Hi Mat, I'm a structural engineer at Brazil. It's great to see this kind of videos even though the Design doesn't follow the same parameters as the Brazilian designing "rules". I wonder what would be the difference between the two types keeping the same load, stress & displacement. Let me know if you want to make this comparison. See ya

Nice spreedsheet Mat. I have read Jack Mohele book and there is a picture with a building destroyed after an earthquake where the specialmoment frame in the perimeter are ok, but all the secondary columns are destroyed. So, it is indeed a very important topic to consider. However, I have always have doubs about this and you may help me, with your practice in California, to clarify them. Imagine you have a low rise building and you decide to do the lateral resistent system with shear walls. Normally I reduce the stiffness of the secondary members in the model to absorb the entire energy of the earthquake with the walls. However, to resiste the gravity loads I provide this secondary columns, and seconday beams. At the end I have secondary frames. Let imagine 3 spans with 5m beams. So my question are: - Is there a minimum for the size of the column? In a special moment frame I consider 300mm and also I check if the anchor lenght for the rebar is enough. But for secondary columns.. is it posible to do to 200mm for example? How do you normally consider this in practice? - Let say that your beam is 5m like i mentioned. Is it appropiate to do the beam continuos or should you design them pinned? Because if you provide top reinforcement it may transfer moment to the column I think. And if you design it pinned, is there a typical way to detail that connection to the column? Keep doing this great videos!! Best regards, Agustin
@MatPicardal
@MatPicardal 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Agustin, in the US, column sizes are usually governed by Architectural layout and constructibility, and we usually try to push for a minimum of 14 inch column size, but sometimes we go as low as 12 inches. For example - constructibility - contractors in the U.S. prefer to use the same size formwork throughout the project, it's more economical from a construction perspective for the structural engineer to keep re-using the same sizes. So, if we have an 18 inch thick shear wall, we will try to size the columns as 18"x18", even though they may only need to be 16"x16". This helps overall constructability and helps the construction schedule (saves overall project costs). This depends on the contractor and project, but it's common for the projects I've worked on. For detailing, if we want to detail a column to slab connection as fixed, we will fully develop the column longitudinal steel into the slab. For example, if the longitudial reinf were #8 bars, we would use #8 hooked dowels fully developed into the slab. For pinned, we may just use smaller #5 dowel bars for the column/slab connection.

In normal special moment frame columns you are able to not the fulfill spacing of s0 outside of the expected plastic hinge location. In this gravity columns you have to fulfill s0 in the whole span of the column? So in general your transverse reinforcement will be higher in the gravity columns than in normal columns?

Good video Mat. Can you please elaborate the way you do the lap splices in the column. Im not familiar with the type of structural drawing shown in the video but I think i saw that the splices were place at the bottom of the column (just above the floor slabs), and according to the ACI they should be locate in the middle of the member.
@MatPicardal
@MatPicardal 4 жыл бұрын
I believe that's true for special moment frames (lateral force resisting) but I think theres an exception somewhere for gravity columns where it doesn't matter where its spliced
@legrak92
@legrak92 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mat, so I waned to know your input when it comes to multi ties, I work as a rebar detailer in California, and I found many times that the placer prefer the use of them as they only need to place one piece instead of multiple pieces, increasing their productivity, while it's also good for the rebar shop productivity, it does increase a bit the quantities of rebar. but it also reduce the number of Standard hooks to only two 135D. For some reason, sometimes in Special Moment Frames, I haven't got it approved. Thanks for the videos and keep the good work :)
@MatPicardal
@MatPicardal 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Erick, I've heard those referred to as serpentine ties before, where it's one continually bent hoop. From my experience those are generally approved for gravity columns. But for special moment frames, I'm not sure as I haven't worked on one. Concretr SMF are not often used, at least in my experience.

Hi Mat, I’m from Ecuador. We based our analysis and design in American codes. Do you use a single model to analyze the gravity and seismic system in ETABS? If not, some tips would be useful about using separated analysis. In my country, one single model is generally used which includes all structural elements. RC SMF is the most common system.
@MatPicardal
@MatPicardal 4 жыл бұрын
It's different from firm to firm and may even differ from project to project. I like to separate the gravity/lateral models for the projects I work on, especially if the buildings are complicated. Combining lateral/gravity into a single model is great if you can get the model working, but sometimes it takes forever to just get the model to work because of complex geometries and meshing, you can end up chasing miscellaneous errors (and wasting firm money) instead of actually engineering. Again, depends on the firm, project complexity, and even software.

When I find Mpr in the PM interaction diagram (using factored axial force Pu), I do use the unreduced curve in the PM interaction diagram. It's mentioned in the exhibit and video as well. This way, it will maximize the Mpr (if you use the reduced curve, your Mpr will be less - unconservative).

Sir , is there any innovation that can be done in civil engineering industry . I feel that all these existing roles are like routine works like site engineer checks quality , measurements . Where as structural and transportation engineer has a code book for Everything.

Hi Matt. You could try doing on of these for ACI Appendix D (Anchorage to concrete).

Hey Mat, at 10:19 you said both hooks have to be 135 degree ones(which makes sense) but I doubt its practicality, workers on site r gonna have hard time placing such hooks.

True, thats why contractors sometimes request to use "serpentine" hoops where they use a bending machine to create multiple bends in a single continuous bar to make a single hoop for easier installation. These are typically approved by engineers for gravity columns, at least in the west coast of the US.

I've punched in my personal email and never received the download. This looks very useful, any chance I can get some help with this?
