C2 have stated (quietly) that there's no eccentric, just concentric. That really does mean it is fundamentally flawed.

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. No Eccentric....
@petercoles82742 ай бұрын
Your observation about the lack of eccentric tension is super useful and highly valid John, and rather rules it out for me. But you missed one feature that your dyna doesn't have, namely the ability to completely bypass the monitor and connect directly to the ergdata app. Concept2 will be selling the strength trainer at a lower price without the monitor and, based on your dyna experience, this will not only save money, but also avoid the need to bring your own elastic bands.
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
Yeah, and to be honest, I hardly ever turn the monitor on with the DYNO anyway. I've got it set to maximum air - and I just push and pull with all my might. It doesn't matter what I see on screen - when I'm done, I'm done!! It could say "You have pushed 150kg" or "You have pushed 300 bananas" - it doesn't matter. All that matters is the workout.

@@rowalong I think the PM5 connectivity is actually a motivator for me. If I can connect this equipment to the C2 world, logbooks and 3rd party apps, I’d find that super exciting! So for me, PM5 compatibility is really important.
@jonhall98892 ай бұрын
Think the difference is $150 between models where PM5 is and is not equipped. Would be intetested to see them put out a RowErg variant that was $150 less that relied on phone/ErgData connection for those who struggle with C2 RowErg price.
@kopraljono39232 ай бұрын
It's obvious from the demo video, but it's worth noting that you can still brace on the row, just that with the StrengthErg it's with your feet rather than your upper body. Also, there's good points about the downside of no eccentric resistance, but I also don't quite agree with all the comments saying that dumbbells can substitute. What type of leg press can you do with dumbbells? I doubt most people have heavy enough dumbbells that match the potential resistance of the seated pull (or all three lifts for that matter). It's definitely true that this isn't a be all and end all device for strength training, but I think people are undervaluing what it does offer, and a relatively small footprint for home gym equipment. Also, it's isokinetic resistance. Again, it's not the be all and end all for resistance training, but it does have positive aspects and is something that this device is offering. Being safe and good for rehab/ageing population is one, but everyone can benefit from it as well.
@sillothian46182 ай бұрын
From watching the Dark Horse Rowing video the staff at Concept2 all seemed to emphasise that the StrengthErg was a tool to help maintain strength as you get older and/or less mobile. A lot easier to handle than free weights and more compact than a cable system but the lack of eccentric resistance means it isn’t really the tool for body builders. Still it looks like a great bit of kit that will complement their other machines, especially the RowErg.
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it’s not like the lack of eccentric makes this machine useless. But it’s still an important consideration.
@richardmather190624 күн бұрын
There is a lot of space between elderly people rehabbing and "body builders." A lot of us just train to be strong and fit. And this thing is just not that good for the goal. Barbells, dumbells, plates and racks are so much more versatile. But if compact form factor is important, a decent functional trainer would still be more useful than this thing.
@ked48642 ай бұрын
I have a TotalGym which rounds out a strength workout with a fluid motion rather nicely. There is a KZbin Channel, "Hybrid Resistance," where the guy has taken the workouts on the TG to the next level of strength training (vs. the marketing videos which are all about weight loss). If this weren't so expensive, I'd consider adding the StrengthErg to my home gym, but I"m not sure...we'll have to wait and see what happens when it comes out.

I wonder why did they overlook the eccentric part? Could they still improve this before release?
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
I think because it’s based on the physics of a standard concept2 rowing machine - there isn’t really a way to get the eccentric in there. They said in their video releases that they knew this wasn’t going to be on offer.
@robertfontaine36502 ай бұрын
The lack of flexibility of the tool seems a bit limiting. A set of dumb bells seem like a better investment but maybe they will come up with some more ideas before release.
@pedestrianfare81752 ай бұрын
That was interesting. BTW, also good to hear somebody pronounce the K sound in eccentric. All my trainers have said "eccentric".
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
Oh, as in a hard E and then “sentric”? Maybe I’m the one getting it wrong? 😑
@jonhall98892 ай бұрын
If this was designed so that it could be a superset of the RowErg, that is, have a mode that is identical to how rowing works (maybe even a dynamic mode) then this could be interesting as a ++ version. As it is, the lack of eccentric seems critical, but I’ll see what C2 adds/changes in the final design. I think the most interesting element is the ability to forego the PM5 and just use one’s own device for recording. Curious if that would lack anything the PM5 could do that the app could not.
@user-wc1em7pc2p2 ай бұрын
It would have been ideal to have an overhead press and pull down included.
@DHTCF2 ай бұрын
More important for me than the lack of eccentric tension, is the lack of any pulling exercise with the legs. Seems a recipe for underdeveloped hamstrings. Solve that and I'd be up for one.

I don't get you guys who are minimizing the issue lack of eccentric. Strength is more than the ability to generate force in one direction. You pick up something heavy, you have to be able put it down someplace as well.

I was hoping C2 would make an assault style bike. Maybe the Rogue Echo has established too much dominance to try to compete against. I have all 3 c2 machines and am intrigued by this machine but it looks far too weak to challenge me. On the promo video the woman is leg pressing with barely any effort on level 7 which concerns me. I just don’t see it being in any way comparable to heavy leg presses, bench and barbell rows. Maybe their target market is geriatrics and people with poor mobility.
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
Much like the Row/Ski/Bike - the resistance the user gets out of it is very much reliant on the amount of power they put in. Like my DYNO - I can make it move easily by just easing into it - and the monitor will show 20kg on screen. But with the same settings, I can really mash my legs into it - and get 160kg of resistance. So I wouldn't worry about that side of things. I doubt they'll ever release an assault bike though. They had the chance when they designed the bikeErg. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong though!!

My husband is older and this will be perfect for him. I don't know much about strength training but I'm not setting up a big machine in the garage that I won't use. But this new strengtherg seems perfect with its small footprint and I'll be buying one when it comes out. The real issue....I was going to buy a bike as my next piece...but since my husband will use this too - looks like it trumps the bike. Maybe I'll come into some more money and get both, lol.

Olympic lifters manage to get strong without an eccentric phase... Arguably concentric only makes the exercise easier to recover from making it possible to increase the volume with less risk of over-training.

@UniversalStand2 ай бұрын
That would simply give you a different exercise. You’d switch from a push to a pull. The eccentric portion is passive.

I wonder why they didn’t fit an “eccentric “ type fly wheel?
@kmo_16122 ай бұрын
I think the eccentric movement outweighing the concentric movement is a bit of an unproven myth. The concentric movement is the one that gets the bulk of the weight off the ground through strength, and it'll improve your overall strength whether there's little or no eccentric. Perhaps doing more will compensate. The new model looks fantastic, and coupled with a set of decent dummbells, it'll be almost like having a complete gym.
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
Although I’d agree that gains can still be made without eccentric - it’s been proven over and over that it’s about time under tension - and by including eccentric, slow releases of the lift, gains will happen quicker. No myth.
@DaveNeveАй бұрын
I've never seen a Dyno in my life and I doubt I'll ever come across the StrengthErg. Without eccentric resistance, it just can't compete with other machines or even weights.
@elizabethbrignoni74482 ай бұрын
Oh wow looks very interesting. I couldn’t have one as you have limited space. It sure would help with strengthening legs n arms with the lack of pushing on return so you’re right. Yeah. It’s a point of some discussion. And it’s not like the don’t raise it themselves - but it would be nicer if it had eccentric.
@VisualizationCreation-uc7jf2 ай бұрын
People love sled pushes and pulls, these are all concentric moves and loved on a sled because it causes less soreness, right? And every machine C2 has, does not have eccentric and people love rowing but rowing always hailed as full body also has no eccentric… people seem to have a double standard in wanting eccentric suddenly but they love sleds and gettting strong on rowers?? I do agree about eccentric. Olympic lifting for 1 rep maxes and taking big breaks makes really powerful individuals.
@rowalong2 ай бұрын
And that's why I said that if you're looking at this machine as a way to improve rowing, it's perfect. But if you're looking at this as something for all round strength increases, then it's not as perfect. It's still a good machine - but the lack of eccentric is going to mean slower gains.
