I see one hypothetical scenario for it to be a success: Let's say they took all the criticism to heart. It comes back free to play. Some people will try it of course because it is well known due to its legendary failure and because it is free to play now, the barrier to entry is low. Now let's assume they improved massively. As I said above they took the criticisms and reworked the game to address all of those. Some (you can't please everyone after all) of the players who just tried it for the memes actually enjoy it and word gets around that Concord is not bad anymore, maybe good even. Everyone has heard of Concord and people will wanna see for themselves and try it, many people (again, probably not all) will stick with it and the game is a success now. Of course this will only work if 1) they actually improved the game to bring it up to par with other hero shooters. I don't even think they need to make it stand out really, just the notoriety of Concord might be enough to set it apart from the masses. But it absolutely can't be worse than your average hero shooter. And 2) It has to be free to play so that anyone is actually willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and try it despite the bad PR from the first time around.

To my knowledge it was always the plan for it to come back. Their letter sounded like they were taking it down temporarily to work on it and make improvements like what multiversus did. But obviously it was funny to clown on it’s almost instant demise so it seems that was mostly ignored

Exactly. It very much sounded in that open letter like they were just taking it down temporarly so that they could adjust or "fix" it. However, according the the YT-rumor mill and some articles online the team over at Firewalk Studios had apprently managed to delude themselves into thinking they had created the best game since the invention of the dice so it probably will be difficult for them to improve on anything. In their minds it is already perfect.

The only way Concord is going to get any playerbase is if they make it free to play. The biggest problem with the game is that it released for $40 in an incredibly oversaturated market of hero shooters where games are almost always free to play. The only hope it has involves making the game free to play.
