardboard backed paper targets. The interesting thing is they leave large 4 leaf clover holes in the target.

The FBI's opinion of the Over-Penetration Debate is that it doesn't matter. Their statistics show that in shootings (mostly by law enforcement) only about 20% (if memory serves) of rounds fired actually hit the assailant. The rest miss and go past the assailant. So you are FAR more likely to just miss and hit a bystander, than for a bullet to overpenetrate and hit a bystander. Also, bullets lose nearly all of their energy after passing through a person. So if they did hit a bystander, it wouldn't injure them very much. But if you miss, you hit them with a full powered round. AND again, if you do happen to shoot someone, the likelihood of a round over-penetrating and actually hitting someone, are astronomically low (along with the chances you will ever need to shoot someone at all). So again, it statistically doesn't matter. So if for some reason you need to shoot a baddie who happens to be in front of an orphanage... maybe just, try not to shoot. Try to get another angle on him, as you would in a cross-fire situation. Otherwise, if you need to shoot someone, then it's automatically assumed that the likelihood of him killing someone if you dont shoot, is WAAAAAAAY higher than the chance that you accidentally shoot a bystander.

Hello Paul - The Underwood Extreme Defender surely gets my vote in all handgun cartridges. Another Underwood cartridge that IMO is outstanding is their Hard Cast Full wadcutter which is loaded to ~ 1,000 FPS in most calibers.

" Guard Dog " was originally known as EFMJ ( Expanding Full Metal Jacket) before Federal rebranded it . While not as good as premium JHP , it's not bad , and the fmj like feeding gives it a useful niche .
