I'm 53. My grandad who lived in Edgeware once took me in his Mini Clubman to Heathrow for the scheduled departure of Concorde from the roof of the long stay carpark. The noise was amazing and those afterburners! You can imagine the impact that had on a 10 year old!

Lovely stuff Mark! Grandad's are always the best for these sorts of things haha ; ) I imagine that would indeed have been a very memorable experience! I can't say that I ever got that close to Concorde whilst she was flying, but she used to come over our house semi-regularly when I was young and I remember it vividly. Thanks for sharing and all the best! : )

What a delight to watch. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I have Concorde on MSFS and it's so enjoyable to fly. To think this was designed in the 60's without computers just shows what skill there was around then, amazing. Having worked at LHR for 15 years as well during Concorde's time I can honestly say it looked just as beautiful on the ground taxing as it did in the air. Fond memories. Thanks once again.

Thanks very much Marky, really glad you enjoyed it! : ) Concorde is indeed an engineering marvel by any standards, but to think she was designed and tested almost 60 years ago, is beyond impressive. I think that’s one of the many facets of her charm. I used to occasionally see Concorde passing over my house as a young kid, so I have some fond memories of the aircraft also. It seemed inconceivable back then, that one day she would no longer be flying. . . I’m glad you’re enjoying the DC Designs version of Concorde in MSFS. Happy flying and all the best!

Definitely the best Sim reviewer bar none! I must confess, I didn't catch on that this was X Plane, not MSFS until I saw the imputing of waypoints. That was the giveaway as that equipment has not made it to MSFS yet. A shame as this is my favourite feature with the multi function turn dial that not only displays waypoints, but also how far off track, time to next waypoint etc.
@IntotheBlueSimulations

Thank you very much indeed Incar, very kind of you to say (and hugely appreciated)! Haha, well I'm pleased you say that. I was obviously using a heavily modded version of X-Plane here, but I think the sim can be brought up to a broadly competitive standard with MSFS. It's a shame, the X-Plane content doesn't get nearly as much interest on my channel, but I think if people gave it a go, they would be pleasantly surprised. . . There are too many great aircraft in X-Plane, to be abandoning the sim altogether and whilst MSFS has been developing at a rate of knots, it is still lacking a high fidelity vintage jet like the 737-200 etc. As you say, having a proper INS is half the fun with these aircraft, something which the DC Designs version of Concorde sadly lacks. Cheers and all the best : )

I grew up in Woodley in the 70's and 80's, about a mile and a half from the Sandford Lane NDB that you talked about. Concorde would scream right over my house, and my schools (William Gray & then Bulmershe) at 11am every weekday, it was so damn loud that every lesson just had to stop for 5 minutes or so. I learned about the NDB when I joined the 1st Hurst Air Scouts. We used to go to Heathrow for the day just to watch it take-off; family trips, cub scouts (3rd Woodley) & air scouts. It was quite literally a daily part of my childhood. I'll wager nobody ever replies to these particular comments in relation to Fairwater Drive, Bulmershe, or 1st Hurst.

Thanks very much for the story Kernicterus! I grew up with Concorde passing overhead occasionally, but she was always well on her way at that point, certainly nowhere near as intimate as your experience with the aircraft by the sounds of it - amazing! A real shame Concorde is no longer gracing the skies and interrupting kids in the middle of class haha. Cheers and all the best! : )

The Concorde was a magnificent piece of machinery doomed by changing times and circumstances. Nowadays, cheaper; not faster is the name of the game. But Concorde is still a beauty; where it's magnificence in looks can only be matched by other aircraft. (The A350, 747, and 787 come to my mind) Thanks for the review man!!

Indeed RB; Concorde was a masterpiece of design and sadly, an icon of a different era. Efficiency certainly is the name of the game these days and whilst aircraft design has become rather more generic as a result, there are certainly still some beautiful aircraft out there. Awesome sim-video! Enjoyed it. I got to see (and touch) an SR-71 Blackbird in Arizona a few years back...it is one sleek machine! When I was working radar one night in the early 1990's (long range radar military surveilance...not ATC) I was goofing off in the radar shelter. Something caught my eye on the analog CRT scope. It didn't "look right". So, I managed to put a digital MCE tracker on it and it painted it's flight path. The computer calculated it was going 1,900 mph (ground speed) at about 68,000 ft. At that speed, the radar could only sweep-track it for maybe a minute or less...due to it's range limitations and aircraft's RCS and crazy speed. Dummy me decided to radio the watch sup. He said to come down and have a talk with him. As I walked down scratching my head what aircraft could do that, the SR-71 came into my head as I popped open the door. When I saw him, I asked, "SR-71?" He said, "yep, you didn't see that". But, my initial thought was an inbound missile or satellite coming down from space.

Cheers Chris, really glad you enjoyed the video! Haha, thanks for sharing the story - gave me a good chuckle. It's certainly not every day you see something hurtling through the air at those sorts of speeds, so I can't say I blame you for not twigging immediately XD The SR-71 might have Concorde beat on speed, but it's not quite as well suited for quaffing champagne ; ) Thanks again and all the best! : )

Another excellent vid - fascinating viewing! About 30 years ago I was working for a management consultancy at the CAA. The ATCO's were all really great people and would give us guided tours 'behind the scenes' - the best was being in Heathrow control tower at dusk, timed perfectly to watch Concorde take off, full chat, afterburner plumes, watching it from above - truly awesome! Also met Pete Finlay, Senior Concorde flight engineer.... he had some stories! And got a signed copy of his book too! Looking forward to Part 2!

What gets me is that the plane cruise climbed to 60,000 feet. That's the Armstrong line, where exposure to the atmosphere would make your blood boil. So you cannot lose cabin pressure, because they didn't hand out full pressure suits to each passenger. True trust in engineering and inspection.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, From what I've read, Concorde's certification re depressurisation, was based on the loss of one cabin window (hence the smaller than usual windows) and then a rapid descent down to a more reasonable altitude. So essentially factoring for a rapid decompression, but not an instantaneous one. I can't say I know all that much about how a loss of pressure will affect the body at those sorts of altitudes, but so far as hypoxia goes, the crew had positive-pressure breathing apparatus (the pax only had normal oxygen, but then they only need to be "kept alive" I suppose, as opposed to fully cognisant). It sounds like it's somewhat questionable whether or not the crew would actually have been able to get their mask on in time, given the case of a more or less instantaneous decompression, but they were of course trained for the scenario at any rate. Concorde was indeed an engineering marvel and certainly pushed the boundaries (on a multitude of fronts) of what was a civilian airliner was capable of! Cheers for your thoughts and all the best : )

My RAF Harrier bro had a 'job swap' with BA pilots, as BA liked to keep in with the RAF for a source of pilots. He was lucky enough to get a Concorde Captain. So, once airborne he was invited into the cockpit and took it up past Mach1. As there was a speed display in the cabin, going over Mach1 always raised a cheer. So he went to New York, stayed overnight and 'flew' it back the next day. As for the Concorde pilot, he was treated to a full-bore run in a Harrier as bro put it through its paces.

So, the level of detail and function is fantastic! But, is the rest of the sim/craft "fuselage" rendered? for example behind you are all the seats, galley, etc... rendered? Or is it non existent? It would be cool to be able to get up and walk back to the galley or visit the AI passengers... Nice work!

Hello again BN, The rest of the aircraft is indeed modelled, albeit to a much lower fidelity (you can see a shot of the cabin at the end of the video). I did plan to include some more cabin scenes in Part 2, but it looked so bad, it just wasn't worth bothering haha. The modelling and texturing is basic and there are no virtual passengers etc I'm afraid. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching and all the best : )

Hi Greg, Haha, that is indeed one of the first things most notice / comment on when seeing Concorde for the first time. I guess every inch of extra cabin width / height, means more airframe that has to be forced through the air at Mach 2. Still, Concorde was rather egalitarian; it might have been a bit cramped down the back, but it was even more so up the front ha! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Hi Gary, I was using real-world ATC recordings, which I then edited into the video. The ground crew voices were as a result of using "better pushback", a freeware plugin for X-Plane 11 (well worth downloading!). I hope that clarifies things a little. Whilst your request for outlining my setup in videos is a very reasonable one, I'm afraid I just don't have the time to provide such details on each video (setup can vary quite a bit from one video to the next). Hi Dabney, There is indeed an afterburner stage on Concorde's Olympus engines (one of only two commercial jets to be fitted with afterburners, so far as I am aware)! The afterburners were generally used for takeoff (unless the aircraft was at particularly light weights) and then subsequently to help push the aircraft through the sound barrier and up to Mach 1.7 (after which point, Concorde was capable of "super-cruise"). I hope that clarifies things a bit. All the best! : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Mach 1 is indeed in the order of 600kts at sea level, but the speed of sound is not a fixed number, rather it is relative to the medium through which the sound wave is passing. As the air is less dense at altitude, the speed of sound actually reduces as the aircraft climbs (you're looking at about 590kts at 30,000ft, vs around 660kts at sea level). I hope that helps a little? All the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations - it's at 38:48 (got the timestamp wrong the first time), where your mach dial shows 1.00, and the airspeed indicator in knots reads 391. I don't think air density alone can account for that, maybe the instruments gets inaccurate at speed approaching mach 1?

I notice that you got the outboard engines started as early as you could. I have read that the startup of engines 1 and 4 was usually left until the last minute because the Olympus engines are so thirsty. Concorde could, apparently, taxi quite happily on just the inboard engines. With starting the outboard engines early on, do you ever find yourself short on fuel when you get to JFK?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, I shall have to defer to your greater wisdom on that one haha. I tried my best to study up for the video, but I am far from an expert when it comes to Concorde. I have similarly read that the aircraft had an abundance of power on the ground and indeed that she was very thirsty (you can certainly see the fuel counter ticking down at quite a brisk pace, with all four engines running). When I mentioned getting the engines started as quickly as possible, what I really mean to say was; “getting the flight underway as quickly as possible” (for the reasons mentioned above). It hadn’t really occurred to me to start the engines down at the holding point and at any rate, I think it would have been a bit sub-optimal for the sake of the video. It would be interesting to know whether the above was still common practice with the aircraft going off 27L (with it being such a short taxi). This was in fact my first and only full outing in the Colimata Concorde. I certainly stuck a little bit of extra fuel on in appreciation of that fact and still ended up arriving a touch short. I think that mostly came down to my descent profile though, which ended up dragging the aircraft in a touch; but no doubt taxiing on just the two engines would have helped. Thanks for the pointer! All the best : )

At 43.00 in you mentioned the outside air temperature being -56 deg & not being sure it was accurate, as you had real world weather enabled. It was, as you were over 37,000ft and therefore in the stratosphere where the temp remains a constant -56 degrees regardless of the Flight Level :) Nice video!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Well I wonder whether or not it did actually happen to be ISA conditions on the day, or whether the sim just uses that above a certain altitude etc. I completely agree that -56 degrees would be correct according to ISA (and therefore correct if I had real-world weather turned off), but in reality conditions can of course vary from standard (so it seemed a bit coincidental that the temp was spot on). Concorde’s climb performance was apparently hugely degraded by temperatures above ISA, which is why I was interested to know at the time. I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks very much for watching and all the best : )
@theflyingfool
@theflyingfool 2 жыл бұрын
@@IntotheBlueSimulations doesn't really matter if you had real weather or not and ISA conditions do not apply in the stratosphere because above approx. 37000ft the stratospheric temperature is a constant -56 degrees Celsius for about 12 miles when it gradually gets warmer until you reach the mesosphere at 31 miles up.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
I'm with you Steve, but the real-world conditions can vary somewhat against the model. For example the troposphere height can vary quite a bit and the temperature can still deviate from ISA above this height. I found a nice example for you here (if you just scroll down a little). The aircraft is cruising at 40,000ft and as you can see the temperature is fairly close to ISA conditions, but there is still a minor deviation (and this can be more significant still in many circumstances): www.quora.com/What-is-the-temperature-outside-the-plane-at-40000-feet-height Cheers : )

I chose to run the flight from the pilot's viewpoint though, otherwise it means chopping and changing between stations a lot, which I felt broke the video up a bit too much. Concorde is indeed a fascinating and amazing machine! It's nice to be able to get at least some sense of it in the sim. All the best : )

You were cleared for takeoff on 9R, but departed 27L. Why? Is this a bug in the simulator?

Hi Leigh, It’s not a bug, simply that I was using real-world recordings from a Concorde flight, but flying a plan based on the current weather conditions at the time. The two didn’t quite match up, but it’s hard to come by those sorts of recordings, so I had to make do. I hope that clarifies things a bit. All the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Sounds like a "controller error" I'm sure they meant 27L. ;)

I didn't hear you say that you did a "walk around" inspection...?

Hi BN, Indeed I did not, but then, should I have done haha? I can't really exhaustively mention all of the processes that would have taken place ahead of time. . . To excuse myself a little at any rate; the walkaround would have been the flight engineer's job and I was running the video from the pilot's standpoint ; ) I hope that clarifies things. Cheers and all the best! : )
