I`ve travelled on the Ben in a severe gale 9, and believe me it wasn`t pleasant. We had a cabin, but all topside accommodation is high on the vessel and she rolls like a pig in heavy seas. You couldn't stand up, let alone walk. Even the dogs felt seasick! I`ve been on a few rough passages across the English channel, but the Irish sea in December, never again!!

Richard Jacob ah gale 9 is only a breeze, I find it rather relaxing. But then again, I live on the Isle, so I’m pretty used to the weather you’d describe as severe 🤣

I have been on the old Ben in a force 9 westerly from Liverpool. 5 Hours being thrown around like that - wonderful!! My car was out on the ramp and arrived covered in salt and heavy fuel oil smoke. The don't build them like that any more. let alone Lady of Mann I

Beautifully captured - the speeded-up parts give you a different perspective of her handling. Not a big fan of the Ben or Heysham but since losing the Lady of Mann, it's all I've got. I refuse to sail on a fastcraft - 2.5 hours at sea just isn't enough!!

She seemed to have a slight list to starboard. At 1st I thought it as due to her heeling, then maybe the wind but as she entered more sheltered water and docked she still had the slight list.

@Walt Leece I used to have a cabin cruiser moored opposite where the I.O.M. ferry ships docked.in Fleetwood. I used that boat frequently through the '70s and up to around the mid 80s, so I reckon if Ben wasn't around in the 70s it must have been built in the early 80s. When the Ben departed she would about turn around to face seaward (it was a tight manoeuvre for her) and head out to sea on route for the I.O.M. (One of the commenters says he worked on the Ben in 1971).

Very good video! Where were you filming from on that one? This morning would have been great day for it - sun rise Manannan and Ben coming in at roughly same time and theres a cruise ship on way up to Douglas too. I should have jumped in the car and got down there doh! Watched on webcams though.

You have to ask yourself should a competent captain even be sailing in these conditions. Yes the ship can handle the conditions but you are primarily a car/truck and passenger ferry and risking those and the damage such action can do to the car deck. It’s not like Gale force winds are unexpected in the 21st century. delaying departure should always be the first choice.

Great footage! What a weather this is. Tough one! Is it possible for me to use and upload this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, inland barge ships, navy, etc. Of course full credit and a link to your KZbin page will be given when I upload. If you want to talk this through via e-mail, that's also possible. My email is on my youtube page. I'm looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Thanks!

Ships architects of yesteryear must be turning in their graves. It wouldn’t last 5 minutes in an Atlantic storm. I remember when the Steam packet had real ships, not like this floating fair ground ride. Just look at it wallow and bounce😁.
@AgentRafa
@AgentRafa 4 жыл бұрын
What? Naval architects of yesterday (before the mid 90's) didn't even believe that waves could be bigger than 10 meters (32 feet or whatever), they thought really big waves(20 m) only occur every 1000 years so they designed their ships there after. The 90's woke up the industry after rogue waves hit an oil rig in the North sea, they had instruments for wave measuring and they recorded 20+ m waves. Ship captains and sailors have been talking about huge waves 2 and 3 times bigger than what they thought was possible for a hundred years but they were dismissed as "sailors fairytales". Now they started researching, using modern technology, satellites monitoring the world oceans and they were shocked when they discovered that 20+m waves occur every day. It changed the game completely, and the naval architects had to take much bigger waves into account. With all due respect I think you're talking out of your arse, ships designed and built after late 90's/early 2000's are built/designed to a higher standard than the ships before that time. Search for "rogue waves" here on YT and you'll find excellent documentaries on the subject explaining what I have just said. Have a nice day landlubber:-))))
@davidgriffiths7696
@davidgriffiths7696 4 жыл бұрын
etikkboksen no that speech about rogue wave is almost irrelevant, I checked out the subject years ago which is about ocean waves anyway, not a small stretch of water like the Irish Sea. Modern ships are often built with a higher centre of gravity, hence more unstable, like the one in the film which I had the amusing experience of turning into Douglas bay on. I have a boat, and have often been out on the Atlantic in small craft. We have proper waves there. Sorry to ruin your little speech😆
@AgentRafa
@AgentRafa 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidgriffiths7696 Cool, we can almost have a live debate here, that's rare on YT. Thank you for replying so fast. How is rogue waves "almost irrelevant" my friend? Take a look at the old school supply vessels from the 80's and compare them to their modern day sisters. The bow is much bigger because they must resist and deal with much bigger waves than they thought was possible in the 80's. It demands better stability and a stronger hull. Center of gravity: yes ships are taller now, with huge superstructures but that doesn't mean the center of gravity rises, because they compensate that with adding ballast. Modern ships are better and stronger than old school ships, and that's a fact.
@davidgriffiths7696
@davidgriffiths7696 3 жыл бұрын
@Walt Leece those old ships would never roll over if something went wrong. The wooden planking, the coils of hemp rope on the green painted decks where I would occasionally take a nap in the sun and wind in the rounded stern, the bench seating and canteen at the front, the old weather tarpaulins, the sturdy black stanchions, the awesome sight of green water washing up against the thick glass rectangle windows opposite down the steeply sloping deck when backing into the harbour, the crash of plates smashing, butter and toast and a cup of tea, the crash and shudder of the hull, the blast of wind and spray through the car decks at the back, the roar of the open boat generators under the stairs, ah those days are gone, but not forgotten, the glory days of the Isle Of Man Steam Packet Company! That’s when ships were ships, voyaging manfully on the high seas!
