Great review! My son loaned me his ‘86 944 NA with me when he joined the military. I have a choice of commuting in his 944 or my 993. I generally take the 944! It’s super comfortable, smells like a classic 1980s European car, and with over 200k miles on it, I don’t have to worry about it getting de-valued. Lol

I used to have a 944 of the same year, and with the same interior. I loved that car. It was so easy to deal with -- much like a well broken-in pair of loafers that the car mags of the time used to described it. You could just slip in and go. Watching the video, I could suddenly remember the slightly moldy smell of the interior. I remember that at an idle, it sounded far more muscular than it did higher in the rev range. Up in the rev range it sounded pretty much like a Golf. The only reason that I sold it was because I had the opportunity to buy a long-hood 911 for cheap, and at the time I really couldn't deal with two Porsches. When given the chance, I'd always grab the 911. But if you'd like to get into Porsches, and you see a deal on one -- buy it! It's an excellent place to start.

Great video! We have had an 87 NA and now have an 87 Turbo, the 944 series is one of my favorite-shifting Porsches and they really make great cars for cruising or road trips. The NAs also have a very distinctive sound from the inside when driving, which I really love. And for sure the Alpine white and burgundy look nice together, you're driving almost a unicorn of a car in terms of condition and care.

Beautiful car Ken! Nice to see the 944 getting some love. I’ve owned 5 different 944 s2’s over the years as they are fun, reliable, comfortable and very well engineered. I currently have a glacier blue metallic 1990 Cabriolet with marine blue interior; one of my favourite features is the sport seats. They are a great value; get one while you can!

Pretty concise review of a GREAT car from Porsche. My own love affair with these began in '82 when reading Car and Driver, AutoWeek, and Road & Track where these got very high remarks before the World caught on to how good they are. Got on the list immediately and nearly 1.5 years later mine came into the delivery bay. We all were on 'wait lists' and paying usually 750-1500 over MSRP. Mine was delivered on July 10, 1984 as a Weissach prepped and tuned, Sport Suspension M456, with LSD, FUCHS, Guards Red, Grey-Beige leather interior. It had 29 miles signed off by a test driver at Weissach as it was sorted after prepping. I still own it and have added many more to the grouping: from an early '82 built, Recaro Sport Seat model (one of the first into America) to an '89 turbo which was one of the last. I have concentrated on special option group models with lower mileage and 5 speed transaxles, usually one owner, and have an '86 in the same color combo as the Alpine White car shown here. That car is also a Concours unit owned first in Utah then Montana. It has Sport Seats in leather and color matched FUCHS in a rarely optioned package called a 'Sport Touring Edition' carrying a unique code and a high monroney sticker of $30,000 in '86. It came to me with 29,000 original miles around 10 years ago. Thanks for the really GREAT review and an opportunity for me to share in the joy of ownership with you and the owner of this sweetheart ~

I subscribed, liked, and commented haha Only thing maybe said wrong would be the “I’d give it a 7 or an 8 so we’ll give it a 6.5…. ??? I have an 88 base and it’s a blast to drive. How solid the car feels and just predictable. Repairs aren’t horrible to do, not much for computers back then. Some things over engineered, looking at you sunroof. I’ve also owned a 88 rx7, 88 fiero gt and a 90 Celica alltrac and it’s fun knowing and feeling the differences on cars of the era. Big Porsche fan. Am a PCA member. Thanks for the videos!!

@PorscheClubofAmerica 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great car! There are some differences between your 1983 model and this 1987. Primarily, yours should have manual steering (unless the original buyer checked the rare option for power steering) and the dashboard is different.
@danf321
@danf321 2 жыл бұрын
@@PorscheClubofAmerica Yes, manual steering. It’s a bit tedious driving it in the city where most people want to run me down, but it’s fun, and an adventure every time I drive it. Before I drove it home 180 miles from my father-in-law’s house, I had a local Porsche service shop in San Luis Obispo do a complete service, with all the important stuff (timing and balance belt, water pump, seals, brakes, etc.) Now I need to find a Porsche mechanic in or near Burbank when I need it serviced.

Nice review... Its easy to see why these cars were so popular back in the day... one thing you didn't cover is the revised dash starting with the 85.5 version, if I recall correctly. It would be great if you could test drive an example with the earlier dash to see how you think they compare...

I owned an 84 Euro spec 944 for a short time. Definitely a fun car and did feel like a bank vault as you described. I just wished it had more power. It was fun on a curvy backroad to a point. I probably would have enjoyed a later S model a lot more. It is a great car to get into the Porsche experience with on a small budget if you can find one that has been well cared for.

Hmm, nice comments. I have daily driven my 87 944 for over 30 years. I believe that for practicality and storage it would rate a 10 for road trips. Outside of a Cayenne or maybe Macan, there isn’t really anything else that compares for comfort and practicality. For car shows, I’d say that’s a solid score, maybe a bit higher for some of the lesser selected hues from their color palette. Daily driving works fine even in winter with a second set of rims and dedicated snow tires
@PorscheClubofAmerica
@PorscheClubofAmerica 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments! It will be extremely tough for any OMR to get a 10 in a category, and we think the newer four-doors edge out the 944 in terms of daily drivability. The 944 is surprisingly comfortable for a sports car, however.
@jeffhammond8969
@jeffhammond8969 2 жыл бұрын
@@PorscheClubofAmerica sure, that makes sense. As a counterpoint, the 944 as you stated is a sports car, and viewed through that lens is unique and amazing in the history of cars that they have produced. It also has the advantage of still being more affordable than most any modern car with equivalent practicality.

I've had two base 944's, one an 85.5 and the other a 1987. The 85.5 was by far better in my opinion than the 87 but it could have been how they were handled prior to me owning them. I did a cross country drive in the 87 and there were some issues, small but annoying. The 85.5 I drove about 50k miles over 7 years and loved every minute of it. It had Fuchs wheels and lower profile tires, the 87 had the phone dials and larger tires which just didn't give the same performance. Overall the 85.5 had a better engine, needed less maintenance and was an excellent car, wish I had kept that one. The 87 was problematic and could have been a money pit so I am glad I got rid of it. It ended up going to someone in NJ who was going to turn it into a track car. I now own a 2016 Boxster Black Edition which is a great car!

Similar situation. I owned an early 1985 and a 1987 944S. The 1985 had lots of issues and my 1987 was trouble free. I have a 1992 968 currently, great car!

North American ride heights are so staid. My stock ride height 2001 996 C2 Coupe runs on 17" wheels and it looks like the long lost cousin of this 944. Lovely car, despite that odd color, which would not have been my choice. Purely subjective of course I just don't like white for cars... Good short review! I really like 944s. And those lovely wheels, I've seen them on 928s but not 944s so thats cool. The stock anti-sway bars could be cheaply upgraded for a dramatic improvement in cornering.
