Bill I've been watching your videos for years and finally your reviewed my long lost love. The 944. I owned a 1986 Triple black one that was owned by a doctor up here in Boston. To give a testimony of just how great this car was I drove from Montreal to Boston on a Tuesday night in August because of a family emergency. I left at 10:00 pm stopped at the border to call my brother ( 1989 before cell phones), talked for 20 minutes, stopped for ten minutes to get gas in Concord NH and pulled into Children's Hospital in Boston at 3:15 am. Needless to say my daughter was OK because of a great 1st year resident that knew what he was doing. This was and is without question the best car I have have ever owned.( TR6, 240Z, 280Z, Jeep GC Overland Hemi, and GMC Yukon Denali, etc) I am 64 years old and believe me when I tell you that car was fast, fast, fast. Check google and time out that trip you'll be saying WOW all day long!

Interesting about the turbo being unreliable, mine has been incredibly reliable, still going strong with approaching 1/4 of a million miles. The maintenance isn’t cheap but I find it the same as with anything if you look after it, it’ll look after you.

I have been looking for a car to set as my goal to achieve within the next 6years and I realized that all the cars I see are fast and expensive and that is what makes them so cool but that is all. Simply looking at them is nice as in “nice car it looks fast and expensive” but that is all. So I moved to the classics and after a short time I found the 944 and instantly got that wow feeling. It’s not the speed or the price but the simple joy I get every time I see it. The 944 doesn’t give me that “how fast is it” or “oh how expensive” it makes me want to get in and just drive no mods no top speed runs none of it just drive nice and smooth no music just feel the car. I don’t know why I have never seen one in person but just from pictures and videos I am in love with this car. I hope I can get one some day🙏🏼

Well said sir. I live in Commiefornia and have to deal with the "dinged-up" altima piece of ...drivers tailgating to the point where I keep my driving to a minimum. I have to drive to and from work, but during the week I prefer to stay in. Even though I drive a daily driver Hyundai, I still care for it and keep a good distance from the vehicle in front of me. Unfortunately we're all at the mercy of the knuckleheads driving behind us. Whenever I there is a driver behind me that keeps a good distance, my road anxiety decreases drastically. Sadly this rarely happens. Society really needs to push worldwide slogans of "Do Not Tailgate!", and raise the age of someone being able to apply for a driver's license. Kids tend to drive like sh*t. My fun car is a pristine Milano Red Acura RSX Type S with very low mileage. It only has 30K miles and is basically a garage queen, again due to Commiefornia having overpopulated roads and tailgaters. Not having it. Anyway, regarding the 944. I would have bought one of these a long time ago if it wasn't for the rear styling. I love the looks of the front and side profiles of the Porsche 944, but the rear styling, to me, is ugly. I could never get passed that flaw.
@fredbobberts57534 жыл бұрын
Having owned a turbo and now two s types yes the turbos are less reliable. The amount of heat under the hood on a turbo especially in the southwest is incredible on a turbo and it just chews up alternators in particular. The one thing on an s you have to be aware of is the gear set on the cams but otherwise it’s an na 944. It’s also higher compression so you have a little more punch off cam than an 8v or a turbo down low. What you look for is no sound coming from the gears at startup and a very smooth transition on cam at about 4100 rpm. If you have this the car really is not that far off the stock turbo. Of course you can overboost a turbo and make it really fast. The side bump strips are actually on option (one of my cars had them, the other doesn’t and they look better in darker colors). 944 S often have 928s2 sewer lid wheels, the seven slots, and usually these are in platinum finish. It’s a nifty little car to thrash about in, geared a little tall for the track but great for the highway. The timing belts balance shaft belts balance shaft seals front main and water pump are all items to look at every 45k miles not sixty k and at 3-4 years it’s probably going to need that work. Smart not to punch it until it’s warm.

The Porsche 944 was the best Porsche built EVER. And I completely disagree about the turbo, the 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S, and the 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo, are the best of all 944's, incredible reliability. However, every 944 has great potential, including the naturally aspirated.

February 1st 2018 I was in the left lane going over the speed limit by about 10mph trying to get into the jam packed right lane,,,, well this jerk was about 8 feet from my rear bumper so I decided to teach him a lesson and not touching the brake pedal and slowly letting up on the gas pedal until he got the message and backed off about 60 feet. Once I got over to the exit lane he was giving me the middle finger, and I gave him one in return. I left out a few words I would have loved to have used.

You obviously know enough to understand that if this WAS a turbo, it would not be unreliable at all - if it's true that the owner kept up all the porsche-recommended maintenance. It WILL be less to do in the future though, on this one, to keep it in shape.

i drove a 944turbo for 4 years. You're right it was 4000/yr to keep running. All the balancers and tensioners and water pump and alternator and cam shafts on one stupid rubber serpentine belt. horrible design. this one is no better - sorry. fun car to drive tho. legendary handling and on the highway the turbo was just a blast. you could quickly pass anything and feel the paint stripes when you did it. i guess the engineers figured the little 4 pot needed to have a minimum of inertia to spin up so they designed it with a belt rather than a chain and then threw in some high performance valve geometry that just invaded the cylinder heads in an aggressive way so that if that belt ever snapped you could just scrap all the hard parts. lots of fun!
