@Derek Elliott, being a fairly novice Blender user, and knowing this is my passion and dream, my mind always goes bland when Blender is fired up. After watching this tutorial and taking in all the incredible advice and tips you provide, I no longer am afraid of the way I approach a design. I use to beat myself up and criticize myself about, what I would call "poor modeling techniques", but man do you have a way to bump up that stoke level. Thanks for your amazing tutorials!!

I'm not even 20min in yet and already I am learning so much. I am an artist/information systems tech and I figured I know how to sculpt, know proportions like a lion knows fear and...oh my bad got carried away. Anyway this is by far the best video for GD I have come across. A video that actually explains what is a quick and less elaborate way of doing things. sheesh. I just decided to give blender a go years after I was told about it and I would want to do a 3D character. Most "tutorials" are actually speed builds. You can imagine the frustration.

On the tread part: a nice trick is to use Alt+D to duplicate your object to work on it somewhere else. Then, once you're finished you can just delete the duplicate and you don't need to re-position it. Thanks for making this tutorial, there's not a lot of good shoe tutorials out there for Blender.

Hi Derek, first of all thanks a lot for the detailed insights into your workflow. I'm making a shoe right now and this has been a tremendous asset. Easily one of the best modeling videos I've watched. One question, and forgive me if you actually answered it in the video, I skipped around quite a bit: At which point would you make the shoe asymmetrical? and by which method? do you use a lattice? proportional editing? that's ought to get messy right? I've noticed that if you show it from certain angles, you don't actually notice the symmetry. So do people just leave them symmetrical? I'd love some tips! and thanks so much again, making this shoe has been the most fun thing I've done in blender for months!
@DerekElliott3 жыл бұрын
Really whenever you want. I would model most of the shoe with the mirror modifier on and then as soon as you want to make changes to the other side just apply the mirror modifier and make the adjustments different there
