While your experience as an event organizer does reveal much more nuance in the Dashcon story, I feel your aim to try and be super good-faith towards the event organizers drifted a little into willful ignorance. Under no circumstance should the organizers have *lied* about how much money they had _or_ should they have pocketed so much money when they still owed the hotel.

Well, I run conventions for a living. I know for a fact that first-year conventions can make you lose tons of money. Heck, I had just started a brand new first-year convention and lost a bunch of money (planned), for the event, hoping for it to grow into a profit soon. I hear people wanting to run their own show all the time, and they have hopes of turning a profit right away. So I'm very sympathetic towards people being in over their heads. Of course, I can't know anyone's intentions, but I know it could just as easily be incompetence over maliciousness.

15:17 a neat little story on the internet thing. While I haven't worked for a convention or hotel, I have been a part of the network infrastructure team on 2 fairly big sporting events. These were part of our university course projects for network engineering, because the venue had a deal with our university. On the second year I was in it, we (about 5 people) were the main team doing all the work before, during, and after the event. Because it's a sporting event, there are a bunch of reporters and TV stations present, who all need internet. The only thing we charged money for was full gigabit LAN connections, because the work involved was like 2 commands total, which almost nobody bought, because our free wireless option was so good that everyone could use it without problems. In a hotel or convention center there is a whole lot more work involved on the infrastructure side, so I guess they can just squeeze as much money for every minor thing possible.
@chelzorthedestroyer5 ай бұрын
Ok, but man. Some places charge $25,000 for each ethernet connection (no routers allowed). Respectfully, that's a bit much. (I get charged around $500 for each and it's still so much. You bring 100 computers, you pay $50,000 to plug them in if you don't have a work around).

That clearly should show any half smart person that you should have the money needed without earning any money from the convention

Found the original name for DashCon: Tumbl-Con USA. I am fascinated by differences between European and American conventions. I live in Poland, we do conventions located in schools, people sleep on the floor of classrooms, main point of convention are talks, lectures, rpg sessions and short chamber larps made by attendees for attendees. Meetings with large authors or merchandise is an afterthought. Alternatively, our cons happen entirely outdoors, people sleep in tents. Its similar in Germany, France, Nordic countries. It's more close-knit, focused on the attendees, hippy-like. Meanwhile, American cons look very commercial, focused on consumption. Obviously there are larger cons that are more similar to American ones, like Pyrcon. But mostly, we do events of 100-400 people with very loose structure and with expectation attendees are also creators of the event. You're an organiser of American cons, have you seen smaller, more exclusive, less polished cons like I described? I would love to hear some more about your scene and how it differs from European scene
