Remember going to Gatwick airport for a holiday at the age of 13. I think we were going to Romania. I do remember waiting at the gate to board near the Windows when Concorde came to a stop at a nearby gate so that it's nose was facing the window where I stood, and then the nose moved. I don't remember much of the holiday clearly but I do recall thinking that that plane was one of the most beautiful things i had ever seen.

Back in the day, my colleagues were building the M11 motorway up to Cambridge. At the time Concorde had not yet arrived at Duxford. The other large aircraft were already there, I guess. My colleagues had instructions to hold on the (what is now) M11 going past Duxford because the clear approach, available length of runway, safety zones had to be maintained for Concorde's arrival. Concorde flew in and as soon as it had come to a stop the “machines” moved-in to build the M11.

I thought this was video was about "noise lowering!" LOL! I experienced Concorde in two ways: 1/ I watched as one did touch and goes at Prestwick. It was incredibly noisy! Even for its time. I was never closer than a mile or so from it. Still it was "I need ear protection here!" loud. 2/ I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. For years, we South Shore residents heard rather mysterious booms. Not loud, not obnoxious by any means, but certainly noticeable. It was quite some time before the general public got an explanation for these curious "thumps." It was Concorde inbound to New York City.

They even wanted to pull the plug on Concorde until they realised it would cost millions to cancel!

No it wasn't, it was a ground-breaking aircraft design that would have had no match in the skies if the project hadn't been shafted by Harold Wilson's government - the government that allowed itself to be harassed by the U.S's bully boy tactics . The cancellation of the TSR2, the scrapping of the remaining airframes, and the criminal destruction of all the tooling that built it, sounded the death-knell of the British aircraft industry. There is a B-727 on display in the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry that can still raise and lower its landing gear and move its flight controls. The interesting thing is that all the hydraulic systems have been modified so they work on compressed air instead of hydraulic fluid. This was done to prevent leaks from dripping fluid onto the floor of the museum. Perhaps this Concorde has been modified the same way.

Interesting thought?

Watching its operation with the delay between the screen and nose moving down gave me that impression. @@arcadia449 Bullshit. Without it a birdstrike would "blind" at least half the "pilots" and could take our both "windscreens. The British Concordes were not compliant with FAA/EASA regulations for cockpit "glass" and the nose was a drag-adding clusterfuck attempt to "reduce drag" by adding surface area. It also "droops" to make the aircraft "fit" existing jetways/parking spots because the idiots tried to "save weight" by reducing "cabin doors" and ended up moving the "front" and "main" door so far back that the nose would hit the terminal building before the aircraft was close enough for the jetway. You can't see a damned thing with that shit "dropped" and the pilots' asses still in their seats you can't see with the them up. And who in the fuck flies or taxis looking "straight down" in front of the plane. The "droop snoot" also prevent tuga from "pushing back" on the NLG which is flimsy, lightweight shit on the British Concordes.
@jordanrodrigues82655 жыл бұрын
Fixed-wing aircraft use a much slower speed for takeoff and landing than they do for cruising. At slower speed the nose needs to be held higher. Concorde's supersonic delta wings needed a *lot* of angle (almost 15 degrees) to land at a reasonably slow speed. Actually, it wasn't exactly "reasonable" - the typical landing speed of 160 knots or more is faster than the "never exceed" speed of many small commercial aircraft. So it wasn't possible to see ahead while approaching a runway or descending at low speed. This is really bad in civilian aviation because "look where you're going" is a safety rule which pilots are expected to follow. Military aviation has different procedures for landing and often use different equipment - both on the aircraft and the ground - but to some extent supersonic military aircraft just live with the risks.

Surprisingly small plane, really.Would have been nice to get a view from the cockpit when the nose was down, like the one you had with the nose up, if they had let you.
@arcadia4496 жыл бұрын
I did go inside the cockpit but I couldn't be in two places at once...lol. The cockpit is amazing!

The Conncorde, The Vulcan and the Lightning.....3 of the best aircraft in the world. Only one plane could catch Concorde....the lightning.....only one plane had the same engines as Concorde...the mighty Vulcan.

I remember Lightnings flying when I was a kid, Great aircraft.
@mikecorleone67976 жыл бұрын
The plane is probably still flight ready if it’s kept in this good condition
@arcadia4496 жыл бұрын
Most of the planes here have had their engines removed for spare parts for aircraft the were still in service. During the Falklands War they had to scavenge parts from Vulcan Bombers in museums, etc., for the Vulcan raid on Port Stanley.
@mikecorleone67976 жыл бұрын
Well at least they got the most out of them.. here in the states it’s the same thing for b29 bombers and p51 mustangs n whatnot. Here in san diego they are building huge radial engines out of scavenged parts for an old dc3 they are restoring..

Yes it does.
@Darnokk155 жыл бұрын
What is this for, really? Does this give some aerodynamic advantage? I can't imagine it's just for visibility. I'd think that visibility with the nose up is enough for taxiing, departing or landing?
@arcadia4495 жыл бұрын
Yes, the nose drooping is so that the pilots can see the runway on take-off and landing.
@parjacpar30776 жыл бұрын
I've been on this concorde at Duxford and its nothing like it was when i went on board It was outside and all the seats were there and no hand rails plus only one way on and off it No signs or anything preventing you from sitting on passenger seats It was qutie a few years a go that I went on it

The droop snoop
@Wildstar405 жыл бұрын
Seems to takes forever to get the nose down and up again. Pilots must have hated that unnecessary delay.
@arcadia4495 жыл бұрын
It worked faster when it was powered by the aircraft's own onboard systems. As the plane took off it remain parallel with the runway.
@jacksonlam28776 жыл бұрын
So the engine is removed.....sad @2:15
@arcadia4496 жыл бұрын
It seems many of these aircraft in the museum have had their engines removed. I'm guessing it was to provide spare parts for still-operational aircraft?
@jacksonlam28776 жыл бұрын
... I really doubt if there is any operational concorde.
@arcadia4496 жыл бұрын
Not just the Concorde. Every type of aircraft here has had its engines removed.
@jill93566 жыл бұрын
Would you want to risk some one stealing a potentially still operational plane?
@mrme24836 жыл бұрын
They arnt all removed, but alot are, some are probably for weight reasons, (some aircraft are hanging) although others have their engines next to them on display, like the sr71 in the american section.

The Concorde kinda looks sad when the nose is down or is it just me?
@lordclancharlie13256 жыл бұрын
I can understand the second windshield but why lowering the nose ? And still, why a second windshield ?!
@arcadia4496 жыл бұрын
They have to lower the nose so that the pilots can see the runway when landing or take-off. The second windshield is to protect the main one during supersonic flight.

I hope they will bring it back one time... I miss that plane, so wonderful. :)

Yes I agree. I feel as if we've gone backwards?
@martynadanilczyk56846 жыл бұрын
+David Stuckey (Explorer) Exactly. Aviation took a step back by grounding concorde. Not long ago we could travel with the speed of sound. And now? Boeing, airbus? They do not equal to concorde.

Used for spare parts in operational Concordes.
