greg. I just bought my Jeep built a hoist very similar to yours. The one thing I did differently was made my vertical pullys perpendicular to the garage door. This was easier bc it allowed for less angled support builds. I simply used the horizontal pullys to angle enough so they allowed enough room to the hoist. Very nice job. Well done.

You don't have to be rich, you only have to have a crawl space above your garage. I did a very similar lift, except I don't have a crawl space. I purchased a house from Amazon/ harbor freight for $90 wood pulls for $15 (Lowes) and became a man for two hours. And it works greay. Just shows you don't have to empty every pocket. Will be making a video soon of another way without a crawl space. However Sir you did a good job. Love it.

I just bought a home and a Jeep JL (2dr) to go with it. I wasn't aware the previous owner had built your lift into the garage ceiling until he demonstrated it at the final inspection. Nice surprise. But he had a JLU (4dr). It looks like the top of the JLU is a little shorter where you sling the straps through on each side. I wonder if anyone has tried this with a 2Dr top? Or any idea if the slightly longer roof-line will be a problem? Note: I realize the full length of the top on the 4dr extends over the back seats but it looks like the distance between the rear hatch and the "pillar" & the side window is longer on the 2dr top.

Cool idea. To simplify, would this same idea work with one center lift instead of 4?
@gregwessels48667 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Yes - I think you could certainly make this work with 1 center point. I avoided the single point lift because of these reasons: You will not be able to get the jeep top as close to the ceiling (if you have a high ceiling this might not matter). Also, you will have to figure out a harness for the top to keep it balanced. I would definitely recommend secondary safety straps (in any scenario) - with a center point you will have all the weight on a single hook and also a single point of failure.

Absolutely great job! This is by far the best system I have seen out there, as this set up does not allow for the top to move around that much compared to others I have seen posted. Currently working on my setup right now. 2 questions, how were you able to get all cable lift points the same length, and did you have to add additional wiring for the controller? Bought what looks like the same hoist from Harbor Freight, but the controller length is only 6'. Have my hoist mounted about 2'-3' above ceiling, which will leave me with about 3'-4' from a 12' ceiling. Cables and security eyelets are the only thing left. Taking a day off work today to get that done. Thanks in advance for your posting/video and help the same hoist from Harbor Freight, but the controller length is only 6'. @gregwessels48669 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill! For the wire lengths, I 'rough' installed them by cutting each wire longer than I needed (couple feet). I ran the hoist to its max position (the stopper should trip the motor). I put a thimble on one end of the wire, hooked it to hoist, ran through the pulleys and marked the exact length with black tape - then cut with a couple feet of slack. I marked the spot where when the wire was saddled, the cut end wrapped back could not extend past. I repeated for all four, then ran the hoist to drop the wires down into the garage. I put a thimble on one and then measured from the ceiling for the rest, ensuring the saddled end didn't extend past the tape. Pull the wire taught, when you measure...either by hand or with a weight. Fortunately, with my hoist the supplied cable length with the controller was sufficient... but another reader said he found replacement wire at Lowes and ran the controller into a cabinet so even that is concealed...pretty cool.

Great job. I looked at all the retail Jeep top lifts and didn't like any of them. I bought a hoist and was looking online for ideas and found your project. Excellent work. I like your straps that use to run through the top. What straps are they?. Looks like they have eyelets on both ends.
@gregwessels48669 жыл бұрын
+JAWSnAZ Thanks for checking it out. If you click on the link to the website there is a list of materials I used...the straps are Stren-Flex, 2-ply 1inch wide, 5 feet long. I had to look around quite a bit for the 5 footers - I originally had 4 foot (too short), and 6 foot (too long). Here are the equivalent straps on Amazon: www.amazon.com/EET2-901-5-Twisted-Vertical-Capacity-Length/dp/B00AIUVBHS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1447963512&sr=8-1&keywords=stren-flex+5+foot
