Thank you again for sharing the adventures of the Concertgebouw on KZbin. I first discovered you during the Covid "live" broadcasts of the Mahler symphonies. Very recent historically, but your orchestra and the magic of that wonderful hall quickly became one of my very favorites!! Thanks from Wisconsin, USA.

This guy looks like 17, I will be looking forward to his work with the orchestra. No greater compliment than getting recognition from your peers.

Having gotten to know Makela's work over the last two years through KZbin performances, both with the Oslo Philharmonic and the Orchestra de Paris, as well as a couple of concerts leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra, this doesn't surprise me in the least. Musicians love to play with him. The Orchestra de Paris hired him following a unanimous vote of the musicians. That he would eventually lead one of the premiere orchestras of the world makes good sense and I'm happy for music lovers everywhere.

It is such a good thing that Klaus has come into the Concertgebouw. I hope that he will record all Sibelius' symphonies with this Orchestra sometime, despite of having recorded them already with the Oslo Orchestra.... It is high time!!

How does a conductor's relationship grow with his orchestra, if he doesn't commit to one? Is Europe lacking "conductorial" talent? Or perhaps being in charge of several orchestras is normal, I don't know.

It’s normal to hold various posts, and there are really not so many on the international stage who are so humble and competent.

What does a "chief conductor" do anyway? Like, is this a position for life? Will he not conduct other orchestras now? But congratulations to him, of course.

I don't know much about the details, but I think the contract usually go by a certain years. And chief conductors are usually invited by other orchestras as guests, too.
@thehonkytonkduck2270

A chief conductor is kind of the manager of the orchestra: usually they are also the artistic director, so they present what is the program for that year and who is doing it even if they're not conducting. They also deal with where tours are going and they hire and lay off musicians of the orchestra to make the orchestra better (in both sound and chemistry). They basically are there to make the orchestra sound good and pick repertoire, and to conduct quite a few performances, along with a bunch of other things. It is not a position for life by any means and it goes by contract (so they are chief conductor until the contract ends and they decide not to extend it) and they still do performances with other orchestras.

Bad move. His recent recordings of the Sibelius Symphonies are very poor. He is too inexperienced although I think he is talented and has a future but not in this sort of position.
