Concord's Fate Has Seemingly Gone From Bad To Worse

By now, many are aware of Firewalk Studios' Concord, a multiplayer hero shooter with a Guardians of the Galaxy-esque cast and original sci-fi setting. Despite eight years in development, it was pulled from sale and servers taken down in less than two weeks after reportedly selling 25,000 copies.
It's a failure, for sure, and one of Sony's biggest in years, but that's not all. Reports indicate that director Ryan Ellis has stepped down, and the team is unsure of the studio's future. Maybe it could become a development partner for other PlayStation Studios projects, but fears of Firewalk Studios shutting down are reportedly circulating internally.

I currently don't play a multiplayer competitive/arena shooter and might have been interested in getting into one at the ground floor. I would have even paid $40 for it, I have a job... if it looked fun I might have been persuaded. However... I played the open beta weekend on PS5, and as soon as I saw the characters and propaganda pushing the normalization of all this ridiculous nonsense that's currently infesting the real world, I IMMEDIATLEY wrote it off. Keep this shit out of video games. Period.

I don't root for games to fail, or people to lose their job. But this game felt like a failure seconds after the showcase for it. It feels like a corporate type game where a bunch of execs saw how well Overwatch did years ago, and felt like they should do the exact same thing in a similar art style and wacky characters without taking the core formula and figuring out how to make it unique and fresh. What bothers me so much is the c-suite who likely pushed a lot of bad decisions and ideas here won't get fired. Yes, the director and people from the studio were arrogant as well, and it's why no one feels sorry for them. But for me, and I've seen this with many big companies, the c-suite are those who push for bad ideas and are the root cause for a lot of the failures and issues, and are rarely held accountable. In the rare instance when they are, they get a buyout package well in the 7-8 figures. Briefly looking beyond Concord, look at the current state of Playstation. Charging a PS5 Pro without a disk drive, and a cheap stand for $700 is stupid. Then they say they don't have enough IPs when fans flag their comments with tons of names they have left for dead that they owned. I put most of the recent failures at Playstation at the feet of the executive level. These self-proclaimed business geniuses have lost the plot and blame everyone below them to their fans without any accountability.

I rarely play those multiplayer games. The first thing that a game like Concord would have to do to be successful is to be attractive and to appeal to people like me who don`t care much about those competitive multiplayer shooters. If it had changed the mind of people like me and made us crave to buy this game then the story would have been totally different. But instead, the first thing that I did after seeing the gameplay for it and the design of the characters was to go back and continue playing my single player games. Even if it was free to play I wouldn`t even touch it. And next thing I knew Concord had flopped. Even some of the recent indie games that I have played and required much less budget to make were a lot more appealing in terms of gameplay and character design than the huge fail of a game that Concord was.

Honestly, it was also a game that was full of constant contradictions, especially because which is another contradition is Sony really wanted to push the story in its goddamn multiplayer game. So a great example of the contradiction is that all of the trailers and marketing show all the different hero characters as being part of like a guardians of the Galaxy type crew who are all working together and are familiar with each other. Gameplay is about these same heroes. All trying to shoot and kill each other. By comparison, every single OverWatch video showed the heroes all fighting each other, which is why when you do that in the game, it completely makes sense. Both narratively and gameplay. Think that was the problem with this game is it seems like each individual component in this game could have worked but for every good idea they had, they came up with another idea that they had that basically contradicts the previous good idea. Which is why everything just smells like everyone's cooking on the same floor.
